2.6 memory management question

Hello all. I have a centos 4.4 box (2.6.9-42.0.10.ELsmp) with 7gig of ram that doesn't seem to be using swap (also 7gig now). I say "seem" because I've noticed ram utilization run around 95% (with oracle and friends running) and then firing up a couple apps to use that last 5% will stop the machine dead in it's tracks. I ran across some reading[0] about /proc/sys/vm/swappiness and how it affects the kernels decisions when dealing with swap, but it's not all that clear to me whether this is the source of the problem. It seems like the kernel just isn't using swap at all. I've double checked my swap partition in fstab, ran mkswap again, double checked it's availability with vmstat -s but still it's just not getting used. Sunday, the box died around 3am and sar seems to show memory use on the rise right up till it hurled[1] (I just stuck another gig in the box monday, so sar only shows 6gig on sunday) Anyone know whats up with this? PS: swap is an LVM partition. How should I create a repo on Centos 2.1?

I tracked down a createrepo rpm "for RHL 7.x, AS 2.1" etc (hosted by Dag), but it's uninstallable. Eventually I managed to create an rpm from the source (actually, that's fairly easy when onw knows to say "python2"), but python-urlgrabber has completely defeated me. According to Dag, the problem is that "upstream" doesn't see the need to support RHAS2.1/Centos2.1/RHL7.x amd such. While I can, if forced, solve the problem by a personal visit to the site or by creating a repo on the other side of the Internet, there should be a better general solution. From LiveCD, mount hda1 gives resource busy

Hello: I booted from the CentOS 4.4 CD. I am trying to mount the partitions on the hard drive of the physical machine (Fedora Core). I did: mkdir /mnt/hda1 chmod 755 /mnt/hda1 mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1 I get back: mount: /dev/hda1 already mounted or /mnt/hda1 busy I checked with df. I don't see hda1 anywhere. UPS question

Hello folks, I'm about to install Centos on a new server and this will be my first "exposure" if you will to Centos. I come from an RH/Fedora background. Anyway, is there a list somewhere that will tell me what UPS batteries are compatible with Centos 4 (brand/model)? I figured before I go out and buy something I better check to see what's supported. 3ware cards and new firmware in 9.4.1 codeset

I just saw the following in the release notes for the new firmware for the later 3ware cards; Improved CIFS performance The firmware has been tuned to greatly increase performance with CIFS (Common Internet File System) protocol. However, this has resulted in performance with the Linux ext3 file system that is slower than earlier releases. We recommend that you use other Linux file systems, such as XFS. So it looks like ext3 performance would be worse. What are they thinking? They are going to drive linux people away. -- MailScanner is like deodorant... You hope everybody uses it, and you notice quickly if they don't!!!!

CentOS 4 - prevent X from installing?

So, I've just gone through a enw CentOS 4.4 install. I selected the "Custom" installation type, and then in the part for selecting which packages to install, I specifically did NOT select X, Gnome or KDE, nor any of the graphical tools. However, when it finished installing and rebooted, I still ended up with X installed, a graphical login screen and default run level of 5. Does anyone know which default packages might have caused X Windows to have been dragged in? I'll do some digging, but I had an idea this might be a common problem. postgres 7 - CentOS 4.4

Hi Firstly apologies but i have to install an app that uses postgres but i am more a MySQL/Oracle guy so i maybe doing something really wrong here.. I am following instructions for creating a DB user and encountering this # createuser -ADP -U postgres foo Enter password for new user: Enter it again: createuser: could not connect to database template1: FATAL: IDENT authentication failed for user "postgres" In a standard postgres install whats causing this? I presume its because the user postgres has a pwd but what is this and why am i not being prompted to enter this? Thanks and apologies as i know this is not directly a CentOS problem

Balance of tcp traffic

Hello, Anyone know a method to discriminate traffic by preference?, for example this channels: High preference traffic. Low preference traffic. All traffic in the same interface eth0, and two servers in the same machine, one in slow channel and one in high preference channel.
