Service monitoring/"Monit"?

Has anybody here tried the "Monit" utility (http://mmonit.com/monit/)? I need to set up some kind of "watchdog" functionality for a custom service otherwise started via init (i.e. via a script in /etc/init.d + rc*.d links managed by chkconfig) and it seems like this system may give me nearly what I want. However, something that concerns me about it, is that it appears to take full ownership of the services it monitors, and pretty much bypass the init system, in that once I've told monit to watch a process, it makes not difference if the associated service is enabled or not (via "chkconfig") , and there is no good way to fully stop the service, besides removing the Monit config or disabling Monit itself. (Or maybe I can use special "monit" commands, too, but that means precisely that Monit "owns" the service, which I somehow don't quite like.) What I'd really like, is to have my process watched and restarted if it goes a way, but only if it had already been started via "init" or through the "service" command, or possibly direct execution of the "init.d" script. This also means it should be restarted if it crashes or if is stopped via a direct "kill", but not after "service <name> stop" or similar. Which might mean it all boils down to checking if, and only if, the pid file for the service already exists. (Does that make any sense?) So, does anyone know if there is a way to convince Monit to do this for me? Or alternatively, is there a different tool that might do the job? DHCP/DNS server for LAN with mainly Windows clients : Outlook Express vs. Webmail problem

Hi, I recently setup a CentOS 5 file server for a small LAN consisting of 15 Windows XP clients. The LAN is eventually expected to migrate to Linux, at least some of the client machines. The previous setup made by a local Windows-only computer firm was an unhealthy mix of static and dynamic IP addresses with conflicting adresses, etc. First thing I undertook was clean up this mess by setting up a DHCP + local cache DNS server on the Linux machine. Now the curious problem I have: IP addresses are attributed correctly, people can surf on the internet all right. But the only thing they can't seem to do is send mail with Outlook or Outlook Express. I have to revert to the ISP's DNS, but so I lose the benefit of local DNS. And I don't have the slightest clue as to why that is so. operation on the client is slow when openldap servers are down

md0 and moving to another system

Hi all, I thought to have tested this a while ago but I guess not. I have a Centos 5.3 system (call its SYSA) software raid 0, 2 disks. I have an identical system (SYSB) else were, so I pull one of my mirrors drives from SYSA and put it in SYSB as the only drive in SYSB. Upon but I get grub error. I boot in recuse mode (CD, linux rescue) and it attempts to mount the disk, but claims no partitions exists. I drop into a shell and mount it w/o issues. Running fdisk on the drive tells me its got 2 partitions which is true. I set this up as ext3, no LVMs, etc... with root and the other partition being swap. I've always thought that all I can do in the event of motherboard failure os to have a duplicate system around and merely move a dive off to it. - aurf

Kickstart issue: 'dialog' doesn't work in %post, CentOS 5.5

Hi, all. I'm trying to customize a CentOS installation cd, but got trouble with kickstart. I want to use dialog[1] for command line based user interface, but it can't display correctly in kickstart with CentOS 5.5. Same ks file works with CentOS 5.3 (both i386 and x86_64). What's the different between CentOS 5.3/5.5? I can't find it in release notes. And how can i fix it? Openwebmail dependency problem

Ok, I have to ask. I tried to yum install the latest openwebmail (from the openwebmail repo), and got a transaction check error about a conflict with some packages which are needed by amavisd and spamassassin (packages originating from rpmforge, I think). yum in CentOS 3.9

I need to support 3.9 for another while and thought I would set up a local repo with base and updates merged into one. How can I update repodata? Intel ICH10R on CentOS 5.4

Hey there.. I was wondering if anyone could share experiences they have had with the Intel ICH10R SATA controller? I tried looking around but all I could find were RAID references, I have no interest in using the RAID functionality just basic SATA JBOD. Wondering if there are any gotchas for performance, drivers, quality etc. I normally don't touch anything that is not hardware RAID though this is a special project.. And even if I get demo gear I won't have enough time to put it through real paces(likely need weeks) before a decision needs to be made. I don't see anything that is causing alarm but just curious if anyone else has experiences. thanks nate

PXE boot into rescue mode

Booting into a shell and skipping init
