CentOS4 desktop has stopped recognizing removable media - haldaemon problem?

USB sticks and cameras used to pop right up on my desktop. Now they don't. I've checked the Gnome "Drives and Media Preferences" and nothing has changed -- I have "Mount removable media when inserted" etc. (Tried toggling it off and back on, no effect.) I've logged out and back in, even rebooted. /var/log/messages shows the devices are being recognized by udev: Jun 27 19:53:37 torch kernel: Attached scsi removable disk sde at scsi11, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch scsi.agent[13576]: disk at /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0b.1/usb1/1-5/1-5:1.0/host11/target11:0:0/11:0:0:0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch udevd[1347]: udev done! Rebasing to 699 I restarted hald (service haldaemon restart) and it picked up one of the two devices I'd plugged in, but not the other.

Scientific Linux 6.0 released (based on RHEL 6.0)

I know this is the CentOS list. However, as there has been some interest in CentOS 6.0 (RHEL 6), I thought I'd share the news here. Scientific Linux 6 is based on RHEL 6 with add-ons for scientific computing. FWIW, the Admin tools etc. are pretty much the same as in RHEL, so are the base packages. Which version of the ixgbe driver is included in 5.6? I went through all the RHEL5 release notes, but they only ever state that the driver was updated, not which devices was added. ext4 in CentOS 5.6?

I'm sure many are running ext4 FS's in production, but just want to be re-assured that there are not currently any major issues before starting a new project that looks like it will be using ext4. I've previously been using xfs but the software for this project requires ext3/ext4. I'm always very cautious before jumping onto a new FS, (new in the sense it is officially supported now) Thanks in advance!

hi all, I hope you can help me with a strange quota/nfs/XFS behavior... I'm using Centos 5.6 on both a nfs server and client. Both are 64-bit, and using a recent kernel: NFS server: Linux fs2.priv 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue May 31 13:22:04 EDT 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux NFS client: Linux nx8.priv 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue May 31 13:22:04 EDT 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux The NFS server is exporting a XFS filesystem: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/vgXX-lvXX 24T 16T 8.2T 66% /export User foo (for anonymity) added ~3TB of data in the last 2-3 days. On the NFS server, her quota is reported as ~5.8 TB: Disk quotas for user foo (uid 1314): Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace /dev/mapper/vgXXX-lvXXX 6129681348 7490000000 0 6991914 0 0 On a NFS client, her quota is reported as ~1.8TB: Disk quotas for user foo (uid 1314): Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace fs2:/XXXXX 1831504512 3195032704 0 6988049 0 0 When I modify her quota on the NFS sever, it's not reflected on the NFS client. This problem is specific user foo. There are about 20 other users with quotas on this NFS server, and if I change one of their quotas, the quota/usage is correctly (and instantly) reflected on the NFS client. rpc.quotad is configured to use port 875, and I can see this is working with strace. And tcpdump shows an established connection: 16:50:04.480757 IP nx8.priv.pssc > fs2.priv.875: UDP, length 116 16:50:04.481015 IP fs2.priv.875 > nx8.priv.pssc: UDP, length 68 Any ideas? Thanks! mounting a CentOS 5.5-based NFS partitions from a Mac OS X machine

Hello listmates, Yes, I know - Macs and NFS do not co-exist easily. Still I've got to make this happen somehow. In short - we have two CentOS-based NFS servers. They work fine with a variety of Linux machines but when I try to mount them from a Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 machine I get nowhere. I.e., the Mac does not complain yet reads nothing over the NFS. Has anybody seen this? Does anybody know of a fix? Thanks. Boris.

Centos|Windows Cross Platform File Managers

Greetings all! Can anyone recommend a Midnight Commander like file manager that will run on Windows Vista please? I have downloaded and installed 2 MC's for Vista, but the actual MC user window running under Vista is very small compared to my screens real estate, and I cannot seem to make it fill half the screen. I have found Double Commander for Windows: http://doublecmd.sourceforge.net/ and installed that, and wondered if there is a version of Double Commander available for Centos please? Any decent File Manager that will run on Centos and Windows would be fine. That way I can easily switch between the two OSes as needed, and be comfortable using just one cross-platform file manager. Anyway to ensure SSH availability?

I was having problems with the same server locking up to the point I can't even get in via SSH. I've already used HTB/TC to reserve bandwidth for my SSH port but the problem now isn't an attack on the bandwidth. So I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to ensure that SSH is given cpu and i/o priority. However, so far reading seems to imply that it's probably not going to help if the issue is i/o related and/or it would require escalating SSH to such levels (above paging/filesystem processes) that makes it a really bad idea. Since I'm not the only person who face problems trying to remotely access a locked up server, surely somebody must had come up with a solution that didn't involve somebody/something hitting the power button?

yum update -> [Errno 4] Socket Error: timed out

Trying to update a second CentOS box, I'm getting this error repeatedly: [Errno 4] Socket Error: timed out I'm getting this on every mirror and have gone through the list of mirrors more than a dozen times. Oddly, the RPMs I'm trying to upgrade I upgraded just yesterday without a problem on another machine on the same LAN with no problems whatsoever. I can ping mirrors fine. There were a spate of these errors back in 2006. The fix for many was to add this line to yum.conf: timeout=300 So I did that on the machine where yum is having the problem, but the same errors are returned. Anyone else seeing this? Anyone know what the problem is?

Hi! I've a toshiba satellite notebook, and I tried to install centos 5.6. The installer starts, but when it turns to graphical mode, the backlight goes off. I see the windows, buttons, but it's very dark, maybe the backlight switching off.. How can I get the installer to work correctly? preventing symlinks?

This may be more of a general linux question but is there a simple way of preventing users from creating symlinks to or from certain directories? I have a /scratch dir that's a single 27TB volume and I don't want users linking their home dirs as there's a chance it will screw up our external backups. Is this a job for SELinux? Any ideas? Hello, I'm using CentOS release 5.5 x86_64 with the stock php-5.1.6-27.el5 and would like to redirect PHP messages into /var/log/httpd/php_log First I tried adding that file name to /etc/php.ini: error_log = "/var/log/httpd/php_log" and restarted httpd, but the file didn't appear. I've touched it and changed owner to apache.apache, but that didn't help. Then I've changed that line to error_log = syslog and now I get the messages in /var/log/messages: Jul 29 21:29:24 hXXX httpd: PHP Notice: Undefined index: REMOTE_ADDR in /var/www/html/odnoklassniki/index.php on line 44 Jul 29 21:29:45 hXXX httpd: PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '[' in /var/www/html/odnoklassniki/index.php on line 44 I still would like to move those message to a separate file though, so I've added the following line to /etc/syslog.conf and reloaded syslogd service: httpd.* /var/log/httpd/php_log but the file is still empty. Repo question

Not quite OT, I think. On one PC, I'm running Scientific Linux 6, and would like to add one or more additional repositories for yum a/o PackageKit to draw on. (In particular, at the moment, I can't seem to find an rpm for Pan that doesn't come up against dependency hell.) There don't seem to be any help/discussion lists such as this for SL, or I haven't found them. So I'm guessing that this is the nearest thing to one -- and also that, just maybe, a repo for CentOS would be the canonical first choice for my need. Hey, recently I experienced yum bugs on some servers... A simple 'yum update' gives me the yum usage... I noticed a difference between it and a simple 'yum': # yum udpate Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, priorities usage: yum [options] COMMAND # yum Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, priorities You need to give some command usage: yum [options] COMMAND Once, a 'yum clean all' helped and I could update once. But now, I tried several cleanups and I still get the usage... Anyone else experienced it? Thx, JD

OpenOffice 3.3.0 crashing on CentOS 5.5

The last few releases of OpenOffice have gotten very unstable on my desktop which is a CentOS 5.5 i386 system. After multiple crashes when doing embedded simple drawings in OpenOffice writer (circles and lines with connections), I started using the versions from Sun then Oracle. I am now using version 3.3: openooffice.org3-3.3.0-9567. I've lived with this but with version 3.x it has gotten really bad. Display info: depth 16-bit, Intel Boradwater-G Chipset 965Q Crashes I am experiencing now: Writer sometimes using 100% CPU and X is unresponsive. (I have to ssh to the workstation and kill Writer to recover.) Random crashes in Writer Writer crashes when moving circles or lines in simple drawings (mainly circles, lines, clipart, etc.) (insert -> object -> OLE object -> OO drawing)... crashes in Calc when adding text at the end of a line of text in a cell. Could this be a problem with some setting or with Java? Any help would be most appreciated, -- Wade Hampton
