LDAP/Autofs instructions are conflicting in Centos5.3

Hi, I'm not sure if I am posting this in the right place, so if this belongs more on another list, please let me know. I am trying to get Autofs configured to use LDAP on CentOS5.3, but am running into an inconsitency. On CentOS5.3, the openldap server is installed with an extra schema/redhat/autofs.schema file. From what I can tell, that schema file seems to follow RFC2307bis. In the schema, it uses cn and ou. However, in all docs I can find for RHEL5, everything indicates that I should be using automountMapName and automountKey as the Map attribute and the Entry Attribute. I am very confused. Which is the "right" one to use? If I follow the RHEL docs and tell autofs to use MAP_ATTRIBUTE as automountMapName, then I can't use the schema that is distributed with CentOS5.3. Should I be using the schema that is distributed with the CentOS openLdap package, or is there another one that I should be using instead? Thanks, Eric

Looking for recommendations for blocking hacking attempts

Hello: I have been looking into projects that will automatically restrict hacking attempts on my servers running CentOS 5. I think the two top contenders are: DenyHosts - http://denyhosts.sourceforge.net Fail2ban - http://www.fail2ban.org >From what I see, DenyHosts only blocks based on failed SSH attempts whereas Fail2ban blocks failed attempts for other access as well. The main benefit I see from DenyHosts is their synchronization service where my servers can proactively block hosts recognized by other users of their service. Does anyone have experience with these tools and have recommendations? yum-3.2.8 for Centos 4 backport, part II.

Hi, I have again worked on yum 3.2.8 for Centos 4 today, after a long time. The result is backported package yum-3.2.8-9.el4.hrb.2.1.5 which is the upgrade of yum-3.2.8-9.el4.hrb.2.1.3 I've been using smoothly for quite a long time. Packages are in testing repos: http://fs12.vsb.cz/hrb33/el4/hrb/testing/i386/repodata/ http://fs12.vsb.cz/hrb33/el4/hrb/testing/x86_64/repodata/ I'd like to ask for QA tests. This patched version passes all the internal yum tests (aka 'make test'). Regards, David Hrbáč

Add instantly active local user accounts *with* password using useradd -p option ?

Hi, I need to setup a load of user accounts on a series of machines, for testing purposes. I'm using a script to do this, but the only problem I have so far: I have to activate them all manually by doing passwd user1, passwd user2, passwd user3, etcetera. The useradd man page mentions a -p option to define a password, but I can't seem to get this to work. Here's what I'd like to be able to do: # useradd -c "Gaston Lagaffe" -p abc123 -m glagaffe And put that line in a script, so the account is *instantly* activated. I tried it, but to no avail. Looks like there's some burning loop I have to jump through first :o) No security considerations here for the moment, since it's for testing. Any idea how this works? Niki

Window Server 2003 will not run as paravirtualized?

Hello: According to the Red Hat Virtualization Guide, Windows Server 2003 32-bit will only run as a fully virtualized guest on an AMD64 system. I thought I have seen a lot of discussion about running paravirtualized Windows on CentOS. Is that a bad idea?
