Java installs but won't play -- update

Dear friends: I created a symbolic link from /usr/bin/java to ~/.mozilla/plugins/java but still Java does not work. Please see data below. Thank you so much. I followed instructions and the install came off fine (Done!), but when I try to play it, it won't work. I imagine that I probably need to create a symbolic link to the plugin. Here is the info: [sher@localhost ~]$ whereis java java: /usr/bin/java /etc/java /usr/lib/java /usr/share/java [sher@localhost ~]$ Could you please help me by suggesting the command and link for this? virt-install can't work with phy:/dev/bla/bla. bug or feature?

MySQL 5.0.22 on CentOS 4.4

Hi...I was pleased to see MySQL 5.0.22 and PHP5 in CentOS 5.0 and as much as I need these updates I think I should be safe and not upgrade until CentOS 5.1 is released. But for now I am running CentOS 4.4 with stock MySQL and PHP rpm packages. I need to upgrade MySQL to 5.0 and I noticed there is a mysql-server- 5.0.22-1.centos.1.i386.rpm package in the centosplus directory. There is also a mysql-server-5.0.27-1.el4.centos.i386.rpm package but I think I should stick to .22 so that the eventual upgrade to CentOS 5.1 will be easier. I have two questions for any of the MySQL administrators running CentOS 4.4... 1. What has been your experience like with the mysql-server-5.0.22- 1.centos.1.i386.rpm centosplus package on high load sites? 2. Is it better to just use the official RPM from MySQL instead? http://mysql.org/get/Downloads/MySQL-5.0/MySQL-server-community-5.0.37- 0.rhel4.i386.rpm/from/pick My concern with the official MySQL rpm is that it's version 5.0.37 and will be different from the one in CentOS 5.1 So for now I think I would like to use 5.0.22 with stock PHP 4.3.9 then later upgrade PHP to version 5.1 also from centosplus. Any performance or stability reason not to? Please share your experience and opinions. TIA!

ALT TAB on centos 5

HI all, using centos 5 something is when doing ALT+TAB the window goes black instead of an outline border. Where is this setting to control this behaviour? Thanks, Jerry

Upgrade 4.4 to 5.0 (Error in transaction)

Hi! I'm having a problem upgrading an existing 4.4 installation to 5.0. - The machine is a x86_64 architecture - I'm upgrading from a DVD - I've used the same DVD to sucessfully upgrade another machine (therefor I'm pretty sure that it is OK) - The error occurs on both DVD-drives on the machine (therefor I think its not a problem with a particular DVD-drive) I'm clicking through the upgrade dialogs. Then the machine prepares to install the packages. At the end of this a dialog-box appears: Error running transaction There was an error running your transaction for the following reason(s): Apart from that text there is only a Reboot-button (no explanation) On the other virtual terminals there is nothing unusual (last line in Ctrl+Alt+F3 is "Preparing to install packages") The /root/upgrade.log is empty. My guess is that there might be some packages that offend the installer (there are some non-standard packages on the machine, don't shout at me: I know that's bad (amongst them a 32-bit firefox)). Is there a way to find out which packages are the bad ones? Any tips would be most welcome. Thanks PS: What I'm trying right now is removing the worst offenders and retry the upgrade procedure in text mode.

Hardware-independent server installation

I don't have a system similar to my active server, and I'd like to install CentOS to a new drive on a spare system and then load that disk in my server once it's configured with the services I need. How hardware-independent is a server installation? What should I look out for when doing this? I've been using Linux on servers for several years and am a software/hardware integrator by day. It seems like this should be trivial but I'd like to know if I'm missing any obvious gotchas. I'm guessing the biggest issue is associating eth names with actual devices (modules.conf?), since the systems are unlikely to use the same Ethernet hardware.

Machine SLOWWWS and then stops after a few minutes running centos 5.

Hi all, I had asked the other day about my new machine amd 6000+ and strangely SLOWWING down then eventually stopping. I have tried a new 500W power supply, I took out the extra video card, and just used the one on the motherboard (both are nvidia one with DVI one RGB). I took out all the RAM and tried differnent RAM. I ran memtest86 (ran fine until the machine turn off). Harddrives should be fine since they are not active during memtest86. THe temperature on the CPU has never been higher that 118 degrees. This is after it turns off and I go into the hardware monitor. I reset the BIOS settings or loaded defaults. I did download from ASUS the current BIOS for the M2N-MX motherboard. I cannot change the mother board or processor without buying a new one. It is SO STRANGE that the system slows DOWN before shutting off. I run a continuous compile and use the time command to time it. The compile starts at about 16 seconds and SLOWS DOWN to 30 seconds right before turning off. cpuspeed is not running on the box. If anything its supposed to speed up not down. Is there anything else to try or any suggestions. I also boot centos 5 with "noapic" on the kernel line. Jerry

Software Updater vs. Add/Remove vs. Yum(ex)

Dear friends: Just installed Centos 5. Very impressed but as a newbie I am a bit confused about the the role of the Software Updater vs. Add/Remove and Yum(ex).
