What happened when you tried the grub ideas other people suggested?  If
you can't even boot into single user mode you have major problems, which
you'd probably need to diagnose with a rescue CD (the CentOS installer
DVD doubles as rescue media).  If you can at least get somewhere with
runlevel 1 (or S), and with leaving out rhgb and quiet from the kernel
parameters, you might see an interesting message on the console that
would point in the right direction.

The reason I suggest these steps is that "system halts" is not a very
helpful problem description.  The more specific information you can
provide the more likely you are to get useful advice.  The steps above
can help you provide more specific information.
