centos 4.4 dns problem -

Upon installing Centos 4.4 a second time it worked "out of the box" as expected. Sorry that I caused a stir over a non-problem. I still have no idea what I did that may have caused dns to fail, I think I made all the same choices and entries the second time around? However doing this in the wee hours I had no interruptions or distractions ... Should anyone be interested the dns servers are: cat /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 12.189.32.61 nameserver 208.67.222.222 nameserver 208.67.220.220 but there may be a problem here: service named status rndc: connect failed: connection refused I'm not certain about that but next is to run yum update and do some other configuration to satisfy my own preferences. So I list out some directories, and I redirect the output to a file called "out". I do it with: find . \( -type d ! -name . -prune \)' > out I then go into "out" using my favorite editor and remove any directories I don't want to search. When I do a find `cat out` -name 'something*' I get an error on any directories with whitespace in them. When I try to place quotes around that name, it doesn't work, nor does putting a backslash in front of the space help. Any shell experts out there have any ideas? === Al

How to properly bridge the network to CentOS under Parallels on a Macbook Pro?

Hi all, I have recently acquired a Macbook Pro (sweet machine!) from my employer, and one of the tasks the machine has to do is to run a distributed software development platform (called Splice) under Linux. For this task, I have chosen the trusty CentOS 4.4, and I have it set up in Parallels. So far, so good. Now then, the network does work within CentOS, but I want to assign it a fixed IP address, such that the DDS layer of the distributed platform can transparently communicate to (and from) the virtual machine. More specifically, the entire network, in which the Splice DDS runs, is a 192.168.1.x local network. There are already two 'real' (i.e. not virtual) machines, with IPs 192.168.1.4 and 192.168.1.42, which both work swell with one another. Now, the Macbook itself has the IP address 192.168.1.121, but the bridged network connection is a DHCP range, running from 10.211.55.1 - 10.211.55.254, and I want to be able to 'see' the VM from anywhere within the 192.168.1.x network. Presently, from the VM I can already see the machines in the 192.168.1.x network, but the other way round not. When the VM is e.g. assigned the address 10.211.55.4, I cannot ping that address from the other machines in the 192.168.1.x network. Note, from that network I can ping correctly to 192.168.1.121. The main question then becomes: how can I 'see' the VM from the 192.168.1.x network? I *think* I have to change something in the parallels network or parallels NAT configuation, but I am not certain what it should be set to, and I do not want to risk messing up all sorts of settings. Also, in CentOS I do know how to set a fixed IP address, but I am not certain if perhaps I have to add a 'direct route' or so. Does anyone know if this is (also) necessary? CentOS 5 Beta - Yum Updates?

I am new to CentOS. I mostly use Fedora Core. I installed the CentOS 5 Beta on a test machine from the DVD. I configured it with both KDE and Gnome. I am using the default YUM configurtion which loaded with the DVD. Unlike FC7T2, CentOS 5 Beta does not seem to pick up Yum updates. Is this by design or do I need to add repos to my /etc/yum.repos.d? Thanks for any suggestions Bob Styma

centos 4.4 dns problem -

I've just installed Centos 4.4 on a computer, replacing FC6, and the first thing I find is that DNS does not work no matter what I have in /etc/resolv.conf. It should at least work with my ISP's assigned server but doesn't. Numerical URL's work via the browser and ping. Is there something else I need to attend to? I hope this is the right list for such questions. Thanks. Bob Goodwin

How to bind a username to an ip address with squid

Hi ALL, I am running squid with ncsa support. Each user has a username and passowrd to access Internet. Now the probles is that user now can access Internet with his username and password from all the workstations. I do not need it. So, I think if I bind username to ip address, user can access Internet from that particular pc having that ip address. How to do it? -- Thank you Indunil Jayasooriya

How to add time to squid log

Hi, I have the need of adding time to squid log. The commad tail -f /var/log/squid/access.log does not provide the time when a user acesses the internet. I want to enable this feature. How to enable ? - Thank you Indunil Jayasooriya

Dedicated Servers

Hi, A little bit off topic here, but I was wondering if anybody knows about a good dedicate server provider, that offers CentOS (but ofcourse) as a os choice, and that is very reliable. I am using SuperbServer, but as of this moment 2007/03/19 1406 America/NewYork time, my server is down do to a power outage at one of their facilities in VA. This is the second outage in less that 5 months. Unacceptable. But yes, any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

In fact, a hurricane flooded the area and I never even noticed. They were supposedly on backup power for days. Do you know what datacenter you're in? robert
