VPN in China for our server [OT?]

Sendmail timout errors

I have 2 Centos servers that are currently giving me grief, I am getting the error:- SYSERR(root): timeout writing message to mail.server.co.uk Resource temporarily unavailable This is on both servers 1 is Centos 4.x & the second is:- sendmail-8.12.11-4.RHEL3.6 sendmail-cf-8.12.11-4.RHEL3.6 sendmail-devel-8.12.11-4.RHEL3.6 Any clues ? Two Instances of Apache; Primary IP / Secondary IP

Tried the apache group, and no response. Thought I'd try here. I have set up a development environment so that it mimics a production environment. The production environment has a proxy server (apache 2.x) that sends requests onto another back-end apache server, and of course the proxy server serves up pages sent by the back-end. All that works fine. However, in my development environment, I thought that I'd set up a separate instance of apache on the same server, and add a secondary IP address on the same interface. The proxy apache instance listens on the secondary IP, and the back-end instance listens on the primary IP. When I send a client request to the proxy, I get a blank page. When I check the logs, the back-end shows requests coming from the primary IP, and not the secondary IP. My conclusion is that the proxy is sending its outbound traffic on the primary IP address, not the secondary IP address it's listening on. That in turn means that back-end is sending its pages back on the primary IP instead of the secondary, and that means the proxy instance isn't receiving answers to its request. I know that BIND can be configured to send requests on secondary IP addresses. Can Apache? Is there something I can do with routing tables that can help? === Al

Up2date

Hi all, I want to use UP2DATE to alert me to updates that are available but still use yum to make the update. Up2date alerts me and i see what is available and then update with yum. Up2date icon still shows updates are available. How can I get up2date to know that the system has been updated? Thank you. -- Regards Robert Smile... it increases your face value! Problem installing the 53.1.6 kernel

On top of my previously (just now) difficulties with yum, now I find that the 53.1.6 kernel is not installing properly. Rpm also thinks it is installed. I can remove it with rpm -e, but then rpm -ivh won't install it either. It also hangs, at the same point. Here's what I see when I type ^C: error: %post(kernel-2.6.18-53.1.6.el5.x86_64) scriptlet failed, signal 2 (Yes, I know, signal 2 is SIGINT, which is what ^C does.) BUT rpm thinks it has installed the kernel even though the /boot partition has not been updated and the grub.conf file also does not show it. Any constructive assistance would be appreciated. mhr

daytime service on port 13

Hi all, One of the centos 5.1 servers was scanned by a customer and he suggests turning off daytime on port 13. When I look at /etc/xinetd.d/daytime* the 2 files say disabled yes So is there something else I should be looking at ? Thanks, Jerry

Unable to log out normally

I've posted this question to the Gnome users list, but so far no luck, so I thought I'd mention this here. A little while ago, I noticed that I was no longer able to log out from my GDM. I'm running the default GDM (2.16) that comes with CentOS, and this problem started up right about the same time that I updated to the 53.1.4 kernel (from the 8.1.15 version). As I've posted here recent;y, I was unable to use yum to install the 53.1.6 kernel until I rebooted to the 53.1.4 default kernel (I run a modified kernel that has NTFS support built in as a module with read/write support.) However, I was not only unable to log out using the System->LogOut applet, I was also unable to shut down or reboot using the System->Shutdown applet. This has also occurred since rebooting to the 53.1.6 stock kernel and my own 53.1.6 kernel with NTFS. What happens is that I either click on the Log Out or Shutdown applet, and if I click on the relevant button (Log Out, Shutdown or Reboot), the applet freezes. I can't cancel it or change options (in the case of the shutdown applet), but if I click on the close window button (upper right hand corner), after a moment or two, the "not responding" window pops up and I can kill the applet. (Thsi also happens if I just let the applet time out - it freezes then, too.) The only way I have been able to log out is to kill my gnome-session. To reboot, I can run "reboot" in a terminal window, or log out (by killing the gnome session) and then click on the "Reboot" link at the bottom of the login screen. I confess that I have downloaded and installed a few third-party packages, but I got most of them via rpmforge, CentOS (Fedora) Extras and SourceForge. The only thing that I find really suspicious in all of these is that I tried to install k9copy and it refused to install due to too many missing parts, but I did manage to install a number of KDE pieces - could they be interfering? Also, IIRC, the problem began before that, so I'm in a quandary here. Part of the problem is that I rarely log out, so I'm not 100% sure of exactly when this started or what I last installed that might have triggered it. (BTW, how do I view that?) Suggestions? Wisdom? Not too abrasive, please.... :-) Thanks. mhr

Timing a command

I want to keep track of how long a task is running. Thinking it wouldn't take that long, I opted not to run time before it. The fact that it is taking a long time, if I revisit the machine in the morning, what would be the best way to find out what time it ended? In this case, I'm using mt to erase an lto3 tape - sudo mt -f /dev/st0 erase. But I'd like to use the knowledge from this question to track other events, too. I feel like I should know this answer, but cannot think of the solution at the moment. Thanks. Scott

Auth/Security tool at first boot
