Problems with new kernels

Hello, I have been having problems using kernels since 2.6.9-34.0.2. After updating to a new kernel, my system runs, I'm guessing, 6 - 8 hours fine, then becomes unresponsive. For example, I installed the latest kernel the other evening, reboot for the changes and by morning, the system appears to be locked up. Typing 'yum update' takes about 10 minutes to execute. Not sure whats going on here but I'm stuck using 2.6.9-34.0.2. This is a centos 4.4 system on an IBM NetVista, 2.53 Ghz, 1GB RAM. I have noticed when there is a kernel update, it downloads the huge memeory and smp files. TIA Eddie

Problem with java-1.5.0 from c4-testing

performance lost in using a software raid array with only 1 disk

Is there any performance lost in using a software raid array with only 1 disk? I was wanting to use the mdadm monitoring tools to monitor the machines single disk drive for failures and such. Is there any performance hit for such a setup? Some machines have RAID some machines dont (for me) and I was thinking about a common setup. Also then if I want in the future I can actually just add the second disk and now I have RAID. Jerry

Accessing vncserver

Hi all, 3 weeks before lift-off we are looking for people who were planning to attend FOSDEM and are interested to join the CentOS team's presence. At FOSDEM we will have a booth and a developer's room. We are looking for people that: + can populate the booth for a few hours, socialize with people and answer questions + want to actively participate in the devroom discussions and presentations (socialize with team members and visitors and answer advanced questions) + attend outside social activities with the rest of us (on friday pre-FOSDEM, beer-event and on saturday another event) + would like to buy a special shirt and run around the campus with it :) No prior knowledge required except the ability/eagerness to reach out to people. Accessing an external USB disk

I was able to remove the NTFS partition and repartition the HD as a type Linux (83). Next I created the ext3 file system. If I reboot with the USB drive attached, the boot process hangs, however if I turn off the drive, boot and then turn it on, all is fine. # cat /etc/fstab shows the drive, but I am not sure how to use it for a backup nor do I know how to access it. 3.8 failure message

Hi all, I have a relatively idle Centos 3.8 server that I'd neglected to upgrade in quite some time (I think a 1ghz P3) on an old Intel 815 board. The OS has been regularly updated and probably was current as of a week or two ago. It was mostly a playground for a couple of vanity domains so when it went down I didn't really give it top priority. Today I had someone wander over and look at the screen and see if they could bounce the power and have it wake back up. I don't think I've ever seen this particular situation before: The last msg on the screen is from the boot loader "total huge TLB memory allocated, 0" and thats it. It won't boot. It stops dead. I'm assuming it's just some sort of mainboard/memory/processor type of failure since it does manage to find the boot loader. Just thought I'd see if anyone had any suggestions before I drive a couple of hours with my bag of parts. I periodically image the drive and copy it to another box on the same lan segment so at least it should be easy to rebuild once the machine is stable again. :) Any suggestions/insights would be appreciated.
