"limit -n XXX" does NOT allow on CENTOS 4.X???

Conflicting perl packages?

How do I troubleshoot these restarts? I suspected hardware failure (power supply, cooling fans, etc.) but somehow the restarts happen way too periodically, so I have second thoughts on software as well. CentOS 5.3, fully updated. Btw, I don't have physical access to the machine until September, so diagnosing hardware is pretty limited atm. Only remote ssh available. I would really appreciate any advice on this! modern motherboard for centos-5

I'm considering upgrading, and am trying to choose a modern motherboard that nevertheless fully works with Centos5/RHEL5. Though I'm partial to AMD processors, and would like to use one in my new configuration, that's not a requirement, if the most appropriate board happens to be intel-compatible. However, given the way ASUS is dumping LInux and crawling more firmly into bed with the Beast, I'd prefer to avoid ASUS boards. I see that NewEgg has some combo deals at reasonable prices, but I can't tell which chipsets/boards are known to work with centos5 and which aren't. Just at random, here's one of their offerings, a Biostar board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138143 I've always understood Biostar boards to be cheap, not only in price, but perhaps they're serviceable? I'm open to other suggestions, too. Custom udev rules to override defaults?

I'm trying to work out how to set up a custom udev rule to override permissions on serial ports (/dev/ttyS* and /dev/ttyUSB*) on CentOS 5.3 The default rule, in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules has the line: KERNEL=="tty[A-Z]*", NAME="%k", GROUP="uucp", MODE="0660" and I would like the mode to be 0666 Various docs on web say that you shouldn't change 50-udev.rules, but instead create a new rule file that appears lexically before that rule - so I've created a file that contains the line: KERNEL=="tty[A-Z]*", NAME="%k", GROUP="uucp", MODE="0666" called 10-local.rules However, this doesn't work ... the /dev/ttyS* device files get the 'default' owner/group/perms (mode = '0600', uid = '0', gid = '0') If I rename the 10-local.rules to say 99-local.rules, then the device files get the owner/group/perms from 50-udev.rules (mode = '0660', uid = '0', gid = '14') I can get the mode set to 0666 by editing 50-udev.rules, however this seems wrong as you should be able to override the defaults without doing this. We have CENTOS 4.7 on DELL server. We need change following 3 files: /etc/security/limits.conf /etc/pam.d/sshd /etc/pam.d/su Does there has way reload it without reboot server? no more single cd installs?

for some reason cent 5 now wants cd 3 as well as 1. I make sure to uncheck everything and instlal only the base system. Bad iso or new default? Sincerely, William Warren

How to change Disk sequence on DELL R900 CENTOS 5.3?

we have DELL R900 with CENTOS 5.3 in it. This DELL R900 come with one integrate PERC6/I and two PERC6/E card. DELL 6/I control 5 internal disks. The original disk sequence are: /dev/sda1 /boot /dev/sda2 / /dev/sdb1 swap ... after I configured PERC6/E disks and reboot, /dev/sda change to RAID disk and original /boot and / change to /dev/sde1 and /dev/sde2. My modprobe.conf is: alias scsi_hostadapter megaraid_sas alias scsi_hostadapter1 ata_piix alias eth0 bnx2 alias eth0.1998 bnx2 alias eth1 bnx2 how to change sequence back?
