Printing

antivirus sniffer/scanner for networks

Is anyone aware of a package that can detect viri on the network & possibly alert when there are? Here is the scenario: Our network is utilized by guest users all the time, sometimes into the thousands. We see guests from all over with a variety of OSs & hardware, all of which, we have no control or say in that matter. I am looking for something that I can run in promiscuous mode and/or on a span port that will sniff for viri and then alert/log when it sees a virus. We can then track down the culprits' ip/mac and shut off the switch port he/she is connected to and then visit with the guest to help them clean their machine. Given the nature of our network and our guests' needs, an inline solution is not an option. Although, I recall that squid supports WCCP, I'm not sure that it would do what I am requesting. I also looked at snort+libclamav, but the info was inconclusive. We are a CentOs shop and I have a spare dual xeon box that I can use for the task. Thanks, Eric

I said fine and got tired of messing with it and bought a Gigabyte motherboard. Now I am having the same issue. Its complaining about a bad MAC address. I actually have 2 identical boxes. One has this issue the other seems to be OK. The network settings are not changing every time I boot up. So - How can I tell centos to STOP changing my ifcfg-eth* config files? Thanks so much, Jerry

CentOS 5 fresh install fails at io scheduler setup

As long as I'm still awake, I tried to install CentOS 5 (earlier) from a DVD I downloaded via bittorrent about a week or so ago. It boots fine, but once it starts to load the kernel (in graphics mode), it gets to the point where it announces the four i/o schedulers and then stops dead. No disk activity, no DVD activity, nada. Is there a known problem here and if so what, or is this a new one? Evolution problem - not sending/receiving any more

Not at all clear on what happened. I haven't downloaded my mail from gmail into Evolution for a couple of days, and today I changed my gmail password. Even though I told Evolution to forget my passwords and had to reenter them, I am unable to receive any email from the server. I get a quick "retrieving Pop summary" and then the window vanishes and nothing gets downloaded. When I try to send email, I get a window that says "Unable to authenticate to SMTP server" and a few other things. I have triple-checked the password (couldn't get here if I didn't know it), so what else could be the problem? Centos 5 where is rndc.conf and named.conf?

In /var/named/chroot/etc there is no rndc.conf or named.conf. Where are they? Webmin built a named.conf, but it is missing many of the 'default' entries. And it did not set up the symbolic link to /etc I am trying to follow instructions at: http://www.wains.be/index.php/2007/02/04/centos-chroot-dns-with-bind/

Saving digikam photos for update to Centos 5

I will be installing Centos 5 soon and would like to know how to save my digikam photos from centos 4.4 for inclusion in the centos 5 digikam version. I have a external usb 2.0 hard drive to save the messages on. I know how to savethe messages on the hard drive. I am interested in knowing should I save the entire pictures directory or only the photos from my albums. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me. -- Richard Miles Federal Way WA.
