No DVD Mirrors - Only Torrent

I love Centos. Have in on my data centre servers, my home servers, my laptop and my netbook. Yes there are serious and continuing security concerns relating to Gnome and KDE but they are not Centos. Currently running 5.6 and would like a two set DVD of that version. However none of the mirrors offer pure DVDs only Torrent versions which involve the possibility of bits being tampered with and things leaving my servers without explicit knowledge and authority. None of the CD / DVD sellers I have contacted can offer Centos 5.6 DVDs because, they say, they can't get a virgin 5.6 DVD only Torrent. FreeBSD 8.2 (the latest) offers a virgin 1 DVD download. The whole distribution is about 4 DVDs. Can Centos offer a virgin 1 DVD download of 5.6 for those of us who are unhappy about slow Torrent, the possibility of tampering and the traffic out of our machines ? BY THE WAY, a very BIG and GRATEFUL THANK YOU to the EXCELLENT TEAM that gave us the wonderful Centos 5.6. Very much appreciated and if KBS and the others ever venture out of Kent and London a bit northwards but south of Watford I would be delighted to buy him and the others several rounds of drinks. Chicken and egg question: passwd and cronjob

Hi all, Let's say I activate password expiration for every account (including root) for every 90 days. I understand that cronjob for root will fail when the password expires. The question is, if I setup a cronjob every 90 days to renew the root password like: echo diFficulT123 | passwd --stdin root will it work? I mean at second 1 on the 90th day, which will run first? - The cronjob to renew the password - Or the password expiration, thus preventing the cronjob from running. Pardon me if it's silly. I know it's bad to change password from script, but the root acc is not used at all and has been disabled from logon remotely. I just need it to keep various cronjob to keep running. Any other advise are welcome.

how to find out what is causing high mysql cpu load

Hi all, I have a CentOS 5.6 xen domU that is used for hosting several Apache virtual hosts that use MySQL. Lately, this domU has been having performance issues and I've noticed web pages loaded from this server opening slower than usual. When I run 'top' I see mysqld constantly consuming 10-60% of CPU. sar reports average of 10-20 for %user, 5 for %system, 0.2 for %iowait and 10-20 for %steal When looking at 'xm top' in dom0 (running also CentOS 5.6) most of the other domUs have CPU(%) near zero and only this domU is reported to consume CPU more than 10%. The strange thing is, that when I run 'mytop', I do not see that many queries: I see avg of 4 users "sleeping" and occasionally some other user running a query. qps is mostly 0. No slow queries. Key efficiency is 97%. Here is my /etc/my.cnf: max_connections = 300 max_user_connections = 300 wait_timeout = 180 Nothing interesting in /var/log/mysqld.log. I tried rebooting both the dom0 and the domU which made no difference. Questions: 1. How to debug further why mysqld is taking so much cpu? 2. If I've understood correctly, the high steal% value reported by sar means that the hypervisor is giving cpu time for some other domU. How to find out why and where this cpu time is stolen to? OT: DHCP address pool for specific MAC manufacturer

Dear CentOS, This is somewhat off-topic, but I do hope to implement this on a CentOS system, so here goes... I would like to be able to setup a dhcpd (or like) daemon to maintain two IP address pools. One for devices whose leading three octets of the client MAC address are specified and the other for all other clients. Both pools would be a defined range on a commmon /24 subnet. There a several static IP devices also on this net (servers, printer, etc...). At no time would there be more than a dozen of the specified MAC range devices active. I considered splitting the /24 block into two /25 blocks and creating a shared-network with two subnets, but that still leaves no way to wild-card the lower 3 octets, which I cannot know in advance. In addition to DHCP, I've looked at DNSmasq and a few others but no joy. I don't see a solution that doesn't require a significant development effort. I'm off to think about possible doing this in perl. I still hope someone has already done this. Thanks, Ray

CUPS not rendering documents via Samba

Hi guys, any CUPS / Samba experts out there? The CUPS printing guide is a horrendous maze of options. I've got nearly there but I've got one thing wrong and I don't know where to look. I set up our two printers (HP K5400s) using the GUI printer tool. Both print the test page just fine. I set up the [printers] and [print$] shares and can browse to the printers from Windows (XP for me) I managed to get the postscript drivers installed with cupsaddsmb and it installs on the XP client just fine. ..... sadly it just prints the postscript instead of rendering it. I guess the printer queue is in raw mode but I can't see where to change it. I vaguely remember foomatic and such from ages back. Hi, Can we display year in log files timestamp? We are being audited and the auditor wants to know when we apply certain patches. yum.log shows it, but it doesn't have the year. I can argue based on common sense, but it would be much nicer if the year is there. Lingering dhclient issue

I recently reconfigured some CentOS 4.3 systems that were using DHCP to use static IP addresses. At the same time, the systems were moved to a new VLAN. Here is the approximate sequence of events that took place: 1. ifdown eth0 2. edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with static IP address 3. wait for network folks to reconfigure switch 4. ifup eth0 I may have reversed steps 1 and 2 on some of the systems. The problem was that the dhclient process didn't go away, and kept renewing the old lease. Our DHCP server is configured to contact the DNS server and update the entry for each host it serves. So the DNS entries for these systems were pointing to the old address in the old VLAN. The eth0 interface itself just kept the static IP address for which it was configured. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. My question is, what could I have done to avoid this (other than killing the dhclient process)? Is there a better way to reconfigure an interface to use a static address? I am not interested in solutions that involve using a GUI (i.e., only command line solutions). Thanks, Alfred

CentOS 5 32bit and 3Tbyte drives

Has anyone tried to use these yet? For hysterical raisons, my primary machine is CentOS5 32bit (up to date). In the machine I have a SiI 3132 dual port SATA controller with port multiplier. Both ports are plugged into an external storage device which presents 4 SATA disks on each port, for a total of 8 possible disks. Currently I have 5*1Tb in there, configured as RAID5 via mdadm I boot off an internal SATA disk; I don't see a need to change that. But space is running out; I wondering if the new 3Tb disks would work in this scenario; most importantly will 2.6.18-238.9.1.el5PAE see the whole disk? And also whether I need to be worried about 4Kbyte sectors. These new disks are confusing me! -- rgds Stephen

Slightly OT: First Time KVM and LVM on Centos

Greetings - I am a novice system administrator and will soon be purchasing a new server to replacing an aging file server for my company. I am considering setting up the new server as a KVM host with two guests; one guest as the Samba file server and a second guest as a testing area. My old server was set up about 7 years ago and has a 5 disk raid 5 configuration without LVM. I understand the benefits of using LVM and KVM in the right circumstances, but have never used either of them. I have spent a couple of days over the last week trying to understand how to setup a KVM host with guests, but there is an area that I still don't understand; that is the relationship between the underlying raid partitions, LVM, and allocating space to a host and guests. Many of the standard search term combinations in Google don't seem to be getting me anywhere. From what I have read so far I think that I want to have my file server guest using a raw partition rather than an image file, but I haven't found anything with examples or best-practices guidance for partitioning or volume management with hosts and guest VMs. So I am hoping that someone here can give me some pointers, or point me to some clear how-to's somewhere. lots of disk activity keep process from responding

hi all I have something like 3000 log files in a directory (from data collection). At 4am in the morning cron runs a script of mine that essentiallly trims all files in that directory back to a certain size. Basically does a "tail -c XXXX filename > tmp_filename" I have noticed that only around the 4am-4:15 time frame when the trim is happening does my other process log connection attempts but my process (forking and opening databases) is not responding in time to give data back to the connecting process. Not critically important as it just tries again and all ok... My question is how do I tell the script that runs to run at a lower priority perhaps ??? Or is there another way to do this I am not aware of? The trimmming of the log files is just so they they dont take a bunch of space on the HD. It doesnt have to be done supper fast or anything. Personally, I find that indenting config files by 3 spaces has a lot of advantages to indenting them by 4 spaces although conventional wisdom might suggest otherwise. Who's with me on this?

Odd issue with custom udev rule at boot

Hi All, I've written a custom udev rule to change the permissions of /dev/ttyS* but it doesn't seem to be working at boot up. If I run /sbin/udevcontrol reload_rules; udevtrigger The rules are parsed, applied and the permissions are then correct but why is it not doing so at boot? The file in questions I've called /etc/udev/rules.d/49-udev-override.rules and it contains KERNEL=="tty[A-Z]*", NAME="%k", GROUP="rcl", MODE="0660", OPTIONS="last_rule" the default 50-udev.rules file has been left untouched. SELinux is in permissive mode and so I can't find a reason why it is happening. Anyone have any ideas? -- James A. Possible to use multiple disk to bypass I/O wait?

I'm trying to resolve an I/O problem on a CentOS 5.6 server. The process basically scans through Maildirs, checking for space usage and quota. Because there are hundred odd user folders and several 10s of thousands of small files, this sends the I/O wait % way high. The server hits a very high load level and stops responding to other requests until the crawl is done. I am wondering if I add another disk and symlink the sub-directories to that, would that free up the server to respond to other requests despite the wait on that disk? Alternatively, if I mdraid mirror the existing disk, would md be smart enough to read using the other disk while the first's tied up with the first process?

A bridge problem

We just went to replace the bridge/firewall services one one server with the same on another. It's pretty simple, and I literally cloned (w/ rsync) a third server that does this onto the one that will be the new one. Then copied the /etc/sysconfig/iptables from the one being replaced, and brought it up this morning. Nope. We had to put everything back the way it was. The new one sees the two or three servers behind the firewall, and we can ping them, from the new box. On one, we see IPP broadcasts; in fact, we see lots of broadcast packets using tcpdump. From outside, though, you can't see the servers. Trying to ping them, they see nothing. It seems to be the case that tcp and icmp packets are blocked, and we can't figure out why. Are the updates supposed to be synced to the mirrors before the announce message goes out? Only a random few machines could get these updates yesterday. I enabled the 'priority' plugin as a short-term fix because we have a lot of repositories and I wasn't entirely sure which ones could be discarded. The dell-omsa repo seems to have lost its priority=1 line and the plugin seems to assume priority=<bignumber> and thus the dell repo was being excluded. Added the priority=1 line and everything installed OK. (Yes I will tell him as he sits opposite me but the list deserved to know the answer too.) -- Roy

OT: clear error from premature disk removal from LVM

Hi all, This question is only slightly ontopic, in that the host system is a CentOS 5 box, but is otherwise a fairly generic question. I've looked in so many different places for an answer, but haven't had much luck, so I'm hoping someone here has some advice. (for the record: I posted this question to comp.os.linux.misc a few weeks ago) === I made a minor mistake recently, and am trying to determine the cleanest way to clear it. Attached to my hardware RAID controller were two RAID6 units. One was the original disks that came with the server, which originally hosted our data, but had since had all its data migrated to a new LVM PV. The other is newer disks with a new PV, VG, and LV. For testing purposes, after completing the pvmove I created a clean, new LV on the unit containing the old disks. (I believe that I actually destroyed the original RAID6 array and created a new one.) Unfortunately, I completely forgot about this LV during a recent hardware upgrade, and didn't run through the LVM steps to completely remove an unused physical volume before removing these old disks. (At least the LV was not mounted at the time). Now LVM seems to be confused about the disks and volumes that are available, and the kernel may also be confused. Taken from a recent reboot, here's the dmesg log entry for the old testing unit: sd 1:0:2:0: Attached scsi disk sdc Later on, I removed the disks through the controller's tools, replaced them with new ones (so this is the third set of disks), and created a new RAID6 unit. After making the new unit I see (among other messages which don't seem helpful): May 19 16:27:28 xxxx kernel: sd 1:0:2:0: Attached scsi disk sdd Later on, when trying to run parted or friends, I see messages like so: May 23 11:22:47 xxxx kernel: scsi 1:0:2:0: rejecting I/O to dead device (note the same scsi address as sdc?) And pvdisplay says: # pvdisplay /dev/testVG/testLV: read failed after 0 of 4096 at 0: Input/output error That looks bad--it seems like testLV is trying to find the old LVM on /dev/sdc, but the array on sdd is there instead. Worse, I fear that trying to manipulate sdd may cause problems in the future, so am wary of doing anything with it before I clear up this issue. What should my next steps be? I've seen recommendations (in other somewhat similar situations) to try an lvscan or vgscan to refresh the list of volumes; or to try vgreduce --removemissing to remove the now-gone volumes from what LVM thinks is there. I do also still have the original disks, which I could put back and try to get LVM to re-find, but would be a pain. I am hoping to avoid a reboot, since the current LV seems unaffected and is in use, but I can do it if it's the surest way to make sure my LVM configuration is clean. I should point out that I do not care at all about the data on testLV; all I want to do is cleanly tell LVM not to worry about that volume any more, and be in a position to use the third set of disks safely and reliably. Compiling PHP and MySQL

Hi everyone, I need to install an older version of PHP - 5.2.16, which is not currently available through an official CentOS repo (as far as I can tell). In order to fulfill our developer's requirements, I've decided to just compile PHP and MySql from the source. Is there a way to find out what are the usual configure options that are used to compile binaries that are available through yum? Thank you! Asya
