SHOULD I NEED TO RECOMPILE THE KERNEL ?

Hi, I am still runnig Redhat 9 box with sendmail and squid. It is quite slow. It has only 128 MB RAM. So I upgraded it to 512 MB RAM. Now, It is running with 512 MB RAM. But, It is still slow. No progress has been achived. Some users say it is slower than before. Actually, I also have noticed it is NOW SLOWER than before. WHY IS THAT? SHOULD I NEED TO RECOMPILE THE KERNEL as I installed a new 512 MB RAM ? help needed? -- Thank you Indunil Jayasooriya

NFS filesystem recommendations please (and problems with XFS)

Hello all, I am implementing a new mail server into our environment consisting of three machines - two Dell Opterons that will act as load balanced Postfix servers, and a 1.5TB RAID10 NFS server. All three machines are running CentOS 4.5. Since the NFS is going to be used for only mail, I was kicking around the idea to use XFS. I have CentOS installed on an ext3 partition, and with the leftover space on the NFS I created an XFS partition. I tried to implement XFS into the kernel, and was coming across some issues. Even after installing xfprogs and xfsprogs-devel, and issuing the command: yum --enable-plusrepos install kernel I booted up the kernel and still could not mount my XFS share. I keep getting this error: mount: fs type xfs not supported by kernel After googling around (and not finding out how to get XFS enabled in the kernel), people had some concerns about using XFS due to issues and it being about as fast as ext3. Also people said that I might run into issues with XFS if I run NFS+lvm+xfs+md but I'm not sure if I run lvm and md and if that applies to me. I found this benchmarking blog someone wrote that compares the speeds in Ubuntu with all the filesystems in a Postfix server environment (although it's not NFS): http://piao-tech.blogspot.com/2007/04/file-system-benchmarks-for-postfix-ma… With all this said, I'd like to use XFS, if it indeed is going to be the fastest for the solution I want to implement. If you guys can help me get that installed by telling me what I need - great! If you think XFS isn't going to work as efficiently and fast as I want it to, and there is another filesystem (such as ext3) that will be more stable and just as fast in my setup, I'm all ears. Yum missing dependency

I haven't run any updates on my systems recently, but now I'm trying to get them up to date again. When I run a yum update, I get this error: Error: Missing Dependency: initscripts >= 7.93.26.EL-1 is needed by package httpd I did a Google search, but I didn't find anything relating directly to CentOS or RHEL and there was no fix suggested. If it makes a difference, I am running the update against a newly created mrepo repository. Any suggestions? -- Bowie

Active Directory

Hello For the moment I manage the user in the network with win 2000 Server. I want to use an linux OS to manaxhe the network? Is this possible. So. How can I organize and configure the Cent OS to use it as Active Directory or something like this, and to open all the existing users there, and then to shut down the win2000 Server and to Activate the CentOS as domain controller? yum upgrade perl question

I'm looking to install n2rrd, which requires Perl 5.8.x (http://n2rrd.diglinks.com/cgi-bin/trac.cgi) I see that lots of Perl stuff is installed. Do I just need to yum upgrade perl-libwww-perl-5.78.5 to the latest? Security checklist for new Centos server?

Greetings, everybody I've browsed around a bit, but there seems to be no single practical list of this kind. What would you do to make a new Centos server which must run apache, IMAP (Dovecot) and SMTP (PostFix) and nothing else for a few domains as secure from attacks as possible, using only standard RPM packages as much as possible? (Please note that choice of other IMAP and SMTP servers is not possible in my case, for a lot of reasons really not pertinent on the list, so let's not go there, please) Here's a first absolutely uncomplete draft off the top of my head: - remove as many unnecessary packages as possible (best way to find them?) - install dovecot (not included in centos, IIRC) and other extra packages you do need - run yum update - enable long passwords - set up only ssh2 on a non standard port - set up Single Packet Authorization? - set up itables (what would the safest iptables script to do all and only the services listed above? - what else? Feel free to rearrange, cut, add, give links, whatever: personally, I'm interested in securing the whole box, meaning how to glue things together in the safest possible way, without forgetting anything, while things like how to make Postfix not an open relay, for example, are already covered in detail in the Postfix docs.
