I think this should be i2c-tools, not i2-tools.
$ yum install freeipimi
$ insmod i2c-dev
$ i2cdetect –l

I'm going to hazard a guess that MAILBOX I2C support isn't in the mainline 4.4.x branch. Has it been pushed upstream?
