LVM thin volumes fstrim operation not supported

Hi All I'm trying to setup my LVM thin pool to support discards so that the pool can reclaim space even if the underlying device doesn't support trim. It is my understanding that all thin pools should support trim even if the underlying device doesn't. (please correct me if I'm wrong here) I have one centos server that does support trim and everything is working correctly but any new servers and thin pools throw the error below. # fstrim -v /mnt/data00 fstrim: /mnt/data00: the discard operation is not supported I can't find any differences in the LVM configuration between the two servers, they both have the lv discards set to passthough. Can anyone tell me if I'm missing something when creating the thin pool that would allow me to perform the fstrim. I'm using xfs on all of the lvs. Thanks, Tim

Setting up a userID for an SSH tunnel

I need/desire to set up a userID for an SSH tunnel, but not allow said user to have a login to the server. For the user to set up the tunnel with: ssh -p 1234 -L 8080:192.168.1.4:80 george(a)gateway.foo.com Where george would use a password instead of a stored SSH key, could george be created with: useradd -s /sbin/nologin -c "George" george passwd george thanks

Supervisory

Dear All I have a centos server with super user password access. There are a number of users on the same net accessing it via telnet with their dedicated id/pwd . For the supervision purposes, I need to know which user is issuing what command on the server . In other words , monitoring their activities . Can you please let me know how it can be done on the centos? Thank you in advance

Skype 4.3.0.37 on Centos 7

Hi, Does anybody tried to install Skype on Centos 7.2? It is giving a segmentation fault when you start it. I installed using the nux repository and the fedora rpm. Looking for uvch264src in gstreamer-1.0 plugins bad free

I am using CentOS 7.2 and looking for the uvch264src element in gstreamer. It is supposed to be in the plugins - bad -free which I have installed. gst-inspect-1.0 does not show it. How can I get this element? Thanks, Jerry

CPU Freq Scaling

Hi list, I'm using C7 and noticed that cpu freq is enabled with governor conservative. I've used cpupower utils for governor change, but at the next boot it restart with conservative governor. I've tried also to start cpupower service and setting OPT in /etc/sysconfig/cpupower but it does not works. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance

gfortran "static" linking on CentOS 7

Dear all, on CentOS 6 one could use -static-libgcc -static-libgfortran to obtain a binary which would run on other computers which don't have gfortran installed. On CentOS 7 one can install the libgfortran-static and libquadmath-static RPMs but the resulting binary _still_ requires /lib64/libquadmath.so as revealed by ldd. gfortran does not recognize an option like -static-libquadmath . libquadmath is required even for tiny programs which do not use high precision data types. Heavy use of Google did not bring any result. I tried with linker options -Wl,-Bstatic and so on, but without changes. So, can anyone tell me how to compile/link with gfortran a binary which does not have a requirement for libquadmath? If this is not possible, why are there libgfortran-static and libquadmath-static RPMs ? thank you, Kay

grub2-mkconfig strange error

When I run "grub2-mkconfig" on my CentOS-7.1 desktop I get the warning (4 times) /usr/sbin/grub2-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/block/8. Check your device.map. What exactly does this mean? My device map looks perfectly normal to me: [root@helen ~]# cat /boot/grub2/device.map (hd0) /dev/sda (hd1) /dev/sdb This makes me reluctant to boot into CentOS-7.2. An additional, possibly related, query. When I run grub2-mkconfig it lists various OS's it finds: ========================= Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1 Found CentOS Linux release 7.1.1503 (Core) on /dev/sda12 Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sdb1 Found CentOS release 6.5 (Final) on /dev/sdb5 Found CentOS release 5.6 (Final) on /dev/sdc7 done ========================= Why does it not list CentOS 7.2 since it ========================= Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.10.0-327.4.4.el7.x86_64 Found initrd image: /boot/initramfs-3.10.0-327.4.4.el7.x86_64.img ========================= -- Timothy Murphy gayleard /at/ eircom.net School of Mathematics, Trinity College, Dublin
