Backup FAQ: PLEEZE include in FAQ?

I know there are a million ways to skin a cat, but we must have 1,000,001 discussed in the archives already. I guess folks don't know about "search". So, I'm hoping that the pending FAQ might have mention of one or more of the *excellent* threads resident in the archives regarding backup? And just so this post is not a total waste, I'll mention that cpio can be your friend if you worry about device nodes, etc. It has many features, is well respected, is "mature", ... However it is not a backup *system*, but a good all-around tool for "roll your own" folks who aren't happy with rsynch for whatever reason. It supports tar formats, has check summing, ... Now, please. Anyone with backup Q's, check the archives first, get a preliminary feel for which way you lean and then query the list for *new* insights, opinions, recommendations, etc. after you spew a few words about the feelings you got during investigations. No offense intended and if you take any, you get to keep it. TIA -- Bill

backing up my system with dump

I'm running CentOS 4.3 on Intel. I don't have any tape device on my system for backup, but I have an entire disk (/dev/sdb) for backup ... my question is: How can I backup ALL my filesystems to some place of my backup hdd (dev/sdb) using dump/restore? I don't want to use tar. Regards Israel

Permission denied using mount.cifs

I'm having a strange problem mounting a share from a Windows 2003 server using cifs: mount.cifs //osirus.ficticious.org/inetpub /inetpub -ouser=transfer,pass=dkfhjdjskd It comes back immediately with: mount error 13 = Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs) However, the command below works. (abeit with about a 15 second wait before it comes back): mount.smbfs //osirus.ficticious.org/inetpub /inetpub -ousername=transfer,password=dkfhjdjskd Info from smbclient -L: OS=[Windows Server 2003 3790 Service Pack 1] Server=[Windows Server 2003 5.2] Anyone else familiar with this problem? CentOS Folding@home team breaks through

Congratulations to all members of the team for contributing towards breaking through the 2,000 place barrier. In the overall team rankings we are now in position 1885! Considering how 'young' the team is in terms of how long its been going thats a stupendous achievement! Well done all! firefox-1.5.0.2-2.1.c4.centos.i386.rpm in testing -error message

firefox-1.5.0.2-2.1.c4.centos.i386.rpm in the testing repo produces this error when running it as non-rrot and also as root Firefox could not install this item because "install.rdf" (provided by the item) is not well formed or does not exist. Please contact the author about this problem. How to reproduce this message :- 1. download and upgrade firefox-1.5.0.2-2.1.c4.centos.i386.rpm from the testing repo 2. erase the previous firefox 1.5.0.1 from centosplus and install the new one. RPM for postgresql 8-* for CentOS4?

Hi All, is there an RPM for 4-1 for postgresql? I did a yum, and the latest is only 7-4 Installing: postgresql-server i386 7.4.8-1.RHEL4.1 base 3.0 M and I need at least 8-* Any ideas where to find an RPM for CentOS4-1? Cheers. Mark Sargent.

Hello, we are trying to get a QLogic 4050C flying on CentOS 4.3 in an Opteron system ... So far I was able to download and install the drivers from QL's website. I can also successfully connect to my remote iscsi device now, but as soon as I access it (e.g. formating the device) the connections "hangs" and does not recover until I hardly reboot the machine. Is anyone else experiencing problems with QLogic iSCSI cards? Is anyone happy with them on CentOS? ;) Thanks for your comments, -- Stephan A.
