Is every CentOS release supported for 7 years?

Hi, I've read some posts in the forums which seems to indicate that not every CentOS version is well supported. Is it possible to install CentOS 5.5 on a server and only apply security updates for 7 years? Or is the preferred way to upgrade to each minor version? Thanks in advance! 194 Kernel Panic; 164 is Fine; How Do I Debug?

I have a machine that has worked fine for years on CentOS5. kernel-PAE-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 is the last "works fine" kernel, but kernel-PAE-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 crashes at boot every time. I tried banging on the side of the monitor to no avail. Package Distribution Server?

Dear List, I'm trying to set up a lab with multiple workstations running CentOS 5. Does anybody knows how to keep the packages in sync among workstations? Ideally I want any change made on any machine be able to applied to all other machines. Alternatively, to "push" the changes (add and/or remove packages) from one central server to all other machine is also fine. Thanks Zhihao Lou P.S.: Sorry for the confusion subject line. I really don't know what's the accurate name for the feature I described here.

rsyslog-relp - CentOS 5.5

Hi We have been using rsyslog and rsyslog-relp for a while however it seems that in 5.5 there is a newer version of rsyslog. Does anyone know of a repo where rsyslog-relp exists that is compatible with rsyslog from 5.5 ? thanks

GRUB, and how do I loathe thee

I just adore the install. Esp. of GRUB. Does *anyone* who works on GRUB actually work in the real world, and not only on brand new machines? I just had happen at work what happened last fall on my home system: then, I had /dev/hda, and was trying a clean install on a new SATA drive; right now, I'm installing on a replacement disk on a server that has no CD/DVD drive from a USB key. My options: on my home system, it was MRR on /dev/hda (which was being replaced, and was to become my backup drive), and here, in the MBR of the USB key; in both cases, *only* in the first sector of a partition on the new drive. I am NEVER OFFERED THE OPTION of the MBR of the drive I'm installing to. *snarl* mark "no grub, then linux rescue, then chcon, then grub install... I hope"

OT: SysAdmin Stories

Hello, I'm compiling a collection of stories from the systems administrator trenches. They can be short or long, funny or about a particularly challenging problem or period, or even something that appeared very technically challenging and ended up being something very simple. Stories which are more political would be ok so long as they do not have an agenda or can be interpreted as a public attack. I can't promise money but I can promise 15 minutes of fame. The stories will be accumulated over the next few months and go into a book about real world experiences of Systems Administrators and Systems Engineers. Some of the material may be used in our training classes, as well. All stories will be duly credited and I'll even buy a beer (or other non-alcoholic beverage) for anyone I ever meet in person. Stories may be edited for grammar or clarity. This book is still in the proposal stage so there is no firm target date, yet. If for some reason the book is not published (just like tech projects, books are sometimes cancelled at the last minute) they will go up on our website. help with sendmail closing relay

I have centos 4.8 i686. It has stock sendmail. see file below. I am getting reports that it is an open relay. I have searched all around and it seems like it should be closed. redundant ldap - client config

Hi all, I have a few ldap servers slaved to a primary via syncrepl, all is well. I've set my clients to auth against a few and there /etc/ldap.conf looks like so; uri ldap://primary.domain.com ldap://secondary.domain.com However when either primary or slaves go down, while the clients can log in, access is very slow, ls of any dir is painful. The /var/log/messages shows several failed attempts to conect to the slaves ldap servers. Whats the proper way to set up redundant ldap on the clients?
