HAL adds printer twice

Hi, When I want to configure a printer, say an HP Deskjet 940, I install hplip, configure cupsd.conf, open up http://localhost:631 and configure the printer in the CUPS interface. Now whenever I want to print, I see that the selfsame printer is added again, and CUPS mentions it as "added by HAL". Is there a way to stop this sort of behaviour? Cheers, Niki

Adding patch to Centos Kernel - early build failure

Hi Guys I'm trying to add the patch mentioned in this thread to the plain Centos kernel http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2008-August/062845.html I've followed the directions on the wiki for building a custom kernel, but after applying all the patches it fails with: make[1]: *** [nonint_oldconfig] Error 4 make: *** [nonint_oldconfig] Error 2 error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.74263 (%prep) RPM build errors: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.74263 (%prep) Can anyone help with this? Or is there an easier way to apply the patch, as I'm not wanting to change the config of the kernel in any way? Thanks Dunc

Why i can't configure network and hostname with this kickstart file?

cpufreq and suspend

With my OQO, I get the following message when I try to suspend: cpufreq: suspend failed to assert current frequency is what timing core thinks it is. I see in /var/log/messages: kernel: acpi-cpufreq: CPU0 - ACPI performance management activated There are a number of apps and such dedicated to 'cpufreq' on the system. I have done a bit of searching and have not figured out what to do to address this so I can put the OQOs into suppend mode. Any pointers out there?

Build fails on new kernel source

On my x86_64, I pulled down the source for the 2.6.18-92.1.13 kernel and followed the wiki faithfully, but it will not build. Request info on managing MySQL

Good day/night/whatever fellow techies, I've come to a small problem managing mysql on CentOS 4.7 box[1]. When I have done things on mysql on my desktop systems it was always just for personal use so I would be lazy and put everything under the "test" db so I didn't have to deal with all that security. But I find that I need to put some db's on the "production" box and could use a little assistance. I can manage with the bulk of the work but since mysql is all pre-configured on RH based systems I don't know where to find the root password or any other tidbits needed to get started. Access to the grant and other admin db's and tables is all I believe I need. Looking through the docs on centos.org didn't reveal anything to me (or I just missed it). So the end result of this message is simply can someone point me to the howto use mysql on CentOS/RHEL info. I just need to be able to start adding db's and such. Once there I'm good to go. SIze of reformatted USB drive

I just reformatted an 8Gb USB drive as ext3. While as FAT32, it was reported as having well over 7Gb free (did not note the exact capacity). I reformatted with mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1 Now it is reported (oh, this is with properties in Nautilus) as having 6.8Gb capacity (free space actually). Does this makes sense that ext3 has less available space than fat32?

Implementing LVS changes made in Piranha GUI

Every time I touch something, pieces fall off! It's a good thing this stuff isn't in production yet (for me I mean). So I had an LVS, configured with Piranha, directing http test transactions across two servers. I used Piranha to add another realserver. It appeared in the lvs.cf file, but didn't appear in the ipvsadm output. So I stopped and restarted Pulse. And now *none* of the servers appear in the ipvsadm output. Pulse says it started clean, and nothing in the syslog. The gratuitous arp gets made, and the correct IPs are assigned to the correct interfaces. [ddb@prcapp02 ~]$ sudo ipvsadm IP Virtual Server version 1.2.1 (size=4096) Prot LocalAddress:Port Scheduler Flags -> RemoteAddress:Port Forward Weight ActiveConn InActConn TCP prcvmod01.pinerivercapital.l wlc That's the write service name (the ".l" at the end is ".local" truncated). WLC is the right scheduling mode. But no remote addresses are listed.
