centos5 - yum groupinstall and yum grouplist

If I do a minimal centos 5 install Then if I do a yum -y update then if I do a yum groupinstall "Development Tools" "Development Libraries" (is that syntax right, it works)? both are installed yet if I yum grouplist this is all that shows up as installed even though both are installed Installed Groups: Development Libraries System Tools Dialup Networking Support Network Servers Mail Server If I check to see if I can install them individually after that they both say there are installed and up to date. :-) Just wondering if it was something that needs to be addressed as a minor inconvenience or pretty output type bug thanks -- Abba Communications Spokane, WA www.abbacomm.net

CentOS 4.4 on Thinkpad T30

I installed CentOS 4.4 on an old T30 I had lying around using a slightly modified kickstart file that I use to install on desktop systems. I had to manually fix the resolution for X, but everything appears to work fine out of the box otherwise. Except for two issues: o After a period of inactivity (> 30 minutes), the laptop will go to sleep and I can not wake it up other than a hard reset/reboot. o If I pull the network cable, almost every command hangs (this is with a local account, although the system is configured for NIS); if I reconnect the network, the hanging commands complete (I've tried running strace, but that hangs as well). I think the second issue also happens on my desktop systems, so it's not related to the laptop itself, but it is more likely that a laptop be used off the network. Any suggestions? Alfred

Usb disk no longer shows in GUI

I have a USB disk and when I turned it on in the past, it's icon would appear on my GUI Desktop. Now it is no longer visible. stupid cruzer tricks ???

Greets, Ummmmm never had one b4... picked up a new 4 Gig SanDisk Cruzer Micro USB 2.0 Flash Drive to play with. Dunno if I will keep it or not. I am mostly interested in using it with CentOS of course. Ummmmm it comes with like 120 meg of non linux apps and stuff on it. Can I dust that garbage and just reformat this unit to boot with CentOS or?? Been around for a long time, know google exists etc and how to search etc, yet I wanted to hit the list and see if I could prompt for some CentOS list wisdom about dealing with this from a CentOS Linux perspective. :-) Im thinking putting the CentOS DVD on it and using it for installs among other things... maybe get one for 4.x and 5.x etc :-) Please share your stupid cruzer tricks!!! uninstall tomcat5 gets openoffice

Yum site cache

Hi all, since I'm installing several copies of CentOS I was thinking of using some system to save bandwidth. I started looking at mrepo, but I noticed that, if I let him sync with updates and rpmforge repos, I'll end with a _lot_ of unneeded files. Also I have to modify the various yum repos configuration files for it to work. What I would like to achieve is just download the same file only once: does anyone know if there is something like a "yum proxy-cache" or if it is possible to instruct squid to caches at least the rpm's and to serve them regardless of the server (by default yum uses a server list, so it would be nice to have the system working without having to fiddle too much with config files) tia Lorenzo

Why no upgrade?

I have 2 installs of 4.4 that I'm experimenting with. 'yum update' on one of them upgraded to 4.5, but the other system does NOT upgrade. Any ideas? I ran a 'yum clean all' but it did not appear to help. Thanks, Scott

Is it possible/advisable to run CentOS 4.4 and 5.0 on the same box

We are in the process of transiting from 4.4 to 5.0 and I may need to be able to switch back and forth for a while. Is it possible (or advisable) to run both 4.4 and 5.0 on the same machine, or does that involve a lot of reinstalling/repartitioning and a fair amount of pain (I have only one disk on the test machine for this purpose). I'd rather just go to 5.0, but that's not up to me at the moment. Did you remove any of these partitions (e.g. the Media Direct one)? Could you share your experience? I'd like to preserve the base functionalities without preventing me to use CentOS 5 as the master OS. Thanks in advance, Matteo
