Help With Installation to USB Stick

Recently, I was able to create a workable Centos 4.4 "Live USB" on my 1G Lexar Firefly pendrive using the steps in http://linux.web.psi.ch/livecd/usbdisk.html. At the moment, it is doing its job, so I probably won't focus too much more on it. One thing that is annoying, although doesn't cause a problem is that on powerdown and reboot, the cd rom drive ejects - of course, there is no CD in it! My ultimate goal is to get a standard, updatable 4.4 install onto my 4G Firefly, I am at a loss as to why I get the following errors: *************************************** Booting 'CentOS-4 i386 (2.6.9-42.EL)' root (hd0,0) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-42.EL ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet [Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1400, size=0x16dd65] initrd /initrd-2.6.9-42.EL.img [Linux-initrd @ 0x1fefe000, 0x612ef bytes] Uncompressing Linux... Red Hat nash version 4.2.1.8 starting mkrootdev: label / not found mount: error 2 mounting ext3 mount: error 2 mounting none switchroot: mount failed: 22 umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! *************************************** This is what I did: - installed CentOS 4.4 from CDs using "expert mode" - grub bootloader - /dev/sda1 mounted on /boot 100M - /dev/sda2 mounted on / 3.9G - no swap - server install (w/gdm) It was suggested that I may be having an issue with USB drivers not getting installed, so I ran mkinitrd including them. I also uncompressed initrd.gz and tried to add them manually - I had no luck with either method. Since I am by no means a Linux expert (my background is in data and voice networking), any and all suggestions and URLs will be appreciated! Mark

ACL Support and Samba

I've been playing with filesystem ACLs and wanted to integrate that with Samba to create a more transparent end user experiance. I have set up and tested a JFS partition with ACL support. I can use getfacl and setfacl with no problems to set permissions as needed. It works great. I compiled Samba with ACL support using the --with-acl configure option. Unfortunately I can't seem to get Samba/Windows to list the full set of permissions that show up with a getfacl. Trying to add two users with two different permissions to a file via Windows, returns an "access denied" message. The listed permissions only show the normal owner/group/other permissions and not the more detailed getfacl permissions that have been set up. If anyone has any hints or suggestions it would be apreciated. Shawn

rpmforge/dag's perl-Apache-ASP

Has anyone actually had any success in installing the perl-Apache-ASP package from rpmforge? CentOS 4 seems to have just the right combination of almost using mod_perl 2 (1.99 before major API changes) to make this extremely hard to get right while staying with somewhat standard packages. I suspect it's in the repo but not actually tested, as I've tried quite a few combinations of using this RPM with the CentOS4 mod_perl and my own mod_perl 2 built using cpan2rpm, as well as my own perl-Apache-ASP.rpm built from CPAN. I've also experienced problems with compiling ePerl into and RPM, mainly due to it's age, but I can probably patch this to get it to build. Suggestions for other solutions with similar functionality are welcome, I'm really just looking for a in-lined perl/HTML solution that provides somewhat respectable performance while altering the actual perl as little as possible (unlike embperl and mason, which each implement a mini-language to varying degrees). -- - Kevan Benson - A-1 Networks

looking for libpangocairo

I installed Komposer from .tgz file, since I couldn't find it on any of my repos. It wants to use libpangocairo, but I can't find anywhere willing to give it to me. I did a yum provides libpangocairo, but nobody would own up to having it. Is there somewhere I can download a compatible .rpm? Is there somewhere I can rpm a compatible libpangocairo? large disk volumes with 64bit kernel

I installed 4.4 on a machine that's got two RAID volumes, one of which is a bit over 2.1 terabytes. The installer had no problem. However, fsck does. Commenting out the volume in /etc/fstab, the machine will boot. The machine will mount the volume and use it. Everything seems fine except fsck, which seems, well, fscked. When trying to run fsck, it says: # fsck /dev/sdb1 fsck 1.35 (28-Feb-2004) e2fsck 1.35 (28-Feb-2004) The filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 549346683 blocks The physical size of the device is 12475771 blocks Either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt! Abort<y>? yes Is there some way to build single volumes larger than 2TB? It should not be a problem with a 64 bit OS (Windows managed to do it on this hardware before I switched it over to Linux). Is there some tuning I need? Any pointers to documents or other useful references would be appreciated. Thanks for any/all help. It looks like postfix is trying to deliver your mail to a directory that is actually a file. I'd troubleshoot that. If you get nowhere with this I would suggest posting your errors (full logs of the event) and configuration (postconf -n output) to the postfix mailing list. alex

Ext2/3 fs and defragmentationn

Hi all, Fewer days ago a CentOS box server suffered a manual and unexpected reset (too large to explain: there are silly people in everywhere). The result was the system did not mount de root (/) partition and the boot process was stopped. I repair it easily: boot from LiveCD (Knoppix in my case), umount root partition and pass the e2fsck utility. Because of that I've used several fs tools and my surprise was the e2defrag utility. Until the present day I think the ext2/3 fs has not defrag problem. But I've used defrag tools in root partition because it was really fragmented. ¿What do you know about this kind of "trouble"? 4.4/64-bit Supermicro/ Nvidia Sata RAID Driver

Hi, I am installing Centos ServerCD 4.4 64-bit on a new Supermicro board, the RAID BIOS looks fine, RAID 5, all 4 Seagate ES 250 GB drives show up as a single array in the RAID BIOS tool, and the OS install phase completes without a hitch. One thing I noticed was that the OS was loading the sata_nv driver and picking up the 4 Sata drives instead of the large RAID5 volume, it should just appear as one big 1TB drive. Usually it should see the RAID and not worry about loading the sata driver per se from what I remember... When the OS install completes and I reboot, I simply get a blinking cursor. On consulting Amax/ Supermicro, they write: ---snip---- Since this Supermicro model was just recently released, it is possible that the drivers on your installation disk are out of date. Right now the OS simply reads out sata_nv as it progresses, but I see no interrupt point where it allows one to 're-specify' or otherwise encourage the OS to utilize this updated .img file supermicro is suggesting. Any suggestions on the step-by-step sequence for this? bonus/ p.s. -anyone had any experience with the Nvidia onboard RAID/ Supermicros? Did you like it, (I'm an LSI-Logic fan myself), just looking for opinions... -karlski
