text installer used in Linux?

Can someone tell me the name of the text installer used in distros like Debian / Ubuntu? I'd like to create one upon first time boot for a CentOS-based virtual application I'm making. So, after someone boots up, I'd like to have a little GUI thing ask them questions and then put those variables in a file (or maybe use something like sed to edit other network config files).

Forcing ifcfg-eth0 to use the same nic in multi nic machine

I am new to CentOS (coming from Fedora) and I really like it! I am having difficulty getting one of my machines to boot and assign the same designation of eth0 and eth1 to the same nics consistantly. I have an MSI motherboard with 2 nics on the board. Strangely enough both nics report the same MAC address. This is not an issue since I use the computer to route between two different subnets so they don't see each other on the network. The problem comes when I reboot and they race against each other to see which one will get to be eth0. If they switch my routing dies and I loose access with out rebooting and hoping they switch back or switching the actual cables. I have googled and searched my networking resources but all of the fixes that I have found focus on using the MAC address to solve the problem but in my case they are the same. The only difference is that they use different drivers. One is a Realtek and other is a Marvell. I have turned off Kudzu or they reconfigured every time a booted the machine. It only happens every once in a while but I need it to be consistent. Any suggestions or pushes in the right direction would be most appreciated. Doug Coats

Using a program

OS: CentOS 5 x86. There is a program I am using which requires a start up service running. The service runs in Runlevels 3,4,5. When I am using the program as a root it works fine. When I am using it as a user it produces an error. If I do as a root, /etc/init.d/program start, then I can use it as a simple user. I have emailed the company that makes it and had no response. Any idea on how to fix this?

I am familiar with centos and this forum, and have some rhel / centos questions. Therefore I'm asking the question here I am about to install rhel4.5 on a hp dl380 with 4 disc's. The standard rhel installation installers all in one partition? Will there be any advantage of splitting the file system up? What would be a good recommended partition table for a server running scripts handling big amount of transactions? Normally i would do something like this, but i need to ask the question since I haven't installed on a production machine before /boot /opt /usr /var /tmp /home An other thing, I haven't installed rhel before, only centos and notice a difference in that yum is not a part of rhel, and later figuring out that no updates are possible since I installed without the graphics's. Are there other significant differences between CentOS and RHEL?

Services and processes sometimes die mysteriously, but probably not on a daily basis. Adding Things to Rescue Mode

I'd like to add a few things to rescue mode. I'm tired of having to use a floppy with hardware drivers when ever I need to go into rescue mode and there are a few other utilities that I'd like to add as well. How would I go about doing this? Matlab 2007a and C5 out-of-box broken

I had to reinstall C5 64-bit out-of-box on two machines. Before the reinstall, Matlab 2007a 64-bit worked fine. Now, I get "failed to start the desktop; failure loading desktop class". matlab -nojvm works fine. The reinstall was not an upgrade. I tested on two identical systems - one before I installed the NVIDIA drivers, and one after. No difference. I installed jre and jdk 1_5.0.11 on one system, and redirected /usr/bin/java to the newer one. No luck. I tried installing Matlab as root and sudo, running it as root and plain user. No difference. Web sites aren't helping me much. I performed a complete install (selecting ALL items from EVERY catagory of the C5 64-bit DVD). The machines are not on any network and never will be (both isolated systems) Anyone else with ideas? Thanks. Scott

I just had occasion to do a fresh install of CentOS 5 on my IBM/Lenovo T42p laptop today (had been upgraded from C4 to C5beta to C5 for testing/QA purposes and was a bit of a mess), so I just went through configuring the IPW2200 from scratch. There is no /usr/share/system-config-network/netconfpkg/gui/network.xpm on my system, but I do not see any errors starting system-config-network from the command line. [root@hazard2 ~]# rpm -ql system-config-network | fgrep network.xpm /usr/share/system-config-network/pixmaps/network.xpm > I don't know how to add the right adapter because it won't allow me to > select the right one or add a new one of the form Intel Coporation > PRO/Wireless 2200BG. I simply loaded ipw2200-firmware-3.0-3.nodist.rf from RPMforge, added "alias eth1 ipw2200" to /etc/modprobe.conf, rebooted, and the device showed up as eth1/Wireless in system-config-network (both the Devices and Hardware tabs). Listed as "Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection" on the Hardware tab. (Comments about needing dkms in an earlier reply were off-base. That was apparently cobwebs from C4 days.) If the IPW2200 is showing up as Ethernet rather than Wireless it is incorrect. You may have leftovers from earlier attempts to install from tarballs. Given that and the other system-level problems noted above, I'd try a fresh install before going to the Redmond OS. Only took about 2 hours here from booting for a network install through a fully-updated and configured Workstation/Development install with additional 3rd-party packages (including Octave from EPEL, octave-forge, Acrobat Reader, Sun Java, Adobe Flash, VMware, and WiFi - cheating a bit - I had other working systems to draw configs from and pre-built local packages for acroread, octave-forge, and Java). Thanks Phil, I might just do a complete re-install of CentOS 5 when I return home from holiday in Spain tomorrow! This attempt to get wifi working has kept me occupied for the last 2 weeks or so (among other things). The problem is, I have to remember exactly what are the correct steps along the way so that I don't end up with the same problem(s)! Andy Sorry you're having such problems. [5.0] little bug confirmation request

can someone do this: 1. download this archive http://plone.googlecode.com/files/Plone-2.5.3-final.tar.gz 2. open it using midnight commander 3. copy its content to any directory 4. check ATReferenceBrowserWidget\skins\ATReferenceBrowserWidget subdirectory 5. there should be files referencebrowser_startupDirectory.py, referencebrowser_queryCatalog.py, referencebrowser_insertHistory.py, referencebrowser_filterBreadCrumbs.py 6. there are? on one CentoS 5.0 machine everything is fine; on other (with the same updates) those files have shorted names, (referencebrowser_queryCat, referencebrowser_filterBr, and so); I checked it twice 7. what and why is happening?
