I have some suspect drives that had errors report but format fine at the controller level. I would like to see how many bad blocks the format encountered and remapped. If there are a large number of these then I do not want to use the drives in any critical applications. If the number is small then I will assume that the drive is basically fine to use and that the errors were localized. Since I posted my original inquiry I have discovered that some of the drive manufacturers have T&D utilities that might allow me to get at this information. The main problem here is that they tend to be Windows based which means that I will need to setup a Windows system just to test the drives. I would rather test them in the systems that the will be running in (one is CentOS 4.5 and one is RHEL3). Seagate does have an older utility that supposedly will run at the Linux CLI (their terminology) which I will be trying out. mounting nfs as httpd_sys_content_t under selinux

I have a NFS mount that I want apache to be able to serve files from. According to this doc: http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.1/Deployment_Guide/rhlcommon-section-00… I should be able to mount it with a context that will allow apache to access it. But when I try the command they suggest: [root@vm-37:~] mount -t nfs -o \ context=system_u:object_r:httpd_sys_content_t \ 192.168.1.100:/data/test /mnt/test It mounts, but when I do: [root@vm-37:~]# ls -lZ /mnt drwxr-xr-x 65534 65534 system_u:object_r:nfs_t test It doesn't show the correct context. (I don't know if it matters that I don't have a user with UID 65534, only the remote NFS server has that.) And sure enough, apache still can't serve from it. The problem is that I have other nfs directories that I don't want httpd to access, even accidentally if we ever point httpd at those directories. So... any ideas on the nfs mount with the context option? I'm running CentOS-5.1 with latest updates of everything. johnn

CentOS 5.1 on intel DQ35JO , Q35 chipsed based board

Hi, i was trying to install CentOS 5.1 on new machine based on Intel Q35 desktop board, witch 2 SATA disks (configured as RAID 1) , 8GB RAM and Intel Core2 QUADCORE. The first problem was with install - it hangs before installer startup at ACPI messages. So i installed it with ACPI=off switch. The first problem is : Dec 7 09:54:01 vmhost1 kernel: BIOS bug, no explicit IRQ entries, using default mptable. (tell your hw vendor) Dec 7 09:54:01 vmhost1 kernel: Processors: 1 Which kernel should i use? I have default installed kernel. The second problem is with LVM (probably raid on board - in bios i switched in sata mode to raid, and created in raid utility RAID1 volume from those 2 disks: /dev/sdb1 [ 101.94 MB] Found duplicate PV hpGVb3U5Q0lxFe1LN6eJpSCJSWs0xfpu: using /dev/sdb2 not /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 [ 297.99 GB] LVM physical volume [root@vmhost1 archive]# What does it means and how can i fix this? RAID-1 strategy for a CentOS/Xen server?

Hi, I'm planning to migrate my current server configuration: AMD Athlon/X2 FreeBSD 62-Release 2 x 250GB HW RAID1 (all partitions RAIDed, incl. swap) to a Xen/CentOS config: AMD Athlon/X2 Dom0 CentOS 51 Xen 31 Dom1/1 FreeBSD 7 Dom1/2 CentOS 51 ... To "best preserve" RAID1 mirroring protections of OS, Data, etc *AND* optimize performance, how should I setup RAID for the "new" configurations? Should DOM0 be RAIDed? Each DOM1, as well? Should I continue to use HW RAID or switch to SW? A mix? I understand I can do any/all ... choosing the "right" option is the goal, here. Advice is appreciated. Regards, Bob Tompkins

Minimal install for CentOS 5?

Hello, I'm new to the linux world (long time FreeBSD user), and I'm wondering if there's an easy way to install CentOS 5 without the GUI and unnecessary services? I see there's a server cd for CentOS 4, but I didnt see anything like that for CentOS 5. Am I looking in the wrong places, or is it just necessary to manually select the minimal set of packages? I have been dragging my feet on remote display, and have just gotten VNC going to have SOMETHING to move off the start line. But I need the 'best' for different situations, so I want to rate them. 1 to 3 where 1 is the 'best' for the catagory and 3 the loser. VNC RDESKTOP FREENX Server memory Server cpu client memory client cpu bandwidth thanks. I AM search the net for this information. So far have not found the magic query request :)

Setting read/write file access on cifs mounted file system

I'm accessing a cifs mounted file system (on a MS Windows XP machine) from my CentOS 5 box. I can't edit/save files on the remote cifs system using OpenOffice etc, although I can copy/paste whole files OK (ie from CentOS to cifs). I've looked at the permissions on the mounted cifs and see that I have folder access "create and delete files" but not file access (the setting is blank). I've tried setting file access (as root) to read and write, but it doesn't allow me to do this - any suggestions as to how to resolve this please? Thanks, Andy

VNCsever not starting at boot

When I run system-config-services, it shows vncserver set to start at boot. in /etc/inittab I have init 3 vncserver does not start at boot. I log in on the console as root and service vncserver start and it starts with some warning messages about bad display name in "add" command, but I do not see where these are logged to copy them into this message. Once I start it from the console, I have trouble using the vnc client to access the server. I really need for the vncserver to start at boot, as I want it to run in a place with no monitor or keyboard....
