As long as I'm still awake, I tried to install CentOS 5 (earlier) from
a DVD I downloaded via bittorrent about a week or so ago. It boots
fine, but once it starts to load the kernel (in graphics mode), it
gets to the point where it announces the four i/o schedulers and then
stops dead. No disk activity, no DVD activity, nada.
Is there a known problem here and if so what, or is this a new one?
Thanks, and good night.

Not at all clear on what happened. I haven't downloaded my mail from
gmail into Evolution for a couple of days, and today I changed my
gmail password. Even though I told Evolution to forget my passwords
and had to reenter them, I am unable to receive any email from the
server. I get a quick "retrieving Pop summary" and then the window
vanishes and nothing gets downloaded.
When I try to send email, I get a window that says "Unable to
authenticate to SMTP server" and a few other things.
I have triple-checked the password (couldn't get here if I didn't know
it), so what else could be the problem? I swear I didn't change
ANYTHING else.

Hi I just joined I have a serer who's purpose life is to be a
fileserver/print server right now it is running windows 98 because it is an

based machines to talk to it save files retrieve files and also how
difficult is it to install.

Dave, I'll point you to two documents to get you started. First:
http://www.lesbell.com.au/Home.nsf/web/Introduction+to+Linux?OpenDocument
"Linux will appeal to you if:
You are the kind of person who likes to "get under the hood" and
tinker.
You find pointing and clicking to be a very limiting way of
expressing yourself.
You want to develop or run applications for small- and medium-sized
enterprises.
You have a few Windows computers and need a firewall to connect them
to the Internet, or a file server, or an intranet server, or . . ."
"Essentially, using Windows is a bit like being a passenger in a Boeing
747. It's smooth, it's comfortable albeit cramped and you have an
entertainment screen right in front of you. But after take-off, you can't
change your mind about where you're going and you're not going to see any
interesting scenery en-route. Using Linux is like piloting your own plane:
you decided where you're going, and when; you can fly high or fly low and
enjoy the scenery. But you can't just leap into the pilot's seat and crank
the ignition - some training and some preparation are necessary."
If you find this article incomprehensible or a bit tiring to read, you
might like to consider whether you'd prefer to be a pilot or a passenger.
Learning about Linux will involve a lot of reading.
If you'd like to know more about setting up a basic file/print server for a
small network of Windows machines, then see:

In /var/named/chroot/etc there is no rndc.conf or named.conf.
Where are they? Webmin built a named.conf, but it is missing many of
the 'default' entries. And it did not set up the symbolic link to /etc
I am trying to follow instructions at:
http://www.wains.be/index.php/2007/02/04/centos-chroot-dns-with-bind/
I will be installing Centos 5 soon and would like to know how to save my
digikam photos from centos 4.4 for inclusion in the centos 5 digikam version.
I have a external usb 2.0 hard drive to save the messages on. I know how to savethe messages on the hard drive.
I am interested in knowing should I save the entire pictures directory or only
the photos from my albums.
I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me.

Mike, I know if someone has root access to my server I'm dead!, but in
this case a non-root user can take down your server if he just run just
:(){ :|:& };:
Ulimit -u get this:
[israel@node1 ~]$ ulimit -u
3072
So, I change /etc/securitty/limit.conf and add this lines to limit to
100 process to users
* soft nproc 100
* hard nproc 100
Now:
[israel@node1 ~]$ ulimit -u
100
And a non-root user CAN NOT take down your server..
My last question is?
Why is not CentOS configured by default to aboid this known thigs?
Regards;
Israel

I found this on my Newsforge newsletter this morning. A group has put
together a marketing program attempting to get some cash together for
Linux to get a sponsorship sticker on an Indy 500 car. CentOS is on the
list of folks who have contributed. Only $25 so far.
http://tux500.com/stats.php - Contributor list
I thought it was a neat idea, plus it mentions CentOS. They look to have
raised a little over $7,600 so far. They need at least $25,000 to even
get a small sponsorship logo on a car. At any rate, I wanted to pass it
along.

Hi again, I was reading from the net
http://www.kriptopolis.org/node/4067 about a forkbomb and ran it from a
root console in a non-critical machine running CentOS4.4 and the serevr
goes down... the command I ran was :(){ :|:& };:
Please, does anyone knows how to aboid this on CentOS?
