I have found another reference that describes sub-packages. So the unqualified %files directive is for the base package and the qualified ones are for the sub-packages. Is this correct? Given this snippet: %files -f ruby.files ... %files devel -f ruby-devel.files I speculate (since the rpm manual is not very helpful on the matter) that if --target= is not specified then the first file command will execute but not the third and include all of the files listed in ruby.files only whereas if --target=devel is specified to the rpmbuild command then the first and second commands will execute and include the contents of ruby.files and ruby-devel.files. Problem with VSFTP

I have a vsftp server hosted on custom dyndns site. We have a 4mb ADSL connection. When I tried to download the files from the ftp server with wan IP address or the dyndns address it downloads some files and disconnects. Please find below an extract from the log file (ace ftp client). I would appreciate if someone could guide me, possibly with a solution for this problem. MD5 and NIS

Does anybody know whether it is possible to enable MD5 passwords for NIS and local passwords? Is it just a matter of running authconfig --enablemd5 and new passwords will use MD5 and old ones will still work? Of course using LDAP might be a "better" solution (if it was easy to install). I've tried googling and didn't get any useful answers... Jeremy

Performance of CentOS as a NAT gateway

We have a single 3GHz P4 box w/2GB RAM running CentOS 3.8, acting as a gateway, which serves multiple IP address, having one virtual interface for each IP, e.g., eth0:1, eth0:2, etc. These interfaces/IPs are on the public internet. Each of these IP addresses is the NAT address for a different small LAN. All of these LANs are connected through a single Linksys 100Mb switch, to eth1 on the gateway. Thus, in case it's not obvious from that description, traffic from LAN X travels through through the switch to eth1 on the gateway, where iptables translates it to the IP address of eth0:X and thence out to the net. The gateway is totally idle except for handling these NATs; no other processes except the usual OS bookkeeping. All NIC and switch hardware involved is 100Mb. This all works, but we're experiencing network congestion somewhere. The LANs appear to become saturated when only about 10Mb of total traffic is passing through the public IPs. That is, we seem to be losing almost 90% of our capacity somewhere in the translation. Before we attempt to sweep this under the rug by using Gb NICs/switches for the LANs, we'd like to understand what's going on. I can't find any recent statistics for Linux NAT performance, but the older stuff I can find (e.g. 50k packets/sec for a P3-450Mhz) seems to indicate that the gateway should easily be up to the task of handling the NAT traffic. Am I wrong about this? Is there any way to diagnose whether the NAT is the bottleneck? Would we benefit from upgrading to a newer CentOS (2.6 kernel as opposed to 2.4)? Or is it more likely to be the switch, in which case what would be a recommended replacement for the Linksys? I can provide more details in private mail if necessary. Boot problem with CENTOS 5

I had everything up and running. All of the help thus far was excellent. Thanks! I then did the updates that the OS prompted to do and selected reboot now once they completed. Now when the server reboots after the bios info I get the following when the OS starts to initialize: GRUB And it hangs there. How do I clear this? FIx this? Thanks in advance, Chuck

rpm spec files for ruby

I am trying to package ruby-1.8.6 for CentOS-4.5 and I would like to take a look at the spec files used for ruby-1.8.1 that ships with CentOS. Is there any place that I can see these or could someone do me the kindness of sending them to me? I am also confused as to how one breaks out the component parts of a build into separate rpm packages. The source distribution from ruby-lang.org seemingly permits only three install options; all, no-docs and docs-only. How and where does one refactor the build scripts to create separate rpms for ruby, ruby-libs, ruby-devel, ruby-docs, rdoc, irb, ri, and ruby-tcltk? I would appreciate greatly any guidance here. I have zero experience with creating rpm packages, but I ran across a reference to checkinstall in a reply to one of my queries on ruby-forum and have decided to have a go at putting an rpm together, for my own purposes if it proves beyond my capability to do so for the community.
