passwordless ssh

Hi, I am just migrating to Centos from fedora core 3. I have 3 boxes involved here: Box A --Fedora 3 (doing the dns, http, sendmail serving duties) Box B --CentOS Box C --CentOS I used to run root passwordless ssh both ways from boxes A and B mainly set up to keep the 2 boxes in sync w/rsync ... these 2 boxes normally ran one being the slave and the other being the master...the master did all the serving duties...if something happened where the master couldn't do it anymore, then the slave becomes master. I have tried and tried the following #ssh-keygen -t dsa (and rsa using authorized_keys(2) or both depending...) when it asks for passphrase...just enter and enter # scp /root/.ssh/id_dsa.pub boxA:/root/.ssh/ # ssh boxB #<password> boxbshell # cat /root/.ssh/id_dsa.pub >>/root/.ssh/authorized_key or key2 or both. # exit boxashell # ssh boxb <password> will NOT let me do passwordless now then I have gotten it to work by using the following /root/.ssh/.config : Host remotehost User remoteuser Compression yes Protocol 2 RSAAuthentication yes StrictHostKeyChecking no ForwardAgent yes ForwardX11 yes IdentityFile /home/localuser/.ssh/id_remotehost_dsa taken from: http://www.davz.net/static/howto/sshkeys I can get it to work from 2 boxes both ways...but when I set up the 3rd box, it works but one of the other boxes that was good does not do it anymore. I go back edit the authorized_key files.... check the other boxes make sure they still work set up the faulty box again...get it working then one of the other good boxes doesn't work I then start looking into the .config file...has some pretty dangerous things in it that I really don't care for but that's where I am right now. does anyone know of anything specific that Centos is doing here? or what can be my problem? BTW I am NOT using selinux only as a warn thx John Rose -- ...and I woke up 2 days later in the back yard talking to Elvis!

X stopped working after compiling new kernel

Hi again, After quite a few stability problems with CentOS 4 and my laptop I have decided to go back to Centos 3. I installed it and got everything working alright, apart from the wireless network card. I need to use ndiswrapper and so require a newer kernel (2.4.26 at least), so I downloaded the kernel source 2.4.30, copied the right configuration (config-i686), made oldconfig and installed the kernel. Everything boots alright but X complaints about invalid checksum in the video bios. Searching for this error message it mentions that I should enable agpgart and support for my card (i852 or so) in the kernel, but it is already supported (I have tried it as a module and compiled right in). Anyone got any suggestions on how to get X working again? Do I need to get any extra RHEL patches before I can compile the code? Any help will be greatly appreciated. New to CentOS, is this a safe bet?

I know this may be a stupid place to ask, but I have to ask. I'm looking for a new Linux distro to use and support. I've been a loyal purchaser of SuSE Linux Pro for the last 3 years. I've paid my $90 loyally, in part because I wanted money to actually go to someone working on OSS, but also because I thought it was a good bargain, to get a quality, tested distro for that cost. The problem is that lately SuSE is sliding down the path towards being considered Fedora-like by Novell. So when I install SuSE I don't know if I'm going to get security updates next week or the week after. My $90 may have just gone to be a 6-month or 1-year beta tester. I need more stability than that. So I'm considering CentOS based on some articles I've read lately, as my solution. What I'm looking for is a good solid distro that COULD do some multi-media if I go hunt down the RPMs or if there's a YUM repository (I'm familiar with Fedora), but mostly a solid distro where I can do Java work daily and where the distro is memory efficient, solid and stable. And also where if I decide to run it for a year or more I won't be forced to upgrade. Now I believe CentOS promises all of these. My concerns, in terms of it being a safe bet are... #1 - Is there any reason to fear Red Hat bringing the hammer down and thus ruining the party? I'd love to see an FAQ or something to the effect that legally there's no way for Red Hat to block what CentOS is doing. #2 - Is the community strong? I'm new to the community and when I look on distrowatch it's way down the list. But is this accurate or is CentOS picking up steam? I get the feeling it's picking up steam. The reason this is important is because I'd hate to pick it only to watch it wither and have to go distro-hopping again. Once again, looking for stability. Any responses that can help me decide are appreciated. Thanks. Preston

problem with swap and upgrade to 4 from 3.3

Dear All, I've tried to upgrade a Centos 3.3 installation to 4.0 using YUM and some instructions I found in a thread on the Centos Forum. The initial problem I had with Python 2.3/2.2 has been resolved, and now I am trying to upgrade the kernel to 2.6 prior to the yum upgrade, unfortunately it bails out at the end with dependancy erros on Xfree86. At this point I decided to use the CDs with a the "upgradeany" option. This went fine initally but then bails out with a swap error, this is because swap on this machine is on /dev/md2 (a mirrored set) and this was not set up at the original install time, as all the other partitions were: when the machine was installed, one of my staff did not set the swap up mirrored, so I had to mirror the swap partition manually after the original install. This works fine, but the machine cant enable the swap at boot becuase it does this prior to enabling the RAID subsystem, so the swap startup fails, but once the machine is up, the swap is actually running without any manual intervention. Its this error, that stops anaconda from upgrading the OS from the CDs I note on other machines I have installed when the swap was mirrored on the original install, it still appears to enable swap prior to the RAID subsystem, without any errors. So I guessed this might be a problem with the ram disk image, so I created a new one using mkinitrd, but the swap still fails at startup, thus preventing me from using the CDs to upgrade the box. I guess I could set the swap back to an unmirrored set, run the upgrade from the CDs then mirror it again, but this is not ideal, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this little RAID niggle with the swap caused by not RAIDing the swap parition originally on install? The only kicker right now is that it is a single set of RPMs, without the client and server in separate RPMs. That will cause a conflict with the client-only UW IMAP package that normally comes with FC2+/RHEL4. One of these days I'll break the client from the server portion in the SPEC file, and host my own APT/YUM repository so it will work with APT/YUM and not generate conflict. But until then, if anyone wants my version, let me know. I try to keep up with UW IMAP releases as vunerabilities are found. OT: P4 Vs Xeon for Linux

I have just had delivered a new HP Proliant server and it is based on an Intel Xeon 2.8GHz processor. On site already we have an Acer Altos G310 with a P4 2.8GHz processor. The new HP server was destined for another site with about 30 persons to service some simple file and print sharing and to manage their email (postfix + MailScanner). The Acer is hosting our Intranet, file and print sharing and soon to have our email + bacula backup services for potentially 250 users. Performance wise, would it be worth the small effort to move the Intranet etc. onto the Xeon-based server and ship the P4 to the other site or will the potential performance gains not be significant? Any insight appreciated. Thanks

ACLs iin Centos 4

Hi There, It seems the default installer with Centos 4, enables DACs and the extra ACLs which DUMP cannot handle.... so I get errors like "DUMP: ACLs in inode #nnnn won't be dumped" since DUMP and RESTORE is integral to my back policy for some 30+ machines I would like to know if its possible to turn off the extra ACLs in the file system as I really don't need them... Can tune2fs do this for me or do I have to re-build the filesystems with some option that I currently don't know... P.

YUM - Did directories change on the mirrors?

I didn't see this in the mail archives, maybe I missed it. I'm running CentOS 3. It looks like the $releasever directory has been dropped from mirrors.centos.org. This just happened in the last week (I run a daily cron to check for updates) My yum.conf (for CentOS 3) has url's defined like: baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/$releasever/addons/$basearch/ But when I run yum I get errors: Server: CentOS-3 - Addons retrygrab() failed for: http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3/addons/i386/headers/header.info Executing failover method failover: out of servers to try Error getting file http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3/addons/i386/headers/header.info Using my browser I see that this URL doesn't exist: http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3/addons/i386/headers/header.info But this does (notice the 3/ is missing): http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/addons/i386/headers/header.info Is this a permament change or a temporary one due to server updates?
