I remember having that happen a few times back in CentOS 4.x days, where 
eth0 would silently become eth1 after a kernel update and ifcfg-eth0 
would break hard.  It's gotten a lot better than it was, and I've had 
very few problems in my use cases with NM. YMMV, of course.
