x windows and i810 chipset

here is part of my x file. It will not do the 1920x1080 mode. It says it is not defined. Dear all, It seems that wget version has had the -C (cache) option removed when it went from 1.9 to version 1.10, this happened somewhere between Centos 3.5 and 4.2. Does anyone know why the -C option was removed and how I can get it back? Other than regressing wget..... Regards Pete

PostgreSQL 8.1 on CentOS4

I have discovered that the default init script distributed with pgsql v8.1 sets the listening port to 5432 but does not enable tcp/ip connections. One must add the -i switch to the invocation line in the script. I am not sure if this is an oversight or whether there is another way to tell postmaster to start with tcp/ip listening enabled that I am unaware of. However, I thought that this information might be of interest to anyone else running a non-distro version of pgsql. I have an i810 chipset and am trying to set a custom mode. X is not taking that mode. Has anyone else run into this situation? How do I get X to take the mode on an i810 driver. Jerry

How to properly install VLC?

Hi all, My colleagues and friends from time to time send me .wmv files and I'd like to be able to view them under CentOS. VLC was recommended to me, and AFAIR about a half year ago I tried installing it. I don't remember the exact details, but I do remember that the Red Hat and Fedora binary distributions didn't work without giving all sorts of errors. I _think_ I then did a source compilation, and managed to get VLC at least to start up from the command line. However... It is still a brute text interface only, and when I try to add a wmv file to the playlist it gives me all sorts of errors and nagging about 'file format probably not supported' etc. :( I just tried to install the Red Hat binary distribution again from FireFox (from: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/), and I didn't see it complain about anything, but still it doesn't work any differently from the above. :((( Does anyone know how to go about this (I don't mind doing a source compilation, just as long as I now which version to grab and how to get it properly installed)? Beware - Yum 3.5 to 3.6 upgrade replaces named.conf

You get so used to yum upgrades going so smoothly but I learned the hard way to always make a thorough inspection after a yum update. I let yum go ahead and upgrade from 3.5 to 3.6. Afterwards I made some basic queries to httpd, postfix and bind named (probably a cached query). I even checked the /var/named/ directory and saw all my hosts files. So looked like another smooth ride, well until today I noticed my domains dropped off the net. Too bad I did not check the bind gui or look at /etc/named.conf after the yum update since it was replaced with a generic version from 3.6. Luckily I copied /etc/named.conf-rpmsave to named.conf and I am back in business, well at least in 24 to 72 hours for the rest of the world :( __________________________________ Yahoo! memoir and latex

I installed Centos 4.2 last night, I moved from Fedora Core 4 to it as I wanted to get off the distro upgrade treadmill, so I'm still learning about centos. I've been trying to add the memoir package to be used with latex but I can't find the exact right place for it. Can anyone who's installed it or knows about latex tell me please? Connecting via ssh i don't see accent characters

Hi. When I connect via ssh I don't see the accent characters for example when I execute setup config utility, but locally I see the accent characters. Note: It's a CentOS 4.2 configured for spanish. Iago

It lets you setup a basic CentOS 4 system along with the server components. Anything else that is needed can then be installed via yum or up2date once the system is running. The resulting installed system is identical to a normal CentOS 4 install ( with yum and up2date ). One important thing to keep in mind - this installer uses the stock i686 kernel - therefore i586 machines are not supported ( including MiniITX, ViaC3's, AMD K6' etc ). If you need to install on such machines, you will need to get the full distro. Download it from the /centos/4/isos/i386/ directory on your local mirror or pickup the torrent.
