Crazy idea for a portable CentOS installation

I've got CentOS up and running on my hp pavilion laptop. There wasn't enough space on the internal hard drive to shrink the NTFS partition and install CentOS there, and I didn't want to go through the exercise of copying everything to a new larger internal drive until I knew 5 was going to work, so it's installed on an external USB drive -- except for /boot which had to be on the internal drive in order for grub to properly dual-boot XP and CentOS. Now the thought occurs to me: Is there some way I can easily carry this external drive to another machine, plug it in, and boot up the same CentOS installation? There are two constraints: (1) There is no /boot on this drive, so I have to re-create that, and (2) I don't want to have the /etc configuration that works with my laptop destroyed by whatever kudzu finds on any other machine I might plug in to, so I need a separate /etc. Which leads to my question: Can I somehow: * copy /boot and /etc onto separate partitions on either this USB drive or a thumb drive [let's say a thumb drive for clarity in the rest of this paragraph], and * re-run grub to install a boot loader on the thumb drive, such that * the end result is that when I boot the laptop from the internal disk with the CentOS USB plugged in, I get exactly what I have now, but * when I boot from the thumb I get the root from the CentOS USB with the thumb /boot and /etc mounted over it? Kudzu could thus do whatever it needs to for the current hardware in the thumb /etc, without changing the original /etc, but everything else would be exactly as it is when I boot the laptop. Is there any chance at all this will work? I assume to change the boot device and reassign the /boot and /etc mount points I'll have to boot from the rescue CD. I've never done a grub reinstall by hand before (always used lilo in the past) so I'd appreciate pointers to the specifics of doing that for CentOS 5.

Folding@Home in CentOS/Solaris Zone

Hi there, I tried the Folding@Home client under CentOS(2.4.21) which is run in a Solaris Container/Zone on a x86 machine. Apparently this won't work ad hoc, since the downloaded Core file won't start: ... Hello, I installed CentOS 4.4 (for the first time) around a month ago (minimal install) and I just typed "yum update". I was surprised to see a big list of updates and feared an upgrade to centos 4.5 or 5.0 so I stopped the process with CTRL+C. What could I do to check everything is ok and stay with CentOS release 4.4 ? 196 packages to install or update ??

Hi, today I did a yum upgrade and see that there was 193 packages to update and 3 packages to install... I always upgraded my server (with yum) on a weekly basis so I don't undestand how it is possible to have a so big update. Is there something wrong with my yum setup ? A mix between different versions of CentOS ? I'm running CentOS 4 i386 Thank you

AcroRead failing miserably in CentOS 5.0

I could swear that this was working just last week, but now when I run the Adobe Acrobat reader, it hangs. If I run it "directly" (/usr/bin/acroread) with -DEBUG as the first argument, I get an infinite loop of: expr: syntax error I tried removing and reinstalling it, but no change. VMWare Client COS 5 Disk Type

When creating a VMWare client that is Cent OS 5, the default SCSI disk is not recognized by the installer. Any suggestions for getting a disk on a COS5 client? Possible alternatives: 1) IDE disk, seems to work fine, 2) ??. Follow up to choice 1, is there a performance hit? While I have you, what is the best choice for "Guest Operating System".? Choices include RHEL, RHEL 4, and Other 2.6 Kernel. -- Sincerely, John Thomas

Alpha port for CentOS-5

Hi guys, there seem to be a few people interested in the Alpha port for CentOS-5. And here is what the situation is : 1) There is a functional Alpha available at my home. 2) I am not interested in doing any of the porting work but will be happy to help with some parts of the testing. So, now the situation is - how many people are really interested ? And if there is enough interest - how many people really want to put in the efforts ( and have the know how ) to work on this ? If there is enough interest, I am happy to make my Alpha available over remote access to the people who are going to work on the port. the machine has enough ram and enough resources to handle most of the work, I've been building CentOS-4 kernels and gcc / glibc on there - its a dual cpu EV5 series machine.
