centso 5 modifying my ifcfg-eth[x] files

I have a machine with 2 network cards. Installing centos 5 on it. I set up both cards with static IP addresses. activate on boot etc... One is e1000 Intel the other is onboard forcedeth (nvidia). After I reboot the forcedeth ifcfg-eth1 file is changed to DHCP. I use netconfig -d eth1 to set it back up and reboot again and the changes back to DHCP. Only thing to add here is the network card does work, however I get a dmesg output that eth1 has an invalid MAC address. Is that invalid MAC address changing my setup? I dont think it should. granted I'm still looking at finding a way to reset he MAC address or something but I dont think the ifcfg-eth files should be modified. This seems like a bug- that is the reason for the post. Great work with centos 5! Jerry

using command line to setup auto login

I am trying to find a way to set auto login for a machine under X using the command line. I presume I want to use gconftool-2 to do that. Under the old X centos 4 I edited /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf This file no longer exists under X 7 for centos 5. I cant find a way to "show all" under gconftool-2 so that I can see what the key/value pair should be. When I do "gconftool-2 -a " it says it needs a directory. If you dont know what the directory is how can you give one?? I'm confused. I can goto System -> Administration -> Login Screen, then select Security and enable login. However, I need to do this action from the command line. THanks for any pointers that I am missing. Jerry

SELinux and daemons - clever way to change default locations?

I'm sure you've seen this before: You need to slightly tweak the default installation of a major daemon - let's say you're running a big MySQL database and you need to put it on a different filesystem, mounted (for example) as /db So you move /var/lib/mysql to /db/mysql (and preserve all the file attributes, including SELinux), change /etc/my.cnf accordingly, start mysqld - and it doesn't work. It turns out you need to tweak SELinux - test the daemon, run audit2allow on the audit log, tweak the policy, test again, repeat until it works. I did this many times, but it strikes me as an inefficient process. Sure, you only do it once per install, but still. I wish there was a simple way to tell SELinux "I moved the MySQL datadir (or the Squid cache dir, or the Cyrus-IMAPd spool) to this new location, but everything else stays the same, please stop bugging me." What happened to seamonkey? I thought firefox was retired in 4 and replaced by seamonkey. Imagine my surprise when 5 came with firefox. What's a guy to do? TIA Russel

can't find python24 rpms for centos4 64bit anymore!

Hi I'm using python24 under centos4 for a webware application. I downloaded it from atrpms repository some time ago. I'm installing a new VPS with centos4 64bit, and can't find any python24 package! python.org pyvault doesn't support 64 bit architectures, and atrpms don't make python24 packages anymore. I don't have 64 bit architecture at home so I can't recompile python24 on my (small) vps. Please help! Regards

UML under Centos5

Has anyone been able to get UserModeLinux to work under CentOS5? I've got an image which works fine under CentOS4.4 but when I try it under CentOS5 then it hangs just after mounting root kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly. Now, I'd read this was a known issue because of a UML bug which newer host kernels exercised, so I downloaded the 2.6.21-rc7 kernel and tried using that as a guest, but still no luck. Host kernel: 2.6.18-8.1.1.el5 Guest kernel: Linux version 2.6.21-rc7 This is on an SMP box, if that makes a difference, but it shouldn't because CentOS 4.4 ran just fine as the host. I'm running out of ideas :-( -- rgds Stephen

Odd pointer trouble

I have Centos 5 loaded and running virt-manager. I setup a new VM and the install starts but my X cursor is not aligned with my "arrow" pointer. They also move at different rate. I am running cygwin X server on my PC. Any guess ? Alan

How do I disable the update agent in the upper right corner on centos 5? I am looking for a command line way to do this. I know I can right click on it and select quit. THanks, Jerry

par2cmdline make errors centos 5

I am using centos 5 x86_64 and trying to install par2cmdline everything goes fine but fails on the make, any one have any suggestions on where to start I would appreciate, I am using a minimal install and going from there. My goal was to install backupPc to start backing up my machines when I ran into theis problem. Thanks in advanced.
