CentOS 4.5, kernel-2.6.9-55, NTPD trouble

Following the update this morning, NTP is failing with the same symptoms that I saw several years ago (pre-CentOS, I believe) when Anaconda mistakenly blessed my ASUS A7N8X, Athlon (CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+ stepping 00) based system with an SMP kernel. The symptom is that NTPD never establishes sync with a server, showing over the top jitter values. Rebooting into the previous kernel restores the operation this machine has enjoyed for the last couple years, quickly settling on an external source. (The following was copied after an extended period of time but the fact is that I have to really rush to boot, startx, open a root terminal and enter the commands before ntp stabilizes like this.) [OT] External RAID storage / NAS

Hello List, I need storage for my home network - lots of storage. It's going to hold pictures, home movies, music, other bits of data, etc. I'm looking to start at about 500 GB, but I'd need to eventually grow that to 1 TB, or more. I also want something that is quiet, has hot swappable drives (not necessary, but a plus), is fairly easy to manage, and can be directly attached to the network. Obviously, it has to work with Linux distros, and support NFS. I've done some research, and so far the ReadyNAS NV+ looks to be the best. Is there anything else similar to the ReaddyNAS NV+? I currently have an Arena Aiby v2 for my small business/home office, but it's LOUD, cannot be directly attached to the network, big, and uses PATA drives. It's also leased, so instead of buying it out at the end and moving it to personal use, I just want to let it go when the lease is up. All recommendations welcome. Why new "SCSI" devices in 4.5 kernel?

I've been running CentOS 4.4 on my Thinkpad 600E machine. Now the new 2.6.9-55 kernel wants to support the SCSI devices I don't have. After the 4.4 --> 4.5 update, on the reboot kudzu informed me that it had detected my PIIX4 controller. Well, OK. That same chipset has been in this machine for 10 years, but if the OS wants to re-detected it that's fine with me. Here, finally, is my question: why is my limited system RAM being wasted with device drivers I don't need? It occurs to me that maybe CentOS 4.5 wants to handle my CD-ROM as a SCSI device. Is that done with plain old CD readers? This Sanyo CRD-S372B is far to old to actually write CDs and would probably burst into flames if I put a DVD disk into it. So... any thoughts as to the sudden appearance of this SCSI support? Thanks.

I looked on the mirrors and could not find rpmdevtools. yum install rpmdevtools does not install it either. Where can I find rmpdevtools? Any way to run openssh daemon on a kickstart client (stage2)?

Hi, Any one have succeeded in firing up a sshd daemon when a machine is being kickstarted? I know VNC can be setup to minitor the kickstart process, but it is too limited and so I can not see the console and other screens with ALT+Fn keys. If sshd daemon can be setup at this stage, then we can remotely ssh into the being kickstarted client(s). and directly see what things happen during %pre, %post and other stages. cannot label a lightscribe disk

Hi I am having problems labelling a lightscribe disc in a Lacie USB2.0 interface CD/DVDW. I am running CENTOS 5.0 I can read and write cds and DVDs including DLs without any problems. Both xcdroast and k3b detect the unit as TSSTcorp-CD/DVDW SH-S162L Lacie's 4L software unfortunately doesn't detect any unit with either the gui interface or the cli interface.
