Hi, I have this problem my email server's DNS name is ns1.mydomain.com, and it is registered in the reverse DNS also with that name, when i installed my server at the hostname i entered centos-server.mydomain.com when i tried to send an email from the root console with # mail root the email is returned saying that root(a)centos-server.mydomain.com, could not be verified i used the command # hostname ns1.mydomain.com and also edited the file. /etc/hosts, but i have the same result, the hostname did not change, i even restart my server with no luck. what am I missing? regards, Guillermo. RAID 1 not boot when disconnect a disk

Hi I have a clean CentOS 4.4 disk and I have setup a RAID 1 with two IDE disk. The system RAID 1 boot fine but when I disconnect a disk (the first disk) the system not boot. The screen goes black and not boot anything (grub not boot). Can anybody help me ? What I doing wrong ?? Excuse my english .... Get error msg if try to use kernel makefile / build kernel

Using the new method for building a standalone kernel module (although seems to happen with the traditional way as well) I get "mach_mpspec.h: No such file or directory" Same result if I try to do a kernel 'make'. Subsequently I get MAX_MP_BUSSES and MAX_IRQ_SOURCES undeclared. This should surely work 'out of the box' with Centos ? Any ideas about what's missing ? Thanks, MikeW

Centos-4.3: Filelocking problems under high [network related] load with kernel 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp

Hi, first of all, please CC me on any reply, as I am only subscribed to the digest. OK. Here is the problem. Said kernel (from 4.4) seems to have problems with file-locking when the system is under high, likely network related, load. The symptoms are things using file locking (rpm, the user-space automounter amd) fail to obtain locks, usually stating timeout problems. The sytem in question is a HP/DL380G4 with dual-single-core EM64T CPUs and 8GB of Memory. The network interfaces are "tg3". It happens with both CentOs and RHEL4. The high load can be triggered by copying three 3 GB files in parallel from an NFS server (Solaris10, NFS, TCP, 1GBit) to another NFS server (RHEL4, NFS, TCP, 100 MBit). The measured network performance is OK. During this operation the systems goes to Loads around/above 10. Overall responsiveness feels good, but software doing file-locking or stuff like opening a new ssh connection take extremely long. So, if anyone has an idea or hint, it will be highly appreciated. Turn an ext2 filesystem into a component of a mirrored RAID?

We have a CentOS 3 server with about 300GB of data on an ext2 filesystem that we need to mirror onto a new drive, which we're then going to pull out and put into a second server. A straight disk-to-disk copy (with rsync, tar, or "cp -a" doesn't much matter) manages about 75MB per minute, which would take almost three days, and the system gets very sluggish while such a copy is going on, so we can't afford to just let it run. Is it possible, without loss of data, to convert the existing ext2 filesystem into a mirrored software RAID, then add the new drive as a second device and let rebuilding the RAID take care of making the copy? Even if this took more time, we've had good overall system performance with software RAIDs rebuilding in the background before, so it could run as long as necessary. We'd then need to be able to remove the second device from the RAID and either convert it back into a plain ext2 or put it into a similar software RAID in the destination machine. Is this possible? Is there another plan that would make more sense? Thanks in advance for suggestions.

startx reboots my computer

Well, sometimes startx reboots my computer. Other times is does nothing except slow it to a halt for a while. Sometimes is locks up. I am using init level 3. At the command line, everything looks fine, and I can do whatever commands I want. When I type startx, then things go down the tubes. What doesn't happen: X never starts No error messages get posted to dmesg no log is generated in /var/log/xorg.0.log What DOES happen: on a good run, I get the error message: /usr.../startx: fork: resource temporarily unavailable on a bad run the computer either locks up or reboots, or I get a parade of notices that the comp is "out of memory, shutting down process xxxxxx". running top -u tmiller -b>/tmp/top.log in another console generates a huge file. Hardware: AMD 3500+ x86_64 proc 1GB ram 8GB swap 3 x 160GB SATA drives nvidia nForce4 chipset on Gigabyte MB Gigabyte nvidia GeForce 6200 video card firewall is separate ipcop box to ADSL Software: Centos 4.4, fully updated started as a bare install (uncheck everything except KDE at software choice screen), then added only things I really want/need vmware server (free version) wine I had just spent a couple of days getting the install "tweaked" in preparation to moving to it as my "workhorse" workstation environment. I had tweaked my dual monitor setup (a 21" landscape screen next to a 17" portrait screen took a lot of false starts to get xorg.conf right), gotten vmware working, and was still wondering where the fonts went for my wine install. It was working pretty well, and I was looking forward to using it, and when I rebooted, I have this mess. I have spent hours looking on the Internet looking for similar symptoms, to no avail. "#rpm --validate --all>grep X" sqwauked about some missing *.so files, but showed nothing corrupted. I am wide open to solutions or instructions on where to look for diagnosis information as to what is wrong. Waiting for direction in Indiana Ted Miller

Is there a method so on a remote vnc connection the screen is not being shown to those where the monitor is located. If I am remoting in I dont even want the screen that is blank due to screen saver, to even show anything. remote does not need the screen at all in my case. Is there a way to do that? Jerry
