Repost ----DPMS or hardware

List, Did not get any response from the first attempt, so thought I'd ask again. I've been bugged by the fact that the dpms function will not work on this machine, and perhaps now I have some clue as to why. Looking at the Xorg.0.log, I see where "Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)" which tells me perhaps this is the reason why it won't turn off the monitor. Also, this line prior to the other. `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/". That part I can maybe fix, but I have no clue what should be in the /dev/apm. The only thing that will happen is the monitor will go into screeensaver mode, or if no saver selected, it will do nothing, not even blank. What should the /dev/apm contain? Where does it pick up the info as to what should be in there, from a probe of the hardware? That said, does the fact that I'm using a custom video driver from ATI make any difference? GFS / CS / DS Questions about install and examples.

Hello I read about the technology and i found all amazing and great challenger, i like to test and install soon---, for this reason i have some question about this. GFS / CS I see the gfs and cs download into http://bender.it.swin.edu.au/centos-3/ and http://mirrors.csol.org/CentOS/3/csgfs/i386/RPMS/ What are the diference in both packages? Anyone has using this technologies? and example of their installation ? link of howto , etc... any conf to share? DS Fedora Directory Server and Redhat Directory Server are the same ? i read only the support of this are the difference. Any know if Fedora build support sync with Active Directory? Any have a build of srpms of DS Fedora for install into Centos 3/4? Any have the "orig" srpms of DS? i search and not found nothing... when redhat release the srpms ? anyone know this ? Help Wanted With kPPP

Hi all. Firstly, I apologize if this question has been asked before, which I'm sure it has. I'm only new to Linux although I have been 'dabbling' for awhile now with Ubuntu, Fedora Core 4, SimplyMEPIS, Xandros to name a few. I found Centos 4.1 on the cover disk of the September issue of APC Magazine and thought I'd give it a go. I want to learn linux and thought this one was the most compatible with RedHat. I know Fedora comes close but I had a few headaches with it. Anyway, what I need to know is the following. I need all users to be able to dial into the Internet using either kppp or whatever without being asked for a root password. I only have dial-up, thanks to Telstra. I've searched for days and tried various things but no luck. Please help me out with simple, step-by-step instructions aimed at a new user. I tried changing permissions, creating dialout group and adding users but no luck. Hope to hear from someone soon in regards to this issue. PS: It doesn't necessarily have to be kppp but any easy to use dialer.

Sata DVD

List, Are Sata DVD drives/recorders supported in CentOS, and if so, what needs to be done to read/write to them. On my initial install, the machine would boot from the drive, but I wound up having to use a regular ide cd-rom drive to do the install. The drive in question is a Plextor 716. Sure a waste of a good drive if I can't get to it. Thanks.. -- Snowman

centos 4.1 gnome desktop default 3 icons

I am wanting to remove the 3 default icons on the gnome desktop. the computer, the users home, and the trashcan icon. How do I do that? Thanks, Jerry

Users logged in vs. not

I'm seeing a user logged in if I do a "who" but I find by looking at "last" that user logged out after 28 minutes. Is something not being updated for some reason? Netstat does not find the user logged in, nor are there any processes associated with that pty. ??? Sam -- Snowman

OT: EVDO cards / service with CentOS

Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with using EVDO high speed wireless broadband service under CentOS? I am looking for high speed / low cost internet connectivity for an office that is in an area without DSL or Cable. My idea was to use EVDO from either Verizon or Sprint with a PCMCIA to PCI adapter card that I could stick into a CentOS machine that is used as the router/firewall. If anyone has any specific experience with these, please let me know. Thanks, Barry

OT Apache Question

Hi LIst; I would like to bring apache up to listen on an lternate port (like 81 instead of 80) however if I change the listen value in the httpd.conf file then it fails to start saying that : (13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address :81 any Ideas??

Recommendation for HTML editor

I was playing around with Nvu, and discovered it has serious problems. Mainly that it reformats one's code regardless of whether or not one selects the "Don't reformat code" option. I know there are a few HTML editors out there, so I'm not asking if they exist. What I'm wondering if there are those on this list who may have a recommendation for one they like and why. I'm also asking on some other lists. Although I'm looking for editors that will run on CentOS, I can understand if this strays too much from the topic of the list. I previously used Nagios and because of the painful configurations, I found OpenNMS. It does all I need and more, being more easier than Nagios. It uses PostgreSQL and runs on top of Tomcat4.
