Replicate desktop configuration for other users using /etc/skel

Hi, The subject says it all. I'd like to copy my own custom desktop configuration for other users on the machine without having to go manually through the hassle. Here's a non-exhaustive list of what I usually tweak : * Theme + icons * background image * panel * screensaver * Nautilus behaviour * Handling of removable devices * Gnome Terminal * Gnome Dictionary (french servers) * GEdit options And so on... I used to do this before, a few years ago, when I was a Slackware user, but only with KDE (or XFCE on older hardware). Usually it boiled down to copy the relevant hidden directory trees (.kde/ or .config) to /etc/skel before creating new users. Would something similar work with GNOME? And if so, what are the relevant hidden configuration directories to copy over? Cheers, Niki

new RAID5 array: 3x500GB with XFS

Hello all, I have yesterday after some typos, sent my ext3 RAID5 array to the void... I want to recreate it now, but I read on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Disk_Optimization that you can optimize the filesystem on top of the RAID. Will this wiki article be exactly the same for XFS? Is it worth the trouble to also create an LVM volume on the RAID array? Regards, Coert

Remote identity management

Hi, Until now, I've only managed local user management on small network with no more than five or six machines, e. g. all user data stored locally on each and every machine (/etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, /etc/group). Now I'd like to learn remote identity management, that is, all user data stored centrally on one machine (so I don't have to wonder who has which UID and GID when I want to setup an NFS share, for example). I understand there are several ways to achieve that with RHEL/CentOS: NIS, LDAP, Kerberos, SMB, ... The networks I'll have to deal with are 100% GNU/Linux (better: 100% CentOS). So my first question is: which solution is the "best" for such a configuration ? By "best" I mean some compromise between "easy" and "reliable". Any suggestions ? Niki Kovacs

It is not working. IMHO, since you (like me) have both rpmforge and epel configured, you should give epel a very low priority or epel will replace a *LOT* of the packages on your box. Also, I suggest you disable the protecbase plug in. Priorities is newer and more powerful.
