I thought some people here might like to know what we just found out while trying to get VMWare running under CentOS 5. Before we found the note about changing VMWare from 2 to 1 CPU's, we went to `Edit' -> `Preferences' -> `Memory' and changed the memory option to: Fit All virtual memory into reserved host RAM It had been set to the next option down, second out of 3 (we don't have the system any more to see what it said word for word). This had a HUGE effect on performance. Before the change, it would take several minutes to do anything under VMWare. Startups and shutdowns were dog slow. Turning off the swap options helped a lot. After that, we also changed from 2 to 1 CPU's and that helped a little bit, but the memory option change had the biggest effect. Just thought you might like to know.

Questions about network configuration

Hi, I'm currently reading chapter 13 of the RHEL Deployment Guide, and taking some notes. I have a few minor questions: /etc/sysconfig/network According to the doc: "This file specifies routing and host information for all network interfaces." Here's how mine looks like: --8<----------------- NETWORKING=yes NETWORKING_IPV6=yes HOSTNAME=fujitsu.zuhause GATEWAY=192.168.1.254 --8<----------------- NETWORKING_IPV6= -> I wonder if I can switch that to 'no', since I simple don't use IPV6. Will some apps mysteriously refuse to work when I do this? (You never know...) HOSTNAME=... -> this looks like a redundancy with information provided in /etc/hosts. So what is it for? Can it be left out? GATEWAY=... -> another redundancy, since it's also to be found in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-<interface>. Leave it out if it's in the individual interface scripts? More questions to come, but here's a first bunch :o) Cheers, Niki PS: I've started on Linux with Slackware (7.1), hence a habit of configuring my system with Vi rather than some configuration helpers. Intel DG965RYCK with CentOS 5

Hi, I am trying to install CentOS on an Intel DG965RYCK. I had came to DRUID and wanted to customize the PATA Harddisks for RAID. But it would not detect the harddisks. In the CMOS, both the 500 GB IDE Harddisk are being detected. Any idea? Thanks

Greets Anyone on the list using newer HP G4 or G5 server hardware like DL36X or DL38X with Centos? Or other HP hardware? Are you running Intel, AMD, or both? Are you using SAS or SATA or a mix? Are you using Centos 3, CentOS 4, or starting migration to CentOS 5 Are things rock solid stable without any issues? I know older Compaq and HP boxen have been rock solid for us for years yet we wanted to check and test the waters b4 we consider unloading some bread. Deployment Guide in french?

Hi, I have CentOS 5 installed, and I'd like to read the RHEL 5 Deployment Guide in french. The online version seems to be available in english only. There's an RPM package on my system: # rpm -qa | grep -i depl Deployment_Guide-fr-FR-5.0.0-19.el5.centos Deployment_Guide-en-US-5.0.0-19.el5.centos Now what does the package consist of? 'rpm -ql' on the package shows a series of .xml files in /usr/share/doc/Deployment_Guide-fr-FR-*. Question: how do I access these? My GNOME desktop is in french OK. Only when I access the help browser via 'Système -> Documentation -> Enterprise Linux Deployment Guide', I get access to the english version, but the french version is nowhere to be found. dcc error on centos 5

Hi, I set up DCC on CentOS 5 with Dual Sendmail - Amavisd-new and and Spam assassin. I installed DCC from AT rpms. pls see below for installed DCC rpm. [root@mailgw ~]# rpm -qa |grep DCC DCC-1.3.50-16.0.el5 Then, I configured in Deamon mode. I did below steps. [root@mailgw ~]# yum install DCC then, [root@mailgw ~]# cdcc "delete 127.0.0.1" [root@mailgw ~]# cdcc "delete 127.0.0.1 Greylist" then, edited /etc/dcc/dcc_conf [root@mailgw ~]# vi /etc/dcc/dcc_conf I changed DCCIFD_ENABLE=off to DCCIFD_ENABLE=on then, [root@mailgw ~]# cp /usr/libexec/dcc/rcDCC /etc/rc.d/init.d/ [root@mailgw ~]# chkconfig rcDCC on And finally,I edited SpamAssassin's configuration file, and tell it where to find the path to DCC: vi /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf Add this to the end of the file: dcc_home /usr/libexec/dcc then, Edit the file v310.pre: vi /etc/mail/spamassassin/v310.pre I changed #loadplugin Mail::SpamAssassin::Plugin::DCC to ( I removed the # mark) loadplugin Mail::SpamAssassin::Plugin::DCC then, [root@mailgw ~]# /etc/init.d/spamassassin restart Stopping spamd: [ OK ] Starting spamd: [ OK ] then, [root@mailgw ~]# /etc/init.d/rcDCC start Then, I checked logs, It gives below erros. Then, I disabled selinux as below [root@mailgw ~]# setenforce 0 Then, I started DCC service again, [root@mailgw ~]# /etc/init.d/rcDCC start Then It gave no erros. pls see below. Update, now can't unlock

I started a yum update this afternoon and there were lots of updates (182) so I presume it's the 4.5 update. Now I can't unlock the session with my password! Any ideas? (no caps lock is not on!) -- Peter Crighton

recompiling kernel results in error: .../linux-2.6.18.i686/arch//Makefile: No such file or directory

I have installed CentOS 5 with all updates. Also I have 2 ne2000 isa cards. In recompiling the kernel, I have been trying to follow the instructions on this URL: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel The complete error message I get is: Makefile:403: /home/cs/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.18/linux-2.6.18.i686/arch//Makefile: No such file or directory I have the following kernel and rpm packages installed: kernel-2.6.18-8.1.4.el5 kernel-headers-2.6.18-8.1.4.el5 kernel-devel-2.6.18-8.1.4.el5 rpm-devel-4.4.2-37.el5 rpm-4.4.2-37.el5 rpm-python-4.4.2-37.el5 redhat-rpm-config-8.0.45-17.el5.centos rpm-build-4.4.2-37.el5 rpm-libs-4.4.2-37.el5 uname -r gives 2.6.18-8.1.4.el5 The .rpmmacros file has the following: %_topdir /home/cs/redhat %packager cs <dwoody1(a)charter.net> The script I am using from a user login is: rpm -i /home/packages/kernel-2.6.18-8.1.4.el5.src.rpm rpmbuild -bp --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec cd /home/cs/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.18/linux-2.6.18.`uname -m` cp /home/cs/redhat/SOURCES/kernel-2.6.18-`uname -m`.config .config # enter 'y' for isapnp, isa and 'm' for ne2000 support make xconfig cp .config /home/cs/redhat/SOURCES/kernel-2.6.18-`uname -m`.config cd /home/cs/redhat/SPECS # change the release to: # %define release 8.1.4.1.ne2000%{?dist} vi kernel-2.6.spec cd /home/cs/redhat/SPECS rpmbuild -ba --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec After the patches are applied during the last rpmbuild command I get the error message at the top of this email. Searching the web has not provided any useful information. According to the documentation in make xconfig, isa and isapnp support have to be compiled into the kernel. I know that I have either not set a parameter, doing commands in the wrong order or I have missed a step, but I have not been able to determine what. I have even tried to change the order of the commands without luck. Any help will be greatly appreciated, David
