Logwatch, cron, and dovecot

Howdy all, Question for anyone. I have centos 5.x on my server. Everyday I get a logwatch sent to my mailbox. I usually check every couple weeks and this time I got a surprise... Up until may 15th, the watch started with cron begin/ cron end and then went to http begin/end.... May 16th had the selinux (which I have disabled) and dovecot listings above the http begin. Cron was absent. Everyday after that is is all dovecot first, no cron. I never had dovecot show up in my logwatch before. So, I assume some update did something, but it was obviously 2 weeks ago or so. I have an auto update, so I am thinking it happened with a yum update. The selinux only happened that one time...not shown up since. I am concerned about the cron begin/end no longer being there, don't know why dovecot was not there to begin with.... Just did a reboot and will see what happens tomorrow... pup problem

Hello! On May 28, I had a problem with pup and seamonkey. I was doing an update via pup and reading a page via seamonkey; seamonkey froze with a plain brown screen. I waited awhile, and then did the press-the-power-button-until-it-shuts-off. However, I don't know whether it was seamonkey or pup that actually caused the freeze, but apparently pup did not do its updating job correctly. There's a number of icons that are missing, so (for example) open office won't start from the menu. Centos starts, but the desktop background doesn't appear (although I can select desktop background and get it to appear). Finally, attempts to attach anything to an email via seamonkey (17 or 2.04) or thunderbird show the requestor momentarily and then crashes seamonkey/thunderbird. Is there a log somewhere of what was updated (I didn't see it in /var/log/messages) and can I force pup to do the update manually? Any other suggestions for getting things back to normal? Can't print a pdf?

I just had a strange occurrence. I was printing out some PDFs and I pulled one down off the web (my wireless bill) and tried to print page 1. My browser properly fired up AR9, but nothing printed. I tried agian, still nothing. I saved the file, opened it with the Document Viewer and it can't print the file either. I tried opening it with GIMP, and it gets this error: Opening '/home/mhr/Documents/pdfs/vzwA0418.pdf' failed: Plug-in could not open image I couldn't find any related data in the logs (spooler logs are all empty, nothing in dmesg). I tried disabling and enabling the printer, then turning it off and on to no effect (which is not too surprising). Anyone have a clue where I should look or what to do? Thanks. mhr

24G running on centos 5 desktop.

Hi All, Thought I would let those that are interested know that I had success in running 24G on an Asus P6T with 24G kit of Kingston DDR3. While I was putting this together I saw lots of forum posts asking if anyone had tried it. Well we did here at our work and all looks great including running "memtest86" overnight. I have a fluid dynamics simulation running on it with 90% memory usage and all looks great. bogus bond0 device showing up in /proc/net/dev

I'm running into a situation where a bogus bonded interface named "bond0" is being created, in addition to the desired "bond2" interface. Can anyone confirm this? Anyone know why it's happening or what I do to get rid of it? I wanted to start my numbering scheme at 2 instead of 0, which I didn't think would be a problem. how to install ip6tables?

Hi all, I'm sorry if this is a quick dumb one, but how does one install ip6tables? Running yum install ip6tables doesn't return anything, even with the rpmforge repository enabled: root@mercury:[~]$ yum install -y ip6tables Loaded plugins: fastestmirror Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile * addons: mirrors.netdna.com * base: pubmirrors.reflected.net * extras: mirror.vcu.edu * rpmforge: fr2.rpmfind.net * updates: ftp.lug.udel.edu Excluding Packages in global exclude list Finished Setting up Install Process No package ip6tables available. Nothing to do Doing a google search for "how to install ip6tables", ironically, returns results on how to disable it. I have disabled it previously, but now want to re-enabled it as I want to play around with IPV6 & iptables. ATI Proprietary Drivers LAG

I've installed CentOS 5.5, fixed my problems with my network card driver, and and I've followed this: http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/HardwareList/AtiDriver , downladed latest ati driver, restarted, screen resolution is fixed, but everything lags. Thin client system for X applications?

We're looking for what, years ago, I'd describe a s a X terminal -- something small, simple (and ideally cheap) that a user could display X applications on. I guess they're now called thin clients, but they now seem geared as seats on the web, and for this application we would need to be able display the results of running a homebrewed X application from a CentOS system, either through xdm, or ssh with X forwarding, or vnc. Running CentOS too on the thin client would be nice, but not a requirement. The HP t5545 looks right for size and price, but I can't tell if it could support displaying arbitrary X apps.

Shutdown/poweroff does not power off machine

I've got a Dell Optiplex GX240 I am running CentOS 5.4 (kernel 2.6.18-164.9.1.el5.centos.plus)... When I had Fedora 11 and 12 on it, I could issue a poweroff command and the machine would power itself off. However, under CentOS it doesn't turn the machine off whatsoever. When it completes, the machine is still running with a message of "system halted." Then I have to physically hit the power button to turn it off... I believe at some point I did try to issue a shutdown command - but had the same results... Anyone have any recommendations or suggestions? Thanks ahead of time :) Scot P.
