ls --author ?

I want a script to determine the owner of a particular file and then "sudo -u <thatuserid> <somecomand>". I ran across the --author option of ls but that does not seem to give me anything useful. It prints a short form of the filename without any other information at all. In fact, the output of ls --author is indistinguishable from that of ls by itself: > # ls --author htdocs/* > htdocs/hlllogo.png > # ls htdocs/* > htdocs/hlllogo.png > # Is there a linux command that will return just the userid in a form that can be passed to sudo or do I have to parse ls -l <filename>? patches and current CD's [dnk]

I was reading another thread, and this stuck out at me: "This issue was fixed by the CentOS team (and integrated into our install CD) prior to it's release by the upstream provider." As patches and such are released - are they integrated into the current CD's right away? So say for example, I downloaded the server CD a few months ago, then re-downloaded, would the patches from point a to point b already be integrated into the cd's? Thanks!

I think you are right about the selinux, I will test it later tonight because I have to go to co-lo cause I locked it up. To fix this do I need reload the OS? I know I enabled selinux during the install. New user and stupid issue

Hi All, I am a new Centos user (old Red Hat and Debian user) and I'm having a very strange problem. I just installed Centos V4 and it appears to be running fine except for a weird issue. If I am on the systems console, I can write all kinds of files anywhere I choose. But if I am ssh'd in to the box it appears I can not write any files on the file systems. Since this box is across town, it makes it difficult to go to the console to make changes. Any guidance would be great. Thanks, Sean

installing yum on RHEL 7.2

im very new to RH, and even more so to YUM, but i need to install it on a RHEL 7.2 server, which i have done but installing the RPM package, and updated it via the Centos2 archives. The program i am trying to install is bacula, a backup/tape program on one of our old servers, we need to upgrade to a newer version. I didnt want to deal with the deps, so i thought yum was the way to go. well, it cant find bacula, and i even downloaded the rpm from their website, and tried to get yum to install it that way "yum install bacula.rpm" and that doesnt work either, i get a: # yum install bacula-mysql-1.38.5-4.101mdk.i586.rpm Gathering package information from servers Getting headers from: CentOS-2 base Getting headers from: CentOS-2 updates Finding updated packages Downloading needed headers Cannot find a package matching bacula-mysql-1.38.5-4.101mdk.i586.rpm can anyone shed some light on this for me? im kinda lost here. ive googled and found some good centos docs, but it doesnt solve my problem, the "localinstall" switch i guess is not supported anymore according to something i read on the net, and it doesnt work either when i try it. how can i get this installed with something that will handle the deps for me? am i even asking the right question? thanks for any help you can give. phpMyAdmin login problems

Hi! running 4.2 and the latest stable phpMyAdmin 2.8.0.1 of course all the lamp stuff is running. Alexander Dalloz helped me a good bit on the installation which I am truly gratefull. And then I brought it to a point where I can log on from local as any user and give it the anon's password and phpmyadmin will come up w/of course no privileges. I can log on as root from local w/the password and it will come up as root should w/all privileges. coming in from the web is a different story: if one tries to log on from the web to the following url and msg: The URL is this: http://rivers-bend.com/phpmyadmin/index.php The Browser page shows this: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /phpmyadmin/index.php on this server. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Apache/2.0.52 (CentOS) Server at rivers-bend.com Port 80 ok this is 1 of 3 problems I can't seem to get a handle on. 2.Well, ...trying to go by the book...I have anon users all to the same password and root having it's own. I am having trouble having a user w/his own password to have special privileges, i.e. to have control over his own database. I have even tried to set it up in phpmyadmin as root through privileges but no dice. this same user can log on w/his user name and the anon password tho. 3rd and last problem: mysql: mind you I am still trying to get the passwords staight and I know next to nothing about mysql yet. but there is reference to "host" and in the mysql.user file ...well, you know how everything is spelled out in localhost and then in "host" in my case it's rbmain1.rivers-bend.com. What I am concerned about is that I run 2 servers mirroring each other and really makes no difference who's got the ball. the other server is rbmain2 but I am hoping this will take care of itself down the line. whew! I'm sorry for all this. geez thx y'all John Rose

Why does CentOS 3.X still use yum 2.0.8?

I understand that the CentOS packages track the upstream vendor's packages as closely as possible. In the case of yum, which as far as I'm aware is added by the CentOS team, I'm curious why it isn't upgraded to a newer version that uses the repomd format. "yum" operations on CentOS 4 seem to be significantly faster than those on CentOS 3. I recall a yum upgrade happening between CentOS 4.1 and 4.2, and I'm wondering if such an upgrade could happen on CentOS 3 as well... Thanks, Greg

NTP

I'm having a bit of trouble with the ntpd on my server. When I login and execute either ntpd or ntpq, and enter either a dmpeers or peers, it returns a message "Name or service not known". It has the same ntp configuration as the x86_64 machine here at home, which works as advertized. The daemon is running and I've even done a restart to make sure it's reading in the peers. Is there something I'm missing somehow that I get the no service or name error? FWIW, you can enter a host or peer, such as time.nist.gov or ntp1.twc.weather.com but after doing that, and then issuing the dmpeers command, it returns for hosts LOCAL(0) 127.0.0.1 and *HOPF_S(0) 127.0.0.1 both with all the offsets, delay, poll, etc... Suggestions? Sam
