CentOS 4 Samba - Excel 2002/2003 bug

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 There is a nasty bug on samba, up to 3.0.10, which causes Excel to incorrectly think a file was changes by someone else. This is a know issue, fixed on samba 3.0.11 (stock). A patch was also applied to samba on RHEL 3, but was NOT on RHEL 4. This patch (samba-3.0.9-excel.patch) will apply cleanly on samba-3.0.10-1.4E.9, and build without a glinch. This issue is NOT solves by http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324491 (has it on a machine with Office SP3 installed). Maybe we can get a centosplus version of samba with this patch applied ? xawtv lib issue.

I'm trying to make xawtv work on my CentOS 4.4 i386 boxen. It fails with this error: This is xawtv-3.94, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.9-42.0.8.EL) load_codec_info_from_plugin: dlopen failed for /usr/lib/libquicktime/lqt_ffmpeg.so: /usr/lib/libquicktime/lqt_ffmpeg.so: undefined symbol: avcodec_init Segmentation fault I yum installed all the rpms it wanted but still no go. I know someone else was having this same issue and asked in the centos forums. Does anyone know how to resolve this? Thanks, -- -Doc

Centos 4.4 Samba passwd chat

I' just setting up a samba server using centos and get you don't have permission to change you password on the windows xp client. Just wondered what others are using for the passwd chat line in smb.conf. Mine is: *New*password* %nn *Retype*new*password* %nn *passwd:*all*authentication*tokens*updated*successfully* Also tried setting passwd chat debug = Yes but that seems to have no effect in the log output. CentOS 3 vs. CentOS 4 Memory Utilization

I'm helping some folks who have a CentOS 3 i386 server with 512MB of RAM. The output of 'free' looks like: $ free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 511428 497956 13472 0 29868 178280 -/+ buffers/cache: 289808 221620 Swap: 2040244 120644 1919600 The box does not even have X installed... it's basically a web application and email server. They would like to upgrade to CentOS 4, but are concerned that it could be considerably more "memory hungry" and lead to memory starvation (they don't want to add more RAM to the box at this time, although that could be an option down the road). I ran some tests under VMWare with fresh installations of CentOS 3 and CentOS 4 (both using a "minimal install", the same as the server in question) and CentOS 4 seemed to only use 10-25MB more memory. However, it's hard to know how this will translate into real-world performance over time and with the application installed. Does anyone have any experience that would suggest how much more memory a non-X server like this might require? If the application(s) on the server stay the same, do you think we would run into issues where memory would be depleted to a level that would cause concern? Many thanks, KC

asrock 775 dual-vsta mb and linux with sata raid

Hello, I have the subject mentioned mb and I am trying to install centos 4.4 with sata raid enabled, but linux is not seeing the drives? I tried to load via sata raid driver, no luck there. I guess I could try legacy mode in the bios, but I was hoping there is another way around to load linux with the raid? Thanks....

I only have one question ... if it does successfully boot using the "acpi=off" parameter how do I actually edit all of the kernel parameters to reflect the change? I read a few days back on the list where the tzdata rpm was to take care of the new DST rules. I run CentOS 3 servers, and did a 'yum update tzdata' , but received a 2006a update of the rpm. problem with CentOS Live CD booting

Hi all, Trying to boot a server with the CentOS 4.4 LiveCD (have a crashed HD that I am trying to recover data from). The CD boots fine, gets past asking for the keyboard type, then asks for a password. It will stay at the login prompt for a few seconds, then whether I type anything or not, it gives a fast error message, something about mixer not attached (it goes by too fast to read the entire thing), the CD spins a bit then I get a blank screen and nothing else. Anyone have any ideas? I have even tried this on with the drives removed. The machine is am HP LP1 Netserver, dual PIII 1ghz processors 3.25gb ram and when installed, SCSI drives. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks Dale
