Kernel question(s): I/O handling

I have been chasing down the way the inode and page caches are structured and handled, but there is a mystery I have not been able to track down yet. How does the I/O queue that dirty inodes and pages are put into when it's time to flush them out to disk get picked up? Also, where are the sources for the I/O schedulers? I haven't been able to locate them yet either. I know this should not be too hard to locate, but it seems as though there's some magic involved when the inode/page gets put in the i/o queue and then <something happens here> and the i/o is scheduled and, eventually, performed. Consolidating LVM volumes..

Hi, Something I haven't done before is reduce the number of volumes on my server.. Here is my current disk setup.. [root@server1 /]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-RootVol00 15G 1.5G 13G 11% / /dev/md0 190M 42M 139M 24% /boot /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-DataVol00 39G 16G 22G 42% /data none 157M 0 157M 0% /dev/shm /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-HomeVol00 77G 58G 15G 80% /home /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-VarVol00 16G 382M 15G 3% /var Rather than try and reduce the size of the VarVol00 volume to make more unallocated space which I have heard is a little dangerous.. I would like to get rid of the VarVol00 and have the /var directory on the RootVol00 volume.. Then I can allocate some of the free space to HomeVol00 which is filling up.. So how do I do this? Do I simply copy /var to /var2 and then edit the /etc/fstab file to remove the line that mounts VarVol00?? Then at what point and how do I rename /var2 to /var to get it all working as normal again? Should this all be done in "single" mode? As you can see I am really not sure about this procedure so any help or step by step instructions for be great.. Thanks..

Command not running in crontab

Hi, Can anoyone tell me why this command is not executed (or it is without success) from crontab, but works perfectly from the command line ? (yes, i've restarted crontab service) # clean up postmaster 00 30 * * * root /usr/bin/find /var/qmail/maildirs/postmaster(a)telbit.pt/Maildir/new -type f -print0 | xargs -0 -n 50 rm The mind boggles... Updating the DVD ISO howto?

I seem to remember this being addressed before, but I can't find the howto anywhere. I've got a friend heading to another country with VERY limited bandwidth. He'd like me to update the 4.4 DVD to include all of the updated RPMS from updated. Where can I find the scripts to update the meta data on the RPMS and create a new bootable DVD? Thanks! Ben

CentOS 5 Beta Feels Snappier

Hi, Is it me or is CentOS 5 faster than FC6? I just switched and it seems that CentOS 5 loads faster and overall feels snappier. Could Red Hat have optimzed EL more than Fedora?. Just curious. I really like what I see with CentOS 5. The devs have done a great job making a profesisonal looking distro. An of course kudos to Red Hat for all the engineering and for making the SRPMS available. Prblems log rotating a file

Hi, I needed to logrotate a fil named qmail-queue.log from qmail-scanner. So i've edit /etc/syslog.conf and changed it to: *.info;qmail-queue.none;auth.none;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none /var/log/messages (...) # qmail-queue logs qmail-queue /var/spool/qscan/qmail-queue.log Also, i've edit /etc/logrotate.d/syslog and changed to /var/log/messages /var/log/secure /var/log/maillog /var/log/spooler /var/log/boot.log /var/log/cron /var/log/auth /var/spool/qscan/qmail-queue.log { sharedscripts postrotate /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/syslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true endscript } ---------------------------------------------------- I've restarted the syslog service In the end all i got was the file not being rotated as well as /var/log/messages: Mar 21 08:24:10 mail kernel: Kernel logging (proc) stopped. Mar 21 08:24:10 mail kernel: Kernel log daemon terminating. Mar 21 08:24:11 mail syslog: klogd shutdown succeeded Mar 21 08:24:11 mail exiting on signal 15 What am i doing wrong ? 4.4 i386 Server CD actually 64-bit?

Just downloaded the CentOS 4.4 i386 Server CD. The md5sum on the file matches: My file: 8ccb89265b16ca551bd04a15b3cf59a1 (CentOS-4.4.ServerCD-i386.iso) md5sum.servercd: 8ccb89265b16ca551bd04a15b3cf59a1 (CentOS-4.4.ServerCD-i386.iso) However, when I boot up with the CD on a Compaq Armada E500 laptop (Pentium III), the following message pops up: "Your CPU does not support long mode. Use a 32bit distribution" If I use my regular CD 1 of the full i386 CentOS 4 install, I don't get this and am able to get into the installer. So is something wrong with the CentOS-4.4.ServerCD-i386.iso file on the mirrors? Thanks, Ray

Question about stubborn RPM

Hi, I've made mysqlf a RPM and installed it. After that i did what i shouldn' do: remove the files it installed. Now, i wnat to install it agai and i can't. Already rebuilt the rpm database ( rpm -vv --rebuilddb), used --force, --replacepkgs, --replacefiles, --justdb, --erase, --initdb, but no good. Been at rpm.org, but found nothing that i already know.
