libv4l question

Hi all, Hey I'm trying to do some web cam stuff, and I found this link: http://freshmeat.net/projects/libv4l/releases/333037 I was doing the "rpm -qa | grep v4l" and nothing comes up, I did "ls path_to_centos/RPMS/* | grep v4l " and nothing comes up, I did 'yum provides "*/libv4l*"' and nothing comes up. Is the CentOS library for v4l named something different? Is this library something I can just grab and compile and "help" with my v4l efforts? Do I not need this library at all? I'm using 5.6 x86_64. Just a little confused at the moment. Thanks, Jerry

Latest kernel produces kernel error on Dell R200 on boot-up

I accidentally noticed this error written to the warn log on my Dell R200's when the machines booted up after latest kernel update. Google doesn't have this exact error, only a few with differently named devices, but all seem to have to do with USB. Could this be a bug? Didn't see this error on other machines with more than one USB port, though. HP Network Printer

I'm attempting to install and configure HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) software on my CentOS 5.3 x86_64 system without success. I've got a HP Officejet Pro 8500 multi-function printer connected via ethernet. I'm getting a message saying that it cannot locate the libcups module in the /usr/lib64 and /usr/lib directories. However, I can locate then correct modules using the find command. I can print to this printer using multiple versions of Fedora and multiple versions of Windows. Does anyone have any suggestions why it is not working? Thanks, Gene Poole

I have just installed CentOS 5.6 from disk and updated it. 1. I would like to use telnet on my local network. How do I activate it? 2. How do I install Mercurial? it is not in the repository. 3. unofficial ext3 and ext4 compare

I have something like 300G I routinely backup. This includes some large 12Gig images and other files. I had been using ext3 on an external USB disk for part of the process. Under ext3 doing "rsync -a /home /mnt/external_back/backup.jun.27.2011" it took 200 minutes. I took the same computer, same external HD and reformatted it for ext4 (mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdd1). I then started the same rsync as above. The time was reduced to 170 minutes. This is on Centos 5.6 x86_64. I did notice the [ext4-dio-unwrit] process that starts up. One process for each core. I was concerned when they did not go away. But google says that is normal. :) Jerry

How many L1/L2 my cpu have ?

Hi Could anybody explain me how to check how many L1/L2 cache my cpu have. No USB 3.0 and audio sound with CentOS 5.6

Jumbo Frame performance or lackof?

After successfully getting higher MTU to work on my Realtek NICs, I started testing the impact of higher MTU on file transfers using NFS exported ramdisk to ramdisk. The results were unexpected. The higher the MTU on the sending NIC, the lower the file transfer speed. I tested by using time cp to copy a 1GB file (In case compression might affect the results, so I dd the test file from the CentOS DVD ISO) The average of 6 runs per MTU with varying MTU on the receiving NICs MTU 1500 = 116.34 MB/s MTU 3000 = 103.42 MB/s MTU 4000 = 102.52 MB/s I was actually planning to do 1500, 3000, 4500, 6000 and 7200. However, I was surprised to discover although I had two seemingly identical Realtek PCI-E nics, the sending NIC could only go up to 4K. I'm wondering, that since Jumbo Frames was supposed to be better for bulk transfers, why am I seeing these results? Is it the ElRepo drivers I used to enable higher MTUs or possibly some kind of oddity with the realtek NICs I am using? Or am I mistaken about the benefits of jumbo frames and that they are only beneficial in specific configurations, perhaps only with higher network speeds and enough packets at 1500 MTU to overwhelm packet handling hardware?
