what is difference between "slow initialize" and "patrol read" on RAID?

We have DELL server with MD1000 Disk array in it. O.S. is CENTOS 5.5. Recently every time MD1000 "patrol read" start I will get "media error" messages on /var/log/message file. I use MD1000 "slow initialize" to initialize "bad disk" and NO error. After "slow initialize" finish, I manually "startup patrol read". I continue get "media error" on /var/log/message. Anyone know what difference between "slow initialize" and "patrol read"? Thanks.

daemon user can't acess file while nobody user can.

I have a server where /home is on a nfs. I installed an apache (my compile) server. By default, it runs as daemon. That user can't acces files in /home/*/public_html, while the nobody user can. So if I change my apache config, it now can. /home is : drwxr-xr-x /home/user is : drwxr-xr-x /home/user/public_html is : drwxr-xr-x selinux is disabled. In the error log of apache I get : (13)Permission denied: access to /~user/file.jpg denied I changed the shell for the daemon user so I can diagnose a little bit more, and I cannot get into the user directory. When on a local drive, it's ok. So why is that the daemon user cannot go into the user directory via nfs ?

I was just saying that I'm not asking here merely because I'm too lazy to look on my own... I've got this logitech v220 notebook mouse, and the scroll wheel can be clicked left or right as well as rotated or clicked by pressing down. "normal" usage (i.e., left click, right click, middle click, and rotation of scroll wheel) works fine. Using xev I don't see anything reported for the side-click of the scroll wheel, so it may be that without some action by a driver, that the side-clicks aren't enabled. I suspect that Logitech's windoze driver tweaks the mouse in some way that "turns on" the additional actions of pressing the wheel to the left or right. The package lists LInux (2.6 kernel) as a supported OS, but of course they provide only windows/mac drivers for it, and the web site explicitly lists Linux as not supported. Talk about mixed messages. It's not a big deal, was just wondering if there was a way to recognize those clicks, in case there was something useful to be done with them. I've tried tweaking xorg.conf to increase number of buttons and changing z-axis from "4 5" to "6 7" but that stops the scroll wheel from working at all, so I put it back. Installing rather than changing

After reading the replies to my message about changing from RHEL to CentOS I think it might be easier to install the latest version of CentOS from scratch. I can save my home directory and my e-mail setup. My access to the present system is by ssh. How can I download everything with ssh then start the install? Since I am blind, I may need sighted help during the actual install process. Is it possible to specify answers to the questions wich the install will ask beforehand? Pardon the dumb questions. hard disk install failure

Has anybody successfully installed CentOS- I tried (several times) installing CentOS-5.6 from a hard disk, and each time it failed after installing all the rpms, with the warning "The installation has tried to mount image #2, but cannot find it on the hard drive." When I pressed the Debug button one time after the failure, it seemed to say that it was looking for the file in /dev/sdb7//ext2/ (/dev/sdb7 being the site of the DVD ISO). But I'm not sure what "image #2" is? Or where it should be put? Incidentally, I started by copying isolinux/vmlinuz and isolinux/initrd.img to the the directory CentOS-5.6 in the /boot parition of a working linux (Fedora) system, and adding the stanza ---------------------------- title CentOS-5.6 root (hd0,1) kernel /CentOS-5.6/vmlinuz repo=hd:/dev/sdb5:/ initrd /CentOS-5.6/initrd.img ---------------------------- The repo option was ignored, and I was asked if I wanted to install by FTP, from Hard Disk, etc. In the end I installed by http from my web-server, after mount -o loop CentOS-5.6-x86_64-bin-DVD-1of2.iso /var/www/html/ on the server . I'm running a headless server, so no GUI, just ssh logins. I don't seem to have the mechanism that automounts USB drives to a subdirectory of /media, and from googling around I think that's a feature of a GUI-based system. What implements it? Right now I manually create a mountpoint in /mnt and then manually mount by label from /dev/disk/by-label after plugging the drive in. It would be convenient if the drive automounted when plugged in.

ftp problem?

Can grep show the matching lines and the next N lines after a match? For instance, I have a config file wit hthe following text: [Tag h1] foreground=#2e5a03 underline=double indent=0 weight=PANGO_WEIGHT_BOLD scale=2.25 I would ideally grep on "[Tag h1]" and have grep display the match and the next 5 lines so that I see all the content of the h1 section. Problem changing server on a LAN

I'm having great difficulty trying to change server on my home LAN. At present 192.168.2.2 is my server, running CentOS-5.6 and connecting to an ADSL modem. I want to change server to another CentOS machine, 192.168.2.5 . The problem is that I cannot get the computers on the system to forget the old server, even when it is completely disconnected, and the new server is connected to the modem. It seems extraordinarily difficult to get rid of the link to the old server. Even when all the machines are re-booted they still want to give 192.168.2.2 as their default gateway. Is this a problem often met in this kind of situation? Hello, I run CentOS 5.6 on a Dell PowerEdge R815 with 256 GB of RAM. We use Sun Grid Engine to schedule jobs on this node. I want to limit the memory usage about 150 GB per process. So i use the /etc/security/limits.conf configuration file. I test this configuration with some tools with a lower GB limit (about 2 or 4 GB), and it works ! Has anyone got Bastille-linux running on Centos-5.6? http://bastille-linux.sourceforge.net claims RHEL5 support but I ran into problems running it on a Centos 5.6 test system. First I had to "ln -s /usr/lib64/Bastille /usr/lib" just to get it to run at all. I've seen fslint and fdupes recommended for this in CentOS, but neither seem to be available as packages. Is anyone using either under CentOS-5.6? Trying to understand USB HD configuration

I am trying to understand how my USB drive is setup in Centos 5.5 -- especially since I made a mistake of backing up to it when it was not turned on. The USB drive is accessed as /media/disk. However, when I did a backup WITHOUT the drive turned on, the data was put into the directory, /media/disk. Now, when I turn on the USB drive (it is self-mounted in 5.5), the USB drive has been assigned "disk-1" -- understood. What I am missing is the "table" that contains the information pointing to USB drive, disk-1. I would like to reset the table so that "disk" is the USB drive and delete the data that is now on my main drive. Hopefully I have explained the situation properly. It makes interesting listening because there are claims that they tried to engage with the CentOS devs to offer support and resourcing, but that relationship was not forthcoming... so they intend to build (as I see it) a direct competitor distribution (i.e. "binary compatible"). Also interestingly, apparently they have recruited help from the SME/Contribs people, so I don't know if that means SME will die because it had precious little resources to start with (and now those resources work for the competition) or SME will still carry on and be rebased on Clear Core. Also stated in the audio is that this was all a direct response to the uncertainties around CentOS. So, it is interesting to see how this is all going to pan out.

Why, the same company that offered this new o/s on their brand new product, the IBM PC in 1980: IBM. RedHat, at least, has not taken the path to the Dark Side, as the Other Company did.... mark
