CentOS 5.5: what do /etc/sysconfig/networking and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts exactly ?

Hi, on our cluster we have 5 network interfaces. I was surprised to discover that the ifcfd-* files under /etc/sysconfig/networking and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts were not the same. So I have searched a little bit, but I'm now confused: - the files under /etc/sysconfig/networking come from system-config-network. - the files under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts are read by the /etc/init.d/network script and used to set up the network interfaces. - I don't find where the files under /etc/sysconfig/networking are used. - Does system-config-network modify the file under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts too ? Is there someone who can enlightenment me ? Thx in advance, Best regards, Guillaume

DNS update system-config-network GUI

Box is fully updated CentOS 5.5 (32 bit). DHCP is from the ADSL modem 192.168.1.1. After I update the DNS settings and restart the network, the DNS changes do not hold. I have tried using this GUI, as a regular user, after giving the root password, and, also, logged in as the root user. When I begin, the Primary DNS is shown as 192.168.1.1 the IP of the ADSL modem. I move that IP to the Tertiary DNS and insert the Primary and Secondary DNS IP's I want to use. Then, I save the file, quit, and restart the network (service network restart). I see messages that the file has been saved and suggesting that I restart the network or the box. The DNS I want to use is that of OpenDNS.com and I saw it work, briefly.Then,it stops working and when I launch the system-config-network GUI again, I see it has reverted to the original configuration, with only the Primary DNS of 192.168.1.1 (the ADSL modem) shown. Questions: The "DNS Search Path" is blank. Is there something I should insert there? If it appears that I am using the system-config-network GUI properly, what configuration file can I modify, to make these DNS changes hold permanently? TIA! Lanny http://www.magazines-magazine.com/

slow network throughput, how to improve?

would like some input on this one please. Two CentOS 5.5 XEN servers, with 1GB NIC's, connected to a 1GB switch transfer files to each other at about 30MB/s between each other. Both servers have the following setup: CentOS 5.5 x64 XEN 1GB NIC's 7200rpm SATA HDD's The hardware configuration can't change, I need to use these servers as they are. They are both used in production with a few xen domU's virtual machines running on them. I want to connect them both to a SAN, with gigabit connectivity and would like to know how I can increase network performance a bit, as is. The upstream datacentre only supplies 100MB network connection, so in the internet side of it isn't much of a problem. Router for SOHO network - hardware considerations

Hi, Last week I finished installing a small network in a private school : one server (an old IBM X225), seventeen desktops (Fujitsu Siemens PIV 2.4 GHZ, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HD), all running CentOS 5.5. One extra machine is acting as a router, in that it is installed between the DSL modem and the network, with two Ethernet cards, and it's taking care of DHCP, DNS, NTP and also acts like a proxy (with Squid). It seems quite big and noisy and electricity-consuming to me, so I wonder if there is any small device that could possibly do the job as good, but which would me more adapted : small, solid and cheap (if possible). I imagine some tiny box just with a CPU and a small harddisk, a little RAM and two network interfaces (one out, one in), where I could install a very stripped-down CentOS, and then just forget about it. So far, I've googled a bit, and I've found two things: 1) Pyramid Soekris boards, where I can put something like Pyramid Linux on it. And 2) The Linksys WRT54GL, for which there are Linux firmwares like OpenWRT and DD-WRT. Is there anything you could especially recommend for this job? (I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty, BTW :oD) Cheers, Niki

Boot failure after install on IBM x3550 M3

I'm trying to install CentOS 5.5 on a couple of servers of type IBM System x3550 M3, but it's not going too well. Actually, the install setup phase runs as expected, and the actual installation also appears to be successful, but the system will not boot - I just get a message (presumably) from BIOS saying that boot from hard disk 0. If I start the installer again after this, or boot rescue mode off the install DVD, the installation is correctly found, however. Does anyone have any idea what may cause this and/or how I can fix the problem? Or is there at least anyone out there who has tried CentOS on the same type of hardware? Note that I've tried (re)installing several times, and also tested CentOS 5.4, but the result is always the same. I've also used CentOS without any problems on an x3550 M2, i.e. a slightly older variant of the hardware. DisplayPort output with intel graphics driver?

Hi. We've installed CentOS 5.5 on a "mini PC" with an onboard Intel graphics chip, which has both "VGA" and DisplayPort output. This works reasonably well, except that I'd like to connect the monitor to the DisplayPort, and I only seem to get a signal on the VGA connector. This is the case even if I boot with the DisplayPort (only) connected, in which case console output during boot goes to the DisplayPort, but the graphical output does not. On the other hand, . DisplayPort display did work when booting from a "live" Ubuntu CD. Is there anything I can do to get the correct display setup? Note that the driver used is "intel", not "i810".
