The CentOS Project at Linux Tag 2007

LinuxTag 2007, the World's #1 Linux Expo and Conference, takes place in Berlin from the 30th of May until 2nd of June 2007. LinuxTag - since its beginning in 1996 - has been organized by a team of volunteers as a meeting point for Developers, commercial Linux Vendors and Users. This year's LinuxTag stands under the motto "Where .COM meets .ORG". The CentOS project will be represented at LinuxTag 2007 by four of our Core Development Team members (Lance Davis, Ralph Angenendt, Dag Wieers and Daniel De Kok) as well as by members of the CentOS community from Europe. The CentOS project will have a booth at LinuxTag (Booth 35 in Hall 12), where we will present our newest Release: CentOS 5. You can also see presentations about Xen, using CentOS 4.5 running inside of CentOS 5. Also some nice 3D graphics with compiz on the CentOS Desktop. We're open for discussions about our project, Enterprise Distributions in general and would like to answer any questions you have about our project. Remote system up/down monitoring tool?

I have a small number of boxes in different locations, and currently have a fairly crude cron job running on each, which does a ping of one or more of the other boxes, and if the ping fails, it emails me to say the other box might be down. It then emails me again the next time the other box appears to be up. Of course, this can't distinguish between the remote box really being down and there being a network problem somewhere between the local and remote boxes. I've been mulling over the idea of a more sophisticated scheme, where a number of boxes send each other messages, indicating not only their presence, but which other boxes they believe to be up. Then if a box goes down, the other boxes all see it has gone and agree that it really is down. However, if there is instead a network outage or routing flap so that a box is reachable from some places but not all, it might be possible to distinguish this case. So my question is: does anyone know of an existing too that does this sort of thing? Oddity with kernel built under CentOS 5.0

Yesterday I found a need to have the NTFS module support in my CentOS 5.0 at home, so I happily installed the 8.1.4 source, prepped it (after deleting the rhel and olpc lines per Johnny's notice earlier in this list), made the config with a ".nx" version name using make menuconfig (copying the config from the SOURCES directory, editing it to include the # x86_64 line and copying it back), changing the spec file to make the release also have a ".nx" after the embedded one. The kernel built and installed without errors, but when it booted (this morning), there were massive errors. It did come up, but without the graphical desktop, so I went in and poked around and found 16 of these: May 29 07:58:28 localhost modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.18-8.1.4.el5.nx.nx/modules.dep: No such file or directory ".nx.nx"????? The kernel rpm is this: -rw-r--r-- 1 mhr users 15318350 May 29 03:34 kernel-2.6.18-8.1.4.el5.nx.x86_64.rpm and the running version is this: Linux mhrichter 2.6.18-8.1.4.el5.nx.nx #1 SMP Tue May 29 03:11:28 PDT 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I got around this by creating a symlink: drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 May 29 08:31 2.6.18-8.1.4.el5.nx/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 May 29 10:56 2.6.18-8.1.4.el5.nx.nx -> 2.6.18-8.1.4.el5.nx/ My question is: why is the kernel version getting that extra ".nx" in it? I didn't see this problem when I built my 5.0 test kernel at work, and I never saw anything like it in 4.4. unattended install via nfs

Hello, Does anyone have a guide for setting up an nfs server for unattended deployment of centos5? Basically what i want to do is boot a system from CD media, pass a boot parameter nfs, and ks= options then walk away, the box goes out to the nfs server, finds the kickstart file, reads, and does it. I've got several machines and i'd rather not do manual installs. Thanks. Dave.

I tried for a very long time to set up a RAID 10 (striped mirror) during install and never figured out a way of doing it. I was trying to do this for `/'. Install only wants one level of RAID and can not seem to handle more than one. After the system was installed and up and running, I probably could have set up a mount point that was RAID 10, but not for `/'. -- Brent L. Bates (UNIX Sys. Admin.) Hi, I have 4 x 500GB PATA Harddisk and I like to have them striped and mirrored. What is the best practise? Raid 0+1 or 1+0.. And how do i go about it? Thanks

centosplus :: php5 + mysql4 :: possible?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone came across this problem before: I'm trying to install php5 from the centosplus repository but it wants me to upgrade from mysql4 to mysql5 (also provided by the centosplus repository). Has anyone come up with a good work-around for this? I'd like to have php5 and mysql4 talking to each other in the most yum/rpm friendly way possible. Note: While mysql5 will run my databases just fine, mysql4 is a fixed requirement for this project. Thanks, LC.

The do not say it because Watts = Volts x Amps ONLY in DC or 100% resistive AC loads. If it is an inductive load, it isn't that simple, that is why they have `VA', `Volts x Amps', ratings. There can be a phase difference between the voltage and current, thus the `Wattage' is less than the `VA' rating. A `1500VA' UPS is going to list less than `1500 Watts'. Just check out any UPS manufacturerer's specs. and the `VA' and wattage ratings will be different. To be safe, I take the voltage rating of the equipment and multiply it by the current rating to come up with the `VA' rating. I know APC says to not go over 80% of the UPS rated load, so take your `VA' value and divide by 0.80 to get the `VA' rating you want your UPS to be. This will probably give you an UPS a little bigger than you need, but it is better to be a bit too large than too small. -- Brent L. Bates (UNIX Sys. Admin.) GFS: Howto - Help/ Inconsistent - Wiki Volunteer?

Hi, I am using this document along with the following links to try and assemble a GFS set of mahcines: 1. Log on as the root user. 2. Run up2date --installall --channel Label for Red Hat Cluster Suite. The following example shows running the command for i386 RPMs: # up2date --installall --channel rhel-i386-as-4-cluster 3. (Optional) If you are installing Red Hat GFS, run up2date --installall --channel Label for Red Hat GFS. Getting Samba to work in CentOS 4.4

I'm trying to access files on a networked Windows machine from my linux box (CentOS 4.4) using SMBFS mounting but it doesn't work. I've checked the Service Configuration and there's no sign of the smb entry in the list. Do I have to install this additionally and if so how, as I thought it would be installed as part of the standard workstation package? Andy
