Upgrade 4.4 to 5.0 (Error in transaction)

Hi! I'm having a problem upgrading an existing 4.4 installation to 5.0. - The machine is a x86_64 architecture - I'm upgrading from a DVD - I've used the same DVD to sucessfully upgrade another machine (therefor I'm pretty sure that it is OK) - The error occurs on both DVD-drives on the machine (therefor I think its not a problem with a particular DVD-drive) I'm clicking through the upgrade dialogs. Then the machine prepares to install the packages. At the end of this a dialog-box appears: Error running transaction There was an error running your transaction for the following reason(s): Apart from that text there is only a Reboot-button (no explanation) On the other virtual terminals there is nothing unusual (last line in Ctrl+Alt+F3 is "Preparing to install packages") The /root/upgrade.log is empty. My guess is that there might be some packages that offend the installer (there are some non-standard packages on the machine, don't shout at me: I know that's bad (amongst them a 32-bit firefox)). Is there a way to find out which packages are the bad ones? Any tips would be most welcome. Thanks PS: What I'm trying right now is removing the worst offenders and retry the upgrade procedure in text mode.

Hardware-independent server installation

I don't have a system similar to my active server, and I'd like to install CentOS to a new drive on a spare system and then load that disk in my server once it's configured with the services I need. How hardware-independent is a server installation? What should I look out for when doing this? I've been using Linux on servers for several years and am a software/hardware integrator by day. It seems like this should be trivial but I'd like to know if I'm missing any obvious gotchas. I'm guessing the biggest issue is associating eth names with actual devices (modules.conf?), since the systems are unlikely to use the same Ethernet hardware.

Machine SLOWWWS and then stops after a few minutes running centos 5.

Hi all, I had asked the other day about my new machine amd 6000+ and strangely SLOWWING down then eventually stopping. I have tried a new 500W power supply, I took out the extra video card, and just used the one on the motherboard (both are nvidia one with DVI one RGB). I took out all the RAM and tried differnent RAM. I ran memtest86 (ran fine until the machine turn off). Harddrives should be fine since they are not active during memtest86. THe temperature on the CPU has never been higher that 118 degrees. This is after it turns off and I go into the hardware monitor. I reset the BIOS settings or loaded defaults. I did download from ASUS the current BIOS for the M2N-MX motherboard. I cannot change the mother board or processor without buying a new one. It is SO STRANGE that the system slows DOWN before shutting off. I run a continuous compile and use the time command to time it. The compile starts at about 16 seconds and SLOWS DOWN to 30 seconds right before turning off. cpuspeed is not running on the box. If anything its supposed to speed up not down. Is there anything else to try or any suggestions. I also boot centos 5 with "noapic" on the kernel line. Jerry

Software Updater vs. Add/Remove vs. Yum(ex)

Why so many updates already for CentOS 5

sendmail smrsh symlinks not working against php scripts

Hello. I am trying to forward the e-mails received to one address towards a php script. I am trying all I can but nothing does. I have edited my /etc/aliases file and added this line. ecard-bounce: "|/usr/bin/php /etc/smrsh/ecardbounce.php" Then, of course I do a 'newaliases'. In my /etc/smrsh I have placed the symbolic link defined above, which has been created this way: ln -s /home/my/scripts/ecardbounce.php /etc/smrsh/ecardbounce.php When using this configuration, I get the following error back by email: ----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- "|/usr/bin/php /etc/smrsh/ecardbounce.php" (reason: 255) (expanded from: <ecard-bounce(a)myserver.com>) ----- Transcript of session follows ----- Status: 404 Content-type: text/html X-Powered-By: PHP/4.3.9 No input file specified. 554 5.3.0 unknown mailer error 255 However, if I put a hardlink instead of the symlink, all works fine! The permissions of the symlink and the file linekd are all 777. Has anyone already had this problem before, or would anyone have an idea of the problem? Thanks, Daniel

Cpuspeed

How necessary is it to run this gem on a desktop with a constant power supply? It doesn't seem to be all that useful, except if there's some significant power consumption advantage to lowering the cpu speed. Doesn't the CPU run at full speed unless throttled down by temperature, or is that what this thing does (for desktops)? Thanks. new machine just turns off after some time.

Hi all... I have a new machine for centos 5. amd 6000+, 2 gig and 750GIG drives. Price is quite reasonable... Anyway... centos 5 installs fine, I was running fine then the machine just turned off. I tried to run a video for the last 8 hours on it waiting to happen again and it worked just fine. I then did a continues compile with a batch file and after a few minutes it just turned off... I saw the length of time to do the compiles was increasing. At the end about 10 seconds extra than the time when I first started.... I immediately jumped into the hardware monitor for CPU temp and it is registering 45C. around 114 F. Seems OK at this point.. I have heard before RAM or power supply. Do these symptoms still point to that? Does the power supply seem more likely than RAM? The RAM is DD2 Corsair. I am doubtful that the kernel just died or something for froze as the machine TURNS OFF. THanks for any tips. Jerry

Wow, virt-managerin Centos5 is very fussy!

If I tell it to use an NFS source (eg nfs://server/mnt/cdrom) then itin Centos5 tries to do a CIFS mount instead (I can see it running mount.cifs and in the xterm I ran virt-manager from it then asks for a password). Wow. If I tell it to use an lvm2 volume (/dev/VolGroup00/xentest - already created at 1Gb) then it goes through, calculates the amount of space required etc etc and then barfs with no error message beyond "transaction error". The only way I can get it to work is by letting it create a file (eg /xen/test1) and installing via http (why doesn't it allow file:// type install sources? Hmmph!). (Note: I have selinux disabled, so that shouldn't be a problem). Fortunately that succeeded; I told it to install the guest without lvm, and so I could then losetup the file to get to the raw filesystem after the install completed and do a dump. In future I can make a file system from this template and build my own config file, avoiding virt-manager totally. virt-manager... guh! -- rgds Stephen
