Upgrading my local repo to 5.2

This will be the first version change with my local repo so I want to check the steps out. I have a /Centos/5.1 directory with all the contents of the ISO CDs. I have a /Centos/5 directory with a symbolic link to the 5.1 directory. I ASSUME that I will create a /Centos/5.2 directory and drop the contents of the ISO images there. Then change the symbolic link to the 5.2 directory. After I test out both installs and upgrades from this new directory I can trash the old 5.1 directory. Do I have it right?

Why CentOS 5.2 is so large?

Hi, folks. I have download the DVD image of CentOS 5.2. Comparing with the DVD image of Upstream OS Provider, I got a surprise: The size of the DVD image of Upstream OS Provider is just 2.87 GB(i386), but the size of the DVD image of CentOS 5.2(i386) is so large that is 3.74 GB! I kown that CentOS's developers did very excellent work on how to make the Upstream OS more availability and add many good free software on the CentOS. But where can I got the change or add list of CentOS? and why the size change is so large? I think it is very useful for my farther employ of CentOS. Thanks! (Yes, I can read the ReleaseNotes, but it is still can not disabuse me, the secsion of "5.6. Packages added by CentOS that are not included upstream" is so little.)

backup question

Dear CentOs users, I have a centos server with nothing important at the moment, but I would like to install some web-based project management tool (trac for the curious) that would contain important data. And, as my network is growing the configuration of the server is becoming complex. I would like to have a proper backup so that I can restore the whole system easily, should any problem occur. What do you recommend? I'm not an expert on this, so my first idea is that I could do a per application backup and create a tar file of the /etc. The latter especially could be too naive. And, a push-the-button method that handles all in once, not depending on the app number would be much better. Another thing: how I could do this to be safe across a centos upgrade? - Gergely

Bonding question - active-backup

Hi I have bonding working and i can failover between active (eth0) and backup (eth1) without issue, however is there a way to automatically fail back to eth0 when this link once again becomes available? I understand this may be undesirable due to flapping etc but i just wonder if its possible. thanks

Network FS w/o user setup

Is there a file system + configuration that will let me share a directory, and anyone who has access to something in that directory on the server will also have access (and lack of access) to the same files from the client? Clients will be Centos5, Win2K, WinXP. Server is Centos5. To put it another way, all users have accounts on the server. I don't want to have to set up ANY user information on the server, other than what I set up to control local access. I just want to say "Share /vmware" and have it available, to the same users who can access it locally. With Samba I have to maintain duplicate user lists, password lists, and share access lists. I have not been able to find a clear instructions on how NFS4 handles this, but what I found didn't seem any better than Samba. I don't mind implementing ACLs on the server if it will do what I need, but I can't find anything that says it will save me any work either. Looking for a better way, Ted Miller Indiana, USA

Mounting Floppies

Hi - daft one for Friday morning coffee break: I have been trying to mount floppies on a couple of CentOS5 servers - the usual "mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy" (yes, /mnt/floppy exists!). On both servers, the mount command just doesn't come back and I have to hit CTRL-C. I have tried different media and also changed the floppy drive on one server, /dev/fd0 is seen as present on both servers and they are enabled in the BIOS. I have formatted and tested the floppies on my desktop PC without problems. In the end, I gave up, stuck a USB floppy on one of the boxes and it mounted with no problems. So is it me, CentOS 5 or something else? (Ideas, anyone!?). It could be a set of duff floppies and three flaky drives (two brand new), but I thought I'd ask before I spend too much more time on it! Awk help

I have csvde dump from active directory I process on my postfix mta. It takes output like this: "CN=Curtis xxx,OU=Domain Users,OU=xxx xxx,DC=xxx-xxx,DC=local",X400:c=US\;a= \;p=xxx xxx xxx\;o=Exchange\;s=xxx\;g=xxx\;;SMTP:Cxxx@xxx-xxx.com and should return a relay_recipient map in the form of: Cxxx(a)xxx-xxx.com OK The command I am using is: cat $1 | tr -d \" | tr , \\n| tr \; \\n | awk -F\: '/(SMTP|smtp):/ {printf("%s\tOK\n",$2)}' Everything up to the awk is working, it drops the smtp: but its putting OK's all over the darn place. Anyone familiar enough with awk and printf that can suggest why this happens? Thanks! jlc

CentOS tools for public safety

Any suggestions in this area would be greatly appreciate. I just recently found out at Sahana, and if there is anything else along those lines, I'd be very grateful.

3ware 9650 issues

I've been having no end of issues with a 3ware 9650SE-24M8 in a server that's coming on a year old. I've got 24 WDC WD5001ABYS drives (500GB) hooked to it, running as a single RAID6 w/ a hot spare. These issues boil down to the card periodically throwing errors like the following: sd 1:0:0:0: WARNING: (0x06:0x002C): Command (0x8a) timed out, resetting card. Usually when this happens, it's followed by: 3w-9xxx: scsi1: AEN: INFO (0x04:0x005E): Cache synchronization completed:unit=0. On the less pleasant occasions, it's followed by: scsi1: ERROR: (0x06:0x0036): Response queue (large) empty failed during reset sequence. 3w-9xxx: scsi1: ERROR: (0x06:0x002B): Controller reset failed during scsi host reset. sd 1:0:0:0: scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery This of course leads to a several hour downtime as the system has to be powered down (not just rebooted) and then the volume needs to be fscked. I've been back and forth with both the vendor and (via the vendor) 3ware with this. The card has been replaced, as well as the whole system. I'm running the latest firmware and drivers from 3ware. Have other folks had good luck with this card? What sorts of configs are you running? I'm in the position of needing more storage, and I'm a bit gun shy on 3ware at the moment... -- Joshua Baker-LePain QB3 Shared Cluster Sysadmin UCSF

/usr/bin/wc: cannot execute binary file

Hi all I've just installed CentOS 5.1 X64 as a VM in a CentOS 5.1 XEN server, and when I try todo something, I get this error /usr/bin/wc: cannot execute binary file Has anyone seen this before?
