Kickstart install via network, nonexistant disk sda

Hello all, I have 3 Supermicro 1u servers, each with dual 250gb SATA drives. I have a server with CentOS 5 64bit setup for pxebooting and kickstart installs. I have a kickstart install file that doesn't specify the disks specifically. It works like a champ, and the operating system installs and completes. I have a kickstart install file that specifies the disk devices (sda, sdb) pulled and modified from another similiar system. My goal here is configuring software RAID. Whenever I try to use the file for software raid, she dies with an error: "Specified nonexistant disk sda in clearpart command" ... if I removed the --drives-sda,sdb from the clearpart, it will just fail on the part command for RAID. Now, I struggled with machine #1 for a long time, then realized that it is probably the onboard raid in the BIOS, which isn't a real RAID. Turned it off, and it appeared to be the solution. I thought I was well on my way. I did the same for machines #2 and #3 which had no installation attempts, and they would not work. I can take the disks from machine #1, which will run through a reinstall fine, and throw them in machine #2 and *it will install*. So it seems to be an issue with the partition information on the disk. I tried doing a dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda (bs=1024 count=10000) to try to overwrite any RAID metadata and partition information and what not. During the install, when I have the error that sda is invalid, I can hit the vty2 (emergency shell) and easily run fdisk /dev/sda and print the partition table. So the device is there, and accessable. I've tried every incarnation of clearpart commands. hi there, i try to install centos 5 via http, but i don't know what to put in when it asks for "Web site name" & "CentOS directory". can someone give me this info? can i used mirror.centos.org & /centos/5/os/i386/??? i only have the boot cd & i don't want to download and burn all 6 cds. thanks

Some thoughts, for anyone faced with this type of problem on a dual boot box in the future: My first thought was to try to Rescue the WinXP Spanish language installation that came on the Dell Dimension 2400, out of the Dell factory. Later, I decided to wipe the entire drive, since I now have a WinXP English language Restore CD and I wanted to redo CentOS5, so I would have room to experiment with VMware Server. With regard to restoration or rescue of WinXP on a dual boot box, I believe the method Ross explained last week, about doing it from CentOS5, would be the fastest and easiest. For those with boxes dedicated 100% to WinXP, I believe the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, which Phil mentioned (based on the BartPE Live CD) is the way to go. I downloaded the 196.6 MB file from http://www.ubcd4win.com and I have copied the contents of the Dell WinXP Restore CD to my HD. I like the fact that they explain workarounds, for those using a Dell WinXP Restore CD to make the UBCD4WIN CD. One of the mistakes I made, was after I got the box in 2005. On other new systems, I've wiped the drive and done clean installs, with four (4) partitions for Windows. Had I done that in 2005, I would have known that the Drivers for the box are not on the Dell WinXP Restore CD or on the Dell Driver CD that came with the box. Fortunately, last week, after I mounted the NTFS partition read only, I not only copied my data onto CD's, I copied other files, which turned out to include the Driver for the NIC. I believe the audio and video Drivers are also on the CD I made last week. :-) I went ahead and wiped the drives on the boxes of my wife and daughter, since they were out of town. The installation on my wife's box (Compaq Evo D300v) was the easiest. All of the Drivers for the Compaq Evo were on the Dell Restore CD, with the exception of the Driver for an inexpensive store brand web cam we bought recently. I will need to buy OEM license's for that box and daughters box. More $ for Microsoft.... All of the Drivers for my daughters box (Dell Dimension 4300) were on the Dell WinXP Restore CD too. I've configured wife and daughter as Restricted Users in WinXP, as Ross suggested. Special thanks, to everyone who responded with ideas! Lanny

apc deemon

Hi, I'm using Centos 5 (64bit) and connected an APC battery to the server and used the USB cable for monitoring this setup, but I can't find the apc daemon anymore in the offcial yum repo's. Has aocd become obsolete and has it been replaced by something else or do i need to add a third party repo? kind regards, euroka

A real bluetooth device manager for gnome?

I would like to move away from command-line tools for my bluetooth devices. The gnome bluetooth manager is extremely limited in features. And I can't find anything going on like on the gnome-bluetooth site. Any one have any experience one this? It would be nice to start getting on par with Macs and Win systems....

Linux driver for HP Laserjet 3500 printer - yum won't install

I'm trying to install the linux driver for an HP Colour Laserjet 3500 in CentOS 5. I've installed the kde.repo (with appropriate priorities set up), but when I try yum install pxljr-1.1-1.i386.rpm, yum says 'nothing to do' - is this because the priority protection won't let it install from the kde repo? The alternative approach seems to be to use yum localinstall with the downloaded package, but then I get the message that 'the package is not signed'. So how do I resolve that please - the instructions regarding 'signing of packages' don't seem very clear to those of us who weren't 'born and bred' on linux! Thanks, Andy

Partioning Error: Dual Boot, WinXP & CentOS5, 27 GB Free space; my error is?

Hello: Starting Friday afternoon, I blew away the installations on the three (3) boxes we use as Desktops. On two (2) of them (my Dell Dimension 2400 and my wife's Compaq Evo D300v), I have MS Windows XP and CentOS5 running. :-) On my daughters box (Dell Dimension 4300) I am having problems with the partitioning. Probably this is due to some mistake I have made, with regard to "Active" or "Primary" partitions? The HD has four (4) NTFS partitions on dev/hda. hda1 > hda4. According to the partition table shown in the CentOS5 installation, there is 27925 MB of Free Space on the HD. If I try to create a /boot partition (100 MB) or an LVM, I get: "Error partitioning - Could not allocate requested partitions. Partitioning failed. Could not allocate partitions as primary partitions. Not enough space left to create partition for /boot More or less the same error: "Automatic partitioning errors - You have not defined a root (/) partition. This can happen if not enough space." Hi. I want to remove one of three hard drives. But if I just remove the disk, Linux signals errors and enters administrative mode requesting corrective actions which, of course, I do not know. If I reconnect the drive, everything returns to normality. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance. MLM
