Memory vs. Display Card

Since memory has become quite cheap lately I decided to move from 2 GB to 6. When I installed the memory every thing was fine until I went to run level 5. At that point the screen turned to garbage and the system froze. Is there a way to fix this so I can use the memory I bought? Do I need a new display card? SSD for Centos SWAP /tmp & /var/ partition

Has anyone actually used a SSD in a Centos setup? My little experiment with a s/h WD drive for /tmp and SWAP partitions kicked the bucket on Wednesday, when the poor WD drive caught the click-of-death. It was a s/h drive to start with and lasted about 4 months. But that was without the /var/log/ partition being written to it, as I mounted that back onto /var/log from the original drive. So I had to install another (WD) drive, and repartion it and rebuild my RPM package database, from the backed-up Packages file. That seems to be all OK now. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to use a new SSD for moving all the disk i/o to, that Linux likes to do so often. Plus putting SWAP onto a decent SSD should speed things up somewhat. Here's a short video of a laptop fitted with a SSD drive booting macOS, compared to a similar laptop booting from the standard HDD. The laptop with the SSD boots and loads some apps in 28 seconds. CentOS 6.8 and samba

Other than the original 6.8 release version 3.6.23-33, samba has not been functioning correctly for me under 6.8. The symptoms are that about 6-7 days after starting the server, users start complaining that they can no longer open documents on their share. Upon inspection, I find several, sometimes nearly a dozen smb processes owned by a single user, on top of those run under root. Stopping the service does not stop these processes. They are only killable with SIGKILL, and after that, a service restart does not result in a functioning service, i.e. connections are refused, which can be verified easily with smbclient. The only cure is a server reboot. And it is not the same user id every time it happens. Useful logs of any type are not available. I have tested -35 and -36, both show the same behaviour. This is a production server and I have no time for tinkering; downgrading to -33 and blocking samba updates is the only workaround for now.

How to enable the svm cpu flag inside a vm?

Hello, I'm trying to get the Android Emulator to run inside a kvm vm on CentOS-6. Apparently the latest Android Emulators cannot run without hardware acceleration so I am trying to get the vm to see the svm cpu flag. I want to connect to a l2tp server from centos.

I have a server currently connecting to a pptp remote server. This server(lns\lac) has the option for pptp connections and l2tp connections. The l2tp connections are not using ipsec encryption at all. I have seen couple guides\tutorials on the internet: - https://raymii.org/s/tutorials/IPSEC_L2TP_vpn_on_CentOS_-_Red_Hat_Enterpris… - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/L2TP/IPsec_VPN_client_setup But all the guides that I have found are using ipsec with "secret". On ubuntu there is a gui applet that helps setting these kind of connections up but I am working with a CentOS server and not Ubuntu desktop. If someone used l2tp the same way I want to use on CentOS 7 please give me some advice. If you have a guide which might help me I will be more then happy to see this one. Thanks, Eliezer

Help with httpd userdir recovery

I lost my harddrive on my little personal webserver that only serves some private files from my userdir. So I am trying to build this from notes on a new Centos7.3 installation (well really Centos7.3-arm, but supposedly same sources). Right now the server is running on a test subnet, not the production, but I have set up the hostname and my standard httpd edits. I have enabled userdir and setup my /home/rgm/public_html directory with 711 permissions. I can display the /home/rgm/public_html/index.html file that only has "Hello World' in it (to prevent anyone from walking my file tree from the root). But when I try to display the files in a subdir with ipaddr/~rgm/mydir I get You don't have permission to access /~rgm/mydir/ on this server. So obviously I have forgotten something that I did not put into my notes, or something has changed from Centos6. Avago (LSI) SAS-3 controller, poor performance on CentOS 7

I have a handful of new systems where I've seen unexpectedly low disk performance on an Avago SAS controller, when using CentOS 7. It looked like a regression, so I installed CentOS 6 on one of them and reloaded CentOS 7 on the other. Immediately after install, a difference is apparent in the RAID rebuild speed. The CentOS 6 system is initializing its software RAID5 array at somewhere around 120MB/s, while the CentOS 7 system is rebuilding at around 55MB/s. It took a while to get an older system installed, and I wasn't able to boot CentOS 6 under UEFI, to that's one difference between the systems. I also set the elevator on CentOS 7 to cfq, to match the CentOS 6 system. That didn't have any apparent effect. Other than that, the kernel reports "MSI-X vectors supported: 96" on C6, but "MSI-X vectors supported: 8" on C7. I don't know if that's a difference that would affect performance. Does anyone have experience with these controllers? Any pointers while I continue tracking this down?
