UPS issues with PFC PSU

Just noticed that our new server has a newer 80+ efficiency 865W PSU with PFC. So apparenty our existing 1500VA (865W) APC Back-UPS is not safe to use anymore. We apparently need a pure sine wave UPS. http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8883 I found an affordable 1500VA UPS by CyberPower, model CP1500PFCLCD, which has a pure sine wave output. Wondering if anyone has experience with CyberPower UPS's. Are they any good? Any problems with pwrstatd ? -- Robert Arkiletian Eric Hamber Secondary, Vancouver, Canada

CentOS 6 KDE: remove default icons

On my newly installed CentOS 6 I am running KDE (I think; I selected it in the setup, but how would I know?). It has three default icons: Computer; Root's Home; Trash. I do not see them in /root/Desktop. How can I remove them? Thanks, Mike.

OT: Hardware upgrade help

I would like to upgrade my system to a 64 bit machine. I'd like to find a bare bones platform to build on. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money on this as it is a home system. I looked on the CentOS sponsor page but only saw hosting services. I haven't kept up with hardware in years so I'm dumber than dirt on what's out there. I would prefer a desktop so I can stack it. Don't think I need to do the Xeon as that would be overkill for a home user. This would be replacing my 'server' so I need PCI slots for an additional NIC and a 32 bit video capture card used for zoneminder. Not sure what PCI express is or if my cards would work in those slots. Yep, I'm running 8 yrs old machines, IBM NetVistas. :-( Any help or referal to a sponsor would be greatly appreciated. rsync CR upgrade

Hello Is anyone else having problems on 5.6 using the new rsync from the CR repo I have only managed to get rsync (called from the cli) working again after downgrading it to the previous 2.x release as the newer version was just spitting out the ssh usage information and failing. This server is stock i386 with just the CR as an extra repo. regards mike

LINUX kernel segment error 6

We have DELL R900 with CENTOS 5.5 installed. Recently I found /var/log/messages have following error come out. I used DELL OPMN check hardware but NO error. kernel: ctxhx[17268]: segfault at 00007fff1fa6afd8 rip 00002b8022887c96 rsp 00007fff1fa6afe0 error 6 anyone know what wrong? Thanks.

Missing UIDs

From time to time I'm seeing this message: I couldn't find the numerical IDs of these users: abrt nslcd pulse rtkit saslauth tcpdump usbmuxd In most cases this is caused by inconsistencies in the user or group database, e.g. between the files /etc/passwd, /etc/group and their respective shadow files /etc/shadow and /etc/gshadow. I will try to ignore these entries and continue for now, but please fix these inconsistencies as soon as possible.it </quote> My first thought was to use system-config-user and create users with IDs matching their group IDs. However, doing it that way requires passwords to be set. How should I correct this? Anne

qemu-kvm-0.15 + CentOS 5.6 + vanilla 2.6.35.14 (working, patch included)

Hi! Just in case somebody else needs this. Below is a patch which allows building qemu-kvm-0.15 unter CentOS 5.6 with vanilla kernel 2.6.35.14 and (optionally) vde2 [1]. FYI: qemu-kvm-0.15 compiles fine on CentOS 6 with distro-kernel, no patches needed. For CentOS 5.6, unpack 0.15 qemu-kvm tarball [2], apply the path below, configure and compile. Make sure to export the kernel include path before building, otherwise the kernel mman-common.h header won't be found: export CPATH=/lib/modules/2.6.35.14/build/include The patch also adds some #error pragmas to make sure that KSM is used. This isn't a requirement to run, though. If you'd like to use vde2 too, then additionally export the paths to the vde2 installation (here: /opt/vde2) before configure (if vde2 is not installed in /opt/vde2 then change your paths accordingly): export CCFLAGS="-I/opt/vde2/include" export LDFLAGS="-L/opt/vde2/lib" export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/opt/vde2/lib${LD_LIBRARY_PATH:+:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH}" With the above, ./configure --enable-vde works (for me). I'm posting this here, rather than on a kvm list, because this is rather CentOS 5 specific, IMHO. Anyways, if you reply to this, please be sure to add a CC: to my email address.
