Difficulty with 5.0 - 5.1 upgrade: sysreport vs. sos

I got file conflicts between the sysreport and sos packages on the file /usr/sbin/sysreport. I unchecked sysreport in the package updater UI and the rest of the update is proceedng.

x86_64 versus i386

Hello, On the Intel Core 2 Duo processor based systems, we have the option of installing either x86_64 or the i386 distribution. I would like to know your experiences with the x86_64 port. How does it compare with the i386 distribution in terms of stability, reliability and performance ? How significant are the performance benefits gained by using the x86_64 linux instead of i386 on the same system ? Keeping in mind a production environment, which port of CentOS do you recommend for a Core 2 Duo based server ? It would be great to have your opinion. Thanks, Manish

CentOS-5.1 is based on the upstream release 5.1, and includes packages from all variants including Server and Client. All upstream repositories have been combined into one, to make it easier for end users to work with. And the option to further enable external repositories at install time is now available in the installer. Further Arch support for PowerPC, IA64 and Sparc are planned and will be released soon. These arch's will follow the existing pattern of release to Beta first, and then to Final. This is the first release where we are also publishing a special netinstall iso that can be used to start a remote install. Its included in the isos/ directory. This iso is in addition to the boot.iso published in the images/ directory of the distribution - there are no changes to that file. +++++++++++++++++++++++ Verification of downloads and media We highly recommend that all forms of downloads be verified before use. Both md5sum and sha1sum for all isos and torrents released by the CentOS project are published at the same location as the isos and torrents themselves. md5sum and sha1sum verification tools are available for all major platforms. As an added option, but not a replacement to the md5sum/sha1sum process, its possible to check media during install time. All rpms published by the CentOS project are signed with a gpg key, and by default we configure yum to verify this signature on package download. In order to check that this is operating as normal ensure that each repository section includes two lines that look exactly like this : gpgcheck=1 gpgsignature=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-5 Note: 1) url to the gpg key will never point at an external non .centos.org machine. 2) a copy of the gpg key is also provided on the install media, and installed as /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-5, however do the possibility of compromised media we recommend you still verify that key with the one hosted on http://mirror.centos.org/ +++++++++++++++++++++++ Download Instructions: First a request from us : When possible, consider using torrents to run the downloads. Not only does it help the community and keeps mirrors from running up high bandiwdth bills, in most cases you will find its also the fastest means to download the distro. how to get the source for installed RPM (CUPS)

I would like to change a few things in CUPS, but I would prefer to use the source for the version of CUPS that I already have installed using yum. Mostly because I'm quite happy with the way it works except a few details. Is there a way to get the source using yum or should I go to http://www.cups.org/software.php and get it from there ? The version I installed with yum is 1.1.22 and on http://www.cups.org/software.php the best match is 1.1.23. Or would you suggest I go with the latest version released on http://www.cups.org/software.php ? This is the first time I feel the need to change something so I'm not quite sure how to start out on this and I don't want to spend a lot of time on the wrong source code. best regards Ulrik

Have a look at http://zimbra.com. It has an open-source version with unlimited users. I've tried both it and scalix and much prefer zimbra. [Fred Kienker] Scalix has announced starting with Version 11.3, to be released mid December 2007, the number of premium users available in the Community Edition will be reduced from 25 to 10. The number of standard users will remain unlimited for now. There is new commercial licenses available starting at 20 users to fill in the gap. You can continue to use Ver. 11.2 which will remain at 25 premium users forever, but there are several serious issues in this version which will not be addressed except by updating to 11.3. In our experience the most current version of the Community Edition tends to be beta test software - YMMV. Hi: I'm new to Centos mailing list. Please excuse the simple questions. The only archive I can find for this list appears to be unsearchable. Is there another archive somewhere, where one can search? Am I in the right list to discuss problems with Centos5 xen distro? I'm having a problem with a foreign-language keyboard in the guest installation (which is also Centos5). unstable libdg error when ./configure Perfparse on Nagios 2.x / CentOS 4.x

I'm trying to ./compile Perfparse on my Nagios CentOS 4.x box, but am having this error. (And am hoping someone here might point me in the right direction) "configure: error: required library libgd unusable." Here is a history of my problems: First, it ./configure 'd ok, but I couldn't "make && make install" due to an error. I googled and found this FAQ on the the subject (http://perfparse.de/tiki-view_faq.php?faqId=1) ********************************************************* Q: When i try to compile, i get errors like: perfparse-0.105.5/perfparse/storage.c:269: undefined reference to `g_path_get_basename' A: Try this: cd perfparse make copy & paste the "/bin/sh ../libtool ...." line and add "/opt/gnome/lib64/libglib-2.0.so" at the end. The path may vary. Try to find the libglib-2.0.so. Then try again with "make". ********************************************************* Not sure what happened, but it eventually was working, and later I got past that error and got a "gdImage" error when I tried to "make && make install". (This too is on the FAQ page) ********************************************************* "A: The gd library is probably not installed yet on your system. Or you are missing the development package such as libgd-devel or libgd-dev. Install gd and try again." ********************************************************* Not knowing what to do (gd-2.0.28-5.4E and gd-devel-2.0.28-5.4E were installed), we "yum removed" these packages (which destroyed Nagios, and I had to reinstall and reconfigure that too), and ever since, I've gotten that ""configure: error: required library libgd unusable" error whenever I've tried to ./configure with the automake tools. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

On a relatively new Nagios 2.x / CentOS 4.x server (only like a week old), I am experiencing gd(-devel/-progs) problems and am wondering if I should just scrape and rebuild. Here is my situation: I installed LAMP+Nagios+NagiosQL and was going to install PerfParse so that I could have trending info integrated with Nagios. The configure script would run ok, but would crap out on make && make install, leading me to believe something was missing from the configure script (I had all the prequesisite files installed). In an effort to fix it, another sysadmin did a "yum remove gd", which ripped out Nagios. I reinstalled Nagios and gd, thinking that would be ok, and since then, PerfParse's configure script says that "libgd is unusable" Any ideas? Or should I just scrape and rebuild while I still have time before this goes into production?
