Compiling CentOS kernel

When I download a kernel from kernel.org I can compile it making config and make bzimage, but in some case I tried to make the kernel for a specific CPU in CentOS kernel source and I can not compile the CentOS kernel. Why CentOS kernel do not compile as kernel of kernel.org? I think that should worlk ease. -- Devel it, Precio http://www.pas-world.com

I'm a noob with CentOS so I appreciate your valuable time and patience with my silly questions. Hopefully, I won't be a noob much longer :-) I'm using CentOS 4.4 and Plesk 8.1 on my Apache web server. I installed netPBM via yum: # yum install netpbm-devel.i386 # yum install netpbm-progs I saw no errors, and when I run "yum list installed" I see the packages. The problem is, my customers' programs can't find netPBM and neither can I. I've been looking for a file named "netpbm" or "netPBM" and I can't find it in /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin. I updated my "locate" database, then I ran "# locate netpbm" but still found nothing. I tried "which netpbm", "whereis netpbm", and everything I could think of but I still can't find it. I've tried restarting Apache to no avail. Can anyone tell me what's going on? What's frikken the path to netPBM? Is there something else I need to do, after running "yum install (pkg)"? Changing the file type

I have a USB external drive that has not been used with my Linux system. The HD is from a Windows system, so it has a NTFS file system. My manuals speak of the fdisk -t command to change the file type, however that does not appear to be available with Centos. Could someone refer me to the steps I should use to change the file type, change to partition if necessary, create a Linux file system and then set it up so that when I plug in the USB drive it will automatically mount (if possible). RAID1 building via hardware

Hi all, I´m trying to create a RAID1 on a machine. I´ve already configurated BIOS (mother board, Intel, S500VSA SATA) so as to build RAID1 via hardware. However on CentOS Installer, when I reach "disk setup" screen, it shows up 2 devices (/dev/sda and /dev/sdb). Is this right (both devices being showed)? How should I proceed on this moment? If I create the partitions on sda, sdb will be identical?? Openoffice 2.1 install error?

Java headaches

I lost my harddrive, and have had to reinstall. This time, I am being a bit smarter on imaging, but still got to get things installed... Installing Freemind. It needs Java JRE. So after lots of pain, and reading past messages, I got jre-1_5_0_09-linux-i586.rpm from sun and installed it. Then I tried to follow Jim Perrin's recommendation to install from jpackage.org the java-1.5.0-sum-compat.rpm. Thing is it is complaining about no JDK (not JRE!) yum install java-1.5.0-sun-compat (have jpackage.org repo in yum.repo.d) Resolving Dependencies --> Populating transaction set with selected packages. Please wait. ---> Package java-1.5.0-sun-compat.noarch 0:1.5.0.09-1jpp set to be updated --> Running transaction check --> Processing Dependency: jdk = 2000:1.5.0_09-fcs for package: java-1.5.0-sun-compat --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Missing Dependency: jdk = 2000:1.5.0_09-fcs is needed by package java-1.5.0-sun-compat Huh? so i just try Alfred von Campe's Alternatitive commands: /usr/sbin/alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/java/jre1.5.0_09/bin/java 10 \ --slave /usr/bin/rmiregistry rmiregistry /usr/java/jre1.5.0_09/bin/rmiregistry \ --slave /usr/lib/jvm/jre jre /usr/java/jre1.5.0_09 /usr/sbin/alternatives --set java /usr/java/jre1.5.0_09/bin/java These seem to work but: rpm -ivh jgoodies-forms-1.0.5-2jpp.noarch.rpm error: Failed dependencies: java >= 0:1.4 is needed by jgoodies-forms-1.0.5-2jpp.noarch and java -version yields: java version "1.5.0_09" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_09-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_09-b03, mixed mode, sharing) OK. Not exactly. 1) I will be modifying the kernel and possibly writing one or more device drivers. I'd like to start with a build that works - that's been one of the best ways I've found to ensure that any added or modified code can be reasonably inferred to cause whatever problems I might find. Why is it a problem for one to want to be able to build a working kernel? 2) The build log was clean - where would I find the error log? Wait - that's kind of secondary. I then moved to the instructions in the README file, which are, yes, drastically different - they don't involve rpm, using the exact same source for the exact same kernel. The only fundamental difference is that make doesn't necessarily generate an rpm package (actually, this one does), and I don't need to use rpm for anything. Later on that may be a problem, but not right now. 3) The modification to xfs is a sample based on what I have been assigned to do - I'm not trying to generate the latest and greatest xfs that's available out there. Maybe I should, in the ideal world, but working in corporate America is pretty far from the ideal world. 4) This is all true, but not particularly relevant. I need a base kernel with NO modifications that I can then start to use to create any customizations, like a new device driver or twiddling with some other code that we need to customize because, perhaps, for compatibility reason, we can't just upgrade to a new version of <some_module>. As for the lvm "incompatibility," this is the main one I don't understand. If I am building from the same source as the distribution I am running on this box, why would there be an incompatibility here? There was no need specified for why a custom kernel was needed. If such a need was spelled out, it's possible that much better help could be provided, or it could even be added to the centosplus kernel. 2. No build log or error of any kind was shown to help troubleshoot. And rather than figuring out what went wrong, the user moved to a drastically different set of instructions, which use a drastically different kernel. Doing so without proper understanding could (and likely would) lead to problems down the road. (The install with --nodeps on the howtoforge listing is a nice touch) 3. The user in question seems to have not done homework regarding centos and XFS, and will be modifying the 2.6.9 xfs code instead of using the much nicer xfs code backported by ex-SGI folks specifically for centos. 4. There are many considerations in building a custom kernel for centos, such as the audit libs, utmp compatability, current system compatability (as demonstrated by the lvm troubles) and so on.

In Aug. 2005, Congress passed an energy bill that included extending Daylight Saving Time by about a month. Beginning in 2007, DST will start the second Sunday of March and end on the first Sunday of November.
