LVM Snapshots -broken ? Ever worked ?

I've upgraded my x86_64 4.2 box to the latest kernel 2.6.9.34 and tried an lvm snapshot. It worked fine and I was able to mount the snapshot etc. Now I cannot seem to remove the snapshot. If I try a 'lvremove' it asks if I want to remove the 'active' snapshot, if I say yes it just hangs and the box goes to 99% wait io, however the disk lights do not come on during this. The lvremove process is not straceable so I've got no idea whats going on with it. Luckily I chose to snapshot /tmp so it is not a show stopper. What I did to get around it was to comment out my tmp lv from fstab and just allow /tmp to be part of the root filesystem on the root lv. I deliberately filled up the snapshot so that it was marked inactive but it still thinks it is active when I run the lvremove command again. I also tried to lvremove the tmp lv, not the snapshot, and it said it couldnt remove the lv while there was a snapshot. I found a thread on the forums where Karanbir Singh states that this sort of thing was broken in early 4 series but may work in 4.3. Does anyone know how I can clean this up ? Cheers, Bards.

swap_free messages in log

This morning I noticed the following message in my log file. swap_free: bad swap file entry 10000000 swap_free: bad swap file entry 20000000 swap_free: bad swap file entry 10000000 swap_free: bad swap file entry 20000000 a few more times... After rebooting I no longer see it. I have an intel 865 motherboard, 2.4 celeron, 2 - 300GIG seagate sata drives as software RAID-1. I have had to reboot the machine sometimes but there were never any messages on the console or the log files. Before my 300GIG drives I used to run 2-120GIG drives and had the same problem. An occasional reboot fixed it. I got new drives and I still have some issue? Any thoughts on something to try? Thanks. Jerry

Groups and rpms

yum grouplist is almost ok for learning what groups are available.Though it does not distinguish between base/manditory and added in the installed list. But yum list is not really helpful. I would like to see something of what rpms are within what group. then what rpms are not in any group. And which groups and stand-a-lone rpms are base. maybe it can be teased out of comp.xml...

Source RPM

Hi All, I am using CentOs 4.2 . I need to change the kernel rpm . I downloaded the kernel-2.6.9.EL .src.rpm. after installing this rpm i changed the linux-2.6.9.tar.gz . Bu changing the source i made the rpm. But gives the error . Is it anyother file also required?? . Can anyone knows how i can do this ?

X broken after up2date

Hello, I've installed Centos 4.2 X86_64 on a PE2800 box with a Radeon 700 card and a generic Dell monitor. After running up2date before putting this box in production and make a reboot I can't get into X anymore, my monitor shows a message "out of sync" and that's it. So I tried logging in via ssh to run 'setup' and to use the X setup program, but it doesn't want to start. So I changed /etc/inittab to 3 insead of 5 and rebooted again. Now running setup from the box itself still doesn't seem to work quite well. I only get the message probing and that's about it. The videcard or monitor are still working flawlessy because using a live CD with X isn't a problem. Any ideas what went wrong? Because I'm thinking of reinstalling but don't want to run into this same problem again.. kind regards, Geert

getrichquick crazy user's email habits

greetings i have a lady that likes the getrichquick stuff and has subscribed to just about every possible spammers mail queue in the known universe. right now she has 2290 emails in her mailbox and i cannot view them in squirrelmail to dust em i dont want to dust her email just yet.... i want to learn from this situation how to better admin for a single user as well as the entire system including other domains etc. i need some advise and, of course, i dont mind reading docs etc ummmm what docs and files should i be concerned about in regards to *her only* so that anything that has a rating of above 3.8 addressed to *her* gets deleted and what should i be looking for in squirrelmail or imap that allows me to up the amount of emails that one can view via squirrelmail ive been searching for "squirrelmail limits" and other things like that to no avail so far. i have the php stuff set correctly and bumped it up for attachments and all that yet im still not finding the other limits i need to address. should i be looking in imap? php? or squirrelmail? or? thanks in advance. - rh -- Robert Hanson - Abba Communications Computer & Internet Services (509) 624-7159 - www.abbacomm.net

To start Kickstart Configurator, select Applications (the main menu on the panel) => System Tools => Kickstart, or type the command /usr/sbin/system-config-kickstart. Can't find it. Now my system has: %packages @ gnome-desktop @ base-x @ kde-desktop Amongst others. So where is it hiding? Also when you get to: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-4-Manual/sysadmin-guide/… How do you specify the geometry of the drive that will be used? I will be using a Toshiba MK4018GAS (http://www.netcomdirect.com/tomk40at429n.html). I will want to include a Hibernate partition....

CentOS 4.x - Kickstart

Anyone point me in the direction of a good howto on kickstarting an 1850 or 2850 with the latest 4.x release - I presume one does not use a ks floppy anymore as the kernel would be too big ? thanks
